Title: Perhaps the most amazing F1 graphics I\'ve seen...
Post by: seven on November 18, 2002, 09:08:58 AM
Grand Prix Challenge - by Atari developed for PlayStation 2. (Same developers responsible for LeMans 24 hour on Dreamcast).

The game is apparently pushing between 200\'000 and 300\'000 polygons at 50/60 fps, full anti-aliased with no pop up or framerate drops. Don\'t believe me? Download the following video - it surely blew me away, especially knowing that it\'s running on PS2 and out on the 23rd of November in Europe.

AMAZING In-game Footage - 14 MB - MPEG format (http://www.torps.com/GrandPrixChallenge/GPC_footage.mpg)

Some screens:

Because these screens have been doubted, the executive producer of the game has answered many many questions on the GranTurismo forums. If you want to read up on them and find out more about this game, I have posted everything in one thread on my site:

http://www.conceptics.ch/msgboard/thread.php?ID=115&ForumID=20

Any comments? What are you thoughts? I\'ve never been that big of a fan where F1 games are concern, but this game really looks amazing and after reading the comments by the developer, I have fate that this game will deliever, not only in the graphics department, but also in gameplay!

Just a note on the antialiasing - I can\'t let too many of our techniques out, but the game runs at 640X960 pixel resolution - realtime supersampling. Almost all \'normal\' PS2 games are still using 640X480 and the original early ones were a two raw fields of 640X224 - so we have a 4X improvement in resolution compared to early PS2 games and 2X most of the current others (including games on other console platforms).

Maybe I\'m confused with another PS2 F1 game, but recently
I read about some technique like that in a Formula 1 game.
The only downside was they didn\'t have the FIA license.
Does this game indeed HAVE the 2002 FIA license ?

It must have, or else they wouldn\'t be allowed to have all the real cars in. Without the FIA licence, the game would have to contain made up teams with made up drivers, and there would be no way that they would be allowed to use realistically accurate liveries/helmet designs.

That\'s what might put me off buying it, especially seeing that it has "Challange" in the title.

accoarding to the developers, it\'s something inbetween (sim/arcade). He goes on and said that on the highest difficulty setting, it could very well be the most realistic F1 experience you\'ll find. Head to the link I posted to find out more (I\'m too lazy to get the quotes.. ;))

And yeah, they do have the FIA licence.

Ok, so if it\'s so great then, what would you recommend me to do ?
Wait for this game til Nov 23rd and get it or get EA\'s F1 2002 now ? Or get EA\'s F1 2001 at a bargain price ? I\'m not the type
of guy who needs an ultra realistic F1 game though.

hum no idea... I bought the EA\'s F1 Championship Season 2000 and it was a BIG mistake. Fortunately, F1 2001/2002 are a major improvement over the one I bought, but I did hear that it suffers from some minor slowdowns..?!?

Anyway, as of yet, I can only speculate on Grand Prix Challenge and if it will deliever. It has me very tempted though, so I might buy it this friday. If I do, I\'ll surely post my impressions in this thread. :)

300,000 polys a second?  Couldn\'t the PSX do 360,000?  A mistake?  That 1st picture looks good but I\'m pretty sure it won\'t look like that on our TVs, especially after watching that grainy video.

Looks good but I\'m not really interested in F1 games lately.
They could license that engine though.

Not 300,000 per second, 200,000-300,000 on screen (12,000,000-18,000,000 polys/sec).

There\'s a huge difference.

apparently, it does look that good and better on your screen, as the developers are using some special AA in the game (same method Baulders Gate used). I\'ll believe it when I see it too, but it does give me hope to say the least. More impression on Friday I guess....

Grahpics are nice, gameplay doesn\'t look too appealing though.

That Ferrari doesn\'t look all that accurate, and I\'m not just talking about sponsors logos either, the shape of the car doesn\'t bare all that much of a resemblence to the real life Ferrari.

There goes the FIA licence

Actually it does have the FIA licence as I stated before. And as for the logos, I\'m not quite sure, but the devs said that they might add the new cars for the next season if possible... I would have to look for that quote though.

What is this NASCAR?   Cars are bumping and rubbing out there like they aren\'t open wheeled

There is a setting to prevent this, right?

I am the type that will drive 60 laps knowing that contact one time with any other car will result in a spin out and a trip to the pits.  Formula 1 2001 from Eidos on pc gave this to me but this doesnt look to.  I\'ll rent it first and go from there

got to agree with ya Clowd. The dev did mention that the game settings will make quite a difference, but we\'ll see. It would be a shame if it were to be that unrealistic. I still have my hopes high though... 2 more days!!!

Is this game coming to the US. If so when?

Unfortunatly, ive played it today and all i can say is
FLICKER CITY

Game runs nice and smooth and cars look really good. no dropout in framerate at all.. constant 50fps but damn,
needless to say, i came away from the shop empty handed.. Please guys, try and play it first. i can see this game
causing some proper eplieptic (sp?) fits and nausea.

It\' probably has the most flicker ever on PS2. a BIG dissapointment. the PS2 output didnt look anything like the
images shown (resolution wise) remeber, the output stage is downsampling the above image.
The geometry is all intact aswell as most of the textures, maybe it would work better on a vga box or something.
but all in all, the only thing i can gripe about is the flickering, if you can live with it, then you\'ld be fine.

Yeah, I dont see any signs of jaggies whatsoever, but, I would have to say It still doesn\'t have GT3 beat.  Im not really into F1 race games though.

How is the damage?

Do cars have failures?  AI and you?

How is the weather handling?  Can it change mid race?
Title: Perhaps the most amazing F1 graphics I\'ve seen...
Post by: seven on November 22, 2002, 04:25:45 PM
The damage apparently is pretty good, the AI suprisingly good. Going by the impressions on the GranTurismo forum, this is really the best effort to grace a console on F1. The weather changes mid race, so that\'s another plus. What has me a bit worried though is the flickering which I will definately have to check out.

Despite any sort of flickering, going by the impressions on the GT forum, this is a graphical masterpiece. No slowdown, no pop ups what so ever - for a game with 22 cars on track and amazing weather effects, this is quite an achievement.

I really do hope the flickering is due to bad TV (unfortunately Sony uses some bad TVs to display the PS2s, so I\'m hoping there won\'t be any flickering on my TV at least). Anyway, it\'s out soon enough and I\'ll definately get back with some impressions myself once I\'ve gathered them.

If all goes worse, I guess I\'ll be waiting for WRC2 after all. I\'ll be back.

Wow, I have to agree with you on this one too StAnZo  :)
I tried it at a mate\'s today.
The graphics are nothing to write home about, they\'re mediocre. Flickering and jaggies are pretty evident, Framerate is rock solid though, which is nice for a game with 22 cars but I don\'t think it looks as good as those pics that were posted. Most importantly I found the gameplay to be lacking too. Disappointing just like WRC2 and CMR3...

Thanks JP, but i\'m still holding hope for WRC2, apparently the devs (Evolution Studios) cringe at the state of the demo.
The store final has been improved dramatically so i\'ll hold judgment on it until i\'ve had a fling with the final version.
