it doesnt really matter anymore what dvd reader you get..  just like cdroms, they\'re isnt a whole lot of difference between models and they\'re all pretty cheap

its the pack-in software thats gonna make the difference

I got a Toshiba and it takes a long time to start and stop spinning so I would get a different brand.  Also had problems running Emperor:BFD from this drive.

Next time I\'ll probably try Samsung.

Lite-on makes one of the best for an excellent price.

Also you can get front loading DVD rom drive from Pioneer

I have the Pioneer 117 16X DVD. WICKED rom, my mate has a ACER dvd rom, takes forever to open/close the tray and half the time the cd is still spinning while it opens.

I say go pioneer. :)

Lite-On and Pioneer have my vote too.  If you value a quiet environment do NOT get a slot-loading drive.  I have a 10X DVD, 40X CD slot-loading Pio and that mofo is just way too loud when the disc spins up.  I pretty much use my tray-loading CD-RW for everything now.

should sped 175 bucks on a DVD+R+RW, if I had a desk top I would get one right now.  Unfortunetly with my laptop I would have to pay 300+ for an external, or buy an external kit for another 60-80 bucks, not worth it to me.
