Title: Shinobi Impressions
Post by: Capcom on November 13, 2002, 08:19:56 PM
I posted this under latest game purchase, but I realize alot of people may not go into it to read an impression. So this a straight copy-paste.

THANK YOU GOD!!!!!
THANK YOU GOD!!!!!
THANK YOU GOD!!!!!
THANK YOU GOD!!!!!

This is a glorious day. It has finally happened! Games that I am excited about, and have not let me down. I swear this is the best day I have had in a long long time. I bought 2 games today. 1 I was not too sure about, and the other a definite. Here goes.

Shinobi for the ps2. All I have to say is thank you sega. I love this game. Any game where I can run on the walls is a game for me. I thought I would give this one a quick try, because even the demo it plays does not look like all that. Needless to say the next thing I knew it was well over 2 hours later. The last time that happened was Devil May Cry. It reminds me alot of that game. Maybe it is just the swinging of the sword, and double jump. Either way this is not the best looking game out there, but DAMN if it is not a blast to play. The first boss I encountered was a pushover. The second one though it started ramping up in difficulty. I am ashamed to say this, but I had to resort to a cheap way of killing him.

I should also mentioned I have died numerous times in this game. Not so much from sucking. Well maybe a bit of that, but the wall thing got me jumping on walls to the point of me getting orgasmic, and forgetting where I was then jumping into a pit. Did I mention I love this game? If not I thought I should poihnt that out. If anyone has specific questions I will be more than happy to answer them. Needless to say if you liked Devil May Cry, I think it is a safe bet you will like this. Sorry LIC this may not be for you.

Wonders whos LIC is talking to?  I am quite possibly one of the few people that have over 60 hours into Devil May Cry.Action games like this, and stealth is by far my favorites. Don\'t get me wrong. I am pretty sure this game is going to cost me atleast 1 controller. Play 10 minutes in a level to die at the very end gets my blood boiling.

EDIT: Though I am wondering why I must fight stupid helicopters.

Hey, in Revenge of Shinobi, our hero fought The Terminator and a fire breathing T-Rex...

Isuppose I should clarify. I am fighting a stupid helicopter for a 2nd time. It also causes the only fuss I have about the camera. I lose my guy completly during the battle. I beat it so it is no big deal.

Edit: I played and beat Shinobi for the Genesis. It was the one with the spider-man, and Batman clone. I can\'t remember the name, but can remember the finger twitching of a couple of levels.

My only complaint. He should be able to strafe left and right!
Oh and the cinemas rock.

I am not sure that was Spider-Man. In fact I almost bet it was not. I doubt Marvel would have let Sega make your friendly neighborhood spider-man a bad guy. Especially back then!

So far my only real complaint about this game is the graphics. I think Sega could have done quite a bit more with it. The difficulty can be a let down from time to time. The no checkpoint is what makes that rough. You might play 10 minutes in a level to only have quite a few more baddies than usual at the end kill you. At that point it is another 10 minute excursion back in hopes of beating them. I have everytime so far, but I doubt my luck holds up.

EDIT: I wish more people would atleast give this game a try. Running on walls is awesome to say the least. Or it is to me atleast.:D

You know it was Spider Man because right after the Sega logo on bootup, it said Marvel, Spider Man, etc...

Actually, FYI there the original copies of the game did indeed star Spider-Man and Batman, but if I recall later there was a huge thing with Marvel & DC and Sega was forced to simply make them off-clones of the two popular super-hero\'s. Therefor, the later copies didn\'t have Spider-Man and Batman in the sense, their logo was the main thing missing. ;)

I may be wrong, but I remember reading that on Classicgaming, I think. I\'m sure Altered could step in and clear this up.

As for Shinobi - my further impressions are this. Damn, this game gets frickin\' hard real fast, however it isn\'t hard enough to make you quit. It only encourages you to get better and better . Run on the wall, lock on enemy, jump , dash, hit, jump, jump, dash to wall..run on wall. It becomes almost second nature and when you do a succesful "tate" attack among everything, you look at the screen amazed that you actually pulled that off . In simple, this game is amazing and probably the best stuff Sega has put out since it went third party.

I think Ninja Gaiden on XBOX will be a better purchase than this one

I don\'t think that was Batman...

Batman is from DC Comics and he didn\'t have wings and fly...

But...eh...

Considering this is a thread about impressions on Shinobi, how does my review not fit in it?  Besides, for this review, even though I gave it an 8.0 and not higher because of its numerous faults, i still REALLY liked the game.  Don\'t be so jealous.  You read it anyways ;)

If the only console you have is the PS2, and you already own GTA3 or GTAVC, then yes, I do recommend Shinobi.  It\'s just plain fun.  Just buy it at EB, play it out for a week straight, then return it for something you might like better if the game doesn\'t float your boat.  At least then you don\'t really lose anything and you technically get 2 games out of it for the price of one.  Otherwise, you can always rent it and see if you like it.

I am glad someone else enjoyed the game. Ryu I read your review, and it was a nice job. If only Sega had upped the graphics a bit more. Either way it is a very nice game.

Somewhat of a sidenote. After playing shinobi for over a week. I picked up splinter cell. It is now back in it\'s xbox package. It feels so slow, and sluggish I just can not switch from the fast paced shinobi just yet. What a shame I was looking forward to splinter cell, and not shinobi.

Unicron I typicallyy  2-3 games a week. Doing this has made me somewhat jaded towards most games. It takes somthing out of the ordinary to catch my attention. Most of the time it is graphics that do it. I have been, and probably will always be a graphics whore. There are very few games that catch my attention with what I consider subpar graphics. This one most definitly did!!

Devil May Cry was a short game, but I logged more time into that game than I did a completed FFX game. I am not sure if you are anything like that, but if so I would say this is a worthwhile purchase. There are different modes to complete. One of them is called insane or somthing like that, with 2 unlockable different behaving extra characters.

As I have said before though. This game gets rough in some spots. I find myself playing no more than 1 world a day to prevent me from bashing my controller against a wall.

If you want to run on walls, and attack at beakneck speeds though. I would buy this one.

I have always been in love with the shinobi series. This game takes the cake. I played this game so hard i fell to sleep. Sega knows how to make games.

Similar criteria to the ones you mentioned usually make me buy a game(because I am low in cash and dont want to regret buying it).I usually buy games that have a well balance of nice graphics and great gameplay. But if its that good despite its not so good looks then it will certainly catch my attention too.(Actually it is catching it more everyday).

I can live with it

Hell yeah.

Ryu unfortunately there is no EB in my country. And I dont think my local videogame stores would take it back and replace it with something else if I dont like it.They arent renting any games either.Only stores selling pirated games might take it back. Thanks for the advice though.I ll try find one that might accept taking it back(Which perhaps I might not even need to return afterall:)).

LOL

Well...uhm....the hell I live in is a stupid island called Cyprus.Bah!!I want to get out of here.99% of the gamers here dont know even what the hell Shenmue and many other games are.You shouldnt even ask help from emploee\'s in many Video Games stores. They know almost shit about games.(Thankfully there is atleast one or 2 stores that know).
