Title: Helping my fiance buy a new car : Audi A4 1.8T
Post by: GmanJoe on November 19, 2002, 07:40:21 AM
She wanted an AWD car like my Subaru. She really wanted one. But I told her that the Impreza is a hit a miss among people\'s tastes. Her uncle suggested the Lexus RX300 but I said that it\'s just an upgraded Toyota Rav4.

So I suggested the Audi A4. More refined, more luxury and AWD!

Now...I know one of you owns and Audi...but does the Audi 1.8T have good acceleration? I know the turbo seems non-existant in AT form compared to manual. How much is the chip?

She\'s going to the Audi dealer at 1pm today. Also, I heard that Audi dealers don\'t budge too far from MSRP. Blah. Did you get to negotiate a fair price below MSRP?

Thanks.

BMW dealers don\'t budge MSRP either on new cars.

PS:  My loan I just signed yesterday was 5.49% on a 72 month term.  Just letting you know that pretty sweet rates are out there.

I first got one from ELoan at 5.64%, but the dealership got me the 5.49 after some haggling.  The best he could do out of the gate was 5.69 for 60 months.   Knowing I had the eloan rate made him work real hard on getting me a better rate so he could still get the cash.  I did it through Lending tree.

Hmm....thanks. The rates are better these days! THANK YOU ALLEN GREENSPAN! :D

Now....I wonder if she\'ll get the 1.8T or go for the 2.8? Hmmm.....

Well, I dunno about the US, but here in DK the A4 1.8T is 150 hp. Change the chip and it\'s some 200 hp. Change a few other things and it\'s about 225-250 hp.

Audi\'s and VW\'s respond VERy well to chips, so that is always a decent upgrade along with a bigger downpipe/catback system.

Chips are anywhere from 399-499 from APR and will yield gains anywhere from 206hp/245lb-ft to 214hp/247lb-ft.

The audi isnt a bad choice at all, just a little bland for my tastes. The 02 or 03\'s look much better then previous years with only minimal change.

As far as reliability, I have heard everything from great to horror stories, so I guess it\'s hit or miss.

The only A4 I have been in was already chipped, full catback, and complete suspension upgrade, so I really cant give you an accurate desc. of accel since the one you check out will be stock.

My Credit Union recently approved my car loan at 4.875% for 60 months.  I think some of the online lenders like Eloan etc. should be able to offer 4.5% if your credit is good.  (Above 700 FICO score).  I fully expect the dealerships I\'m negotiating with to offer an even better rate.  I was already offered 3% by a dealer, but I\'m more focused on reducing the sale price of the car I\'m buying.

car-stats.com reports that a \'99 A4 1.8T Quattro gets 16.2 in the quarter mile which is poop.  If what luckee and Samwise say about a VW chip is true get it ASAP. :)

Congratulations!  That should be a great car.  I don\'t know why more people don\'t buy the "x" AWD version of BMW\'s autos, but they don\'t   I keep my eyes open, and I hardly ever see them around.  Good choice!

It\'s funny.  I was driving last night and I was getting on the interstate.  I was in tiptronic mode in 3rd gear.  I was just sitting there watching my RPMs go up.  Wasn\'t watching my speedometer.  I was going up to 4000 RPM when I looked at the speedometer and i was already at 80 mph.

I am going to get into trouble.  I\'m use to an explorer.

85 is a great cruising speed in this car.  It feels like you are going 60.

My co producer has an audi and an s2000.  His wife seems to love the audi.  Are you getting the CVT?

CVT:  multitronicâ„¢ Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Shiftless tranny.  It\'s pretty neat.  You don\'t feel any of the shift points.  Although it\'s kind of weird at first.  leaves you waiting for the shift.  Kind of like listening to a symphony and they leave out the last note.

She blasts the stereo anyway so it won\'t matter to her. :D

Unlike me, I like to listen to the sound of the engine. :p

THEN GET THE 330!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It\'s only money!!!!  Continnuously variable valve timing gives thing a nice chunk of torque at the lower end of the gear.  you will be modding the hell out of the 325 cause I guarantee you you won\'t be happy with the accelleration.  I already would love to mod mine, but the darn warrenty thing...

the Subaru hit and miss?  Everybody I know loves my car.  Plus you\'re talking about 15 Gs difference between it and the A4.

As far as MSRP you have to deal around.  You will find a dealer who\'ll go lower if you look at the hot spots.  For me the hot spot is Memphis.  The thing about Audis is there\'s usually only very few dealers in 1 state.  Where do you live Gman?
