Don\'t Sony own Ericsson?
Ericsson have announced another upcoming handheld console, should Nintendo worry?
Red Jade is an upcoming handheld console from Ericsson and it boasts 64-bit capabilities.
Ericsson made the announcement to bring back this handheld (once delayed due to financial problems) in Asia last week. They also stated that they hope for a 2003 launch. It will be able to process graphics somewhere between Playstation 1 and the N64. Below are the specs:
* 64-bit CPU
* 3D polygon graphics
* Multi-channel PCM Sounds
* TFT LCD display, 65536 colors
* Mobile phone rechargeable battery
* Blue Tooth technology enable wireless communication between 2 or more machines
* Download game titles from secured game servers
* Retail price will be less than US$100 (around £63)

I doubt it... it may be though that Sony is financing it? But no, Sony does not own Ericsson.
-
Wow!!a 64-bit handheld console!?
-
I doubt this thing will do very well. Nintendo owns the handheld market, their userbase is too big.
In order for another to do well, Nintendo would have to screw up big time.
Just IMO, of course.

Im sure Nintendo isnt that much taller over anyone else in the handheld compartment. Im sure others such as this just might make it. Especially considering the amount it cost, if this is true Nintendo can easily be taken over. I dont know many people with Gameboys. Little kids, thats about it.

I\'m curious about this. I wonder if Nintendo will finally have a major competitor.

The answer is NO. At least for my youth. No one would dare defect from the GBA. Even though good games have died down a bit. I just want my new mario and zelda remakes!

If they can put a backlit screen in it, find a way for batteries to last longer than 6 hours, and welcome developers who wish to make 2D games.. then I say it\'s a good thing for the industry. Too bad it\'s for the ASIAN market.. and not the global market. Sorta like the WonderSwan.

/me vomits.
Ugliest. Handheld. Ever.
Wait a second is that madden?!?!
/me reconsiders his disgust.
In all seriousness Nintendo would have to REALLY mess up for someone to compete in the market. Thats like Apple coming out of the blue and releasing a super powerful console right now. Why even bother when the PS2 has the market on lock? (40 million shipped) Last time I saw the numbers, the GBA had sold almost 35 millions units. They have the handheld market monopolized and if they were to release that prototype GBA2 that we read about a couple weeks ago they would be even more popular.

i should do well, but then i think it might faulter when it comes to its launch day in Brazil.
woops sorry my bad wrong Ericsson ;)
*hey i could of sliped in a poor taste seaman joke ;)

Yeah, sure . Nintendo has a monopoly / strong hold on the handheld market and have had some pretty tough competion before (neo-geo pocket rocked, damnit!) and they still crushed the other companies. Why? Simple. They have a back long of games they can re-release, add maybe one new thing and so does every other company. Now combine that with the massive success of the GB & GBA and there is no way another company could catch up at this point.

I think Sony doesn\'t own Ericsson, it has only a deal in the mobile field. Who knows...

I talked to a friend of mine who works at Ericsson.
He says that site is quoting a 2 year old press release so I doubt its actually true. Not to mention Ericsson is still losing money so poring money into a risky project would not be that smart.
Sony does not own Ericsson. Ericsson and Sony entered a partnership where they formed the company SonyEricsson (flashy ay?)
Sony CE\'s top boss has been talking about a possible handhelled console though, he said they were just testing a few possible solutions (ie. batteries, storage format (MD?))
If anyone is going to release a handhelled it most likely would be Sony, trying to expand to new areas.

What would SONY name their hendheld if it\'s true?
Let\'s see:
PlayBoy!
PlayMate!
GameStation?
KidStation
Kid\'s Play?
GameBoy Station?
Playboy and Playmate sounds the catchiest but don\'t think it\'s goes too well in a kids market...parents will be enraged!!
-
Hmm, it will be part of the PlayStation brotherhood but I reckon it will have its own cool name. (Like Sonys new network, CoCoon or the VAIO computers, or the handhelled CLIÉ computer. Something cool like that.) :)
-
sony does have some cool names for their stuff dont they!! i like VAIO the best

I do believe Sony is in some type of partnership or own part of Ericson, because all the cell phones from Ericson, now ay Sony-Ericson on the top, so that would lead me to believe they are some way connected!
Edit: Sorry had not read all posts b4 poster, Faston said it all.
-
If Sony entered the handhald market, trust me, Nintendo would have every reason to be worried. ;)
-
If they had an internal lithium rechargable battery, and ac adapter that came with it, they could deffinetly give Nintendo a hit in sales.
-
all i can say is YUK YUK YUK YUK YUK! is that thing some sort of deformed dildo?! g-zus, i can say this however.
every single system that tried to dominate the handheld market was SLAUGHTERED, its been 13 years now and nintendo\'s got a stranglehold on the market. it started with game gear- dead, sega nomad (which i thought would beat anything what with internet and all)-dead, neo geo- dead, wonderswan- well only in asia... so ericsson better cross their fingers cuz nintendo\'s gonna write their name on the wall in blood. IMO anyway
hey did anyone see the panasonic gamecube? true i hate gamecube but MAN ALIVE that thinng looks cool, brished steel, glass front, remote control, cool blue LCD, functions, functions, functions...
