I\'ve put in 3 hours of Metroid Prime gameplay, and so far the high acclaim from journalists is well-deserved IMO.
Graphics: Some of the textures aren\'t groundbreaking, but in general this is arguably the prettiest game ever. Very organic, lots of effects, tons of stuff on-screen, 60fps 99.9% of the time.. it is astounding at times. Everything makes so much sense. Your visor/blaster/etc interacts with the environment; if it\'s raining, look straight up and you\'ll see raindrops on your visor.. look down a bit and the gun\'ll get wet.. look straight down and your back is getting wet. I love it. Everything is ultra-varied as far as textures and polygons go. Sure, there\'s no bump-mapping or detail textures (as seen in TS2, Halo, and Unreal) but there is so much stuff in every environment that you\'ll be floored anyway. The draw distance is great too. No, you can\'t see a mile away like in Super Mario Sunshine, but there are big outdoor areas being drawn with tons of enemies on-screen at a constant 60fps.. with the pre-mentioned high levels of detail. Those level designers put in over-time I tell ya, because nothing is obvious. A lot of the platforms and stuff you see appear to have been constructed out of rubble.. there are few solid bridges here folks.
Sound: I love it, I love it a lot. It fits extremely well.. exactly how Metroid should sound in 3D.
Music: I love it, I love it, I loveitiloveitiloveit! *kicks his feet up in the air* Especially that main menu theme! Yeah, there are new songs and remixes of old Metroid favorites. (this will become evident once you reach Tallon IV)
Gameplay: Okay, this game makes two things very obvious. A: It\'s a Nintendo game, B: It\'s a Metroid game. Perhaps the best 2D-to-3D transition I\'ve seen. It\'s not evident at first, but get far enough into the game and WHAM! it\'ll hit you like a sack of bricks: Metroid Prime is Super Metroid in 3D. Polished like you wouldn\'t believe.
To get into gameplay specifics.. well, I\'ll say it again: Super Metroid in 3D. The physics are better this time around though. The Morph Ball is awesome, the jumping is surprisingly good.. the visor system works well.
Now.. the biggest concern for many players is control. Let me tell ya.. it\'ll be a wee bit difficult to get used to.. but once you\'ve sat down for an hour it\'ll be second nature. The lock-on targetting (reminisent of Zelda 64) is spot-on, and the controls are very intuitive. One thing you might want to do is drop your "FPS" mentality because this game doesn\'t control like a Halo-style console FPS; it\'s more like GoldenEye but even a little different than that!
Finally, longevity.. is Metroid Prime long enough?
I saved it at 3:05 into the game, explored lots of areas.. and it says 8%. :)
If you have a GCN, drop what you\'re doing and buy this. If you don\'t have a GCN, drop what you\'re doing and buy one with Metroid Prime. And if you have something against Metroid.. just give in. Otherwise you\'ll be missing out on one of the best games of this generation.
-
I played it for 3-4 hours over at my friends house today.
TO make it short I personally think this is one the GC best games so far, as I have not been impressed with previous GC games, other than the boring RE
-
I am going to have to get this one I suppose. Thanks for the impression Blade.
-
Amazing, brilliant, gorgeous, beautiful, superb, kick ass...quite possibly the best thing to come out of this generation, IMO. And I\'ve only put an hour on it!
To anyone who was worried about it not retaining the look and feel of old Metroid...worry not. Retro did their homework and put so much effort into this game. The environments are amazing, the music is excellent, and the action is so reminiscent of past Metroid games.
To all the naysayers, I\'m very pleased to say you were 100% wrong. They have pulled off the morph ball in a way that can\'t be described...the grapling hook is equally a pleasure to pull off. (Although I\'ve only used it 2 times so far).
Fighting enemies...it\'s fast, frantic, and a blast. Locking on is easy, strafing, and side dashing is a breeze.
The experience thus far earns a 10. Everything is here and you\'d be fooling yourself to think this is not Metroid or a great game.
Copied and pasted from another thread...I\'m now at 3 hours and 12%..it keeps getting better:)
-
Bah. I\'m playing it now and I\'m not impressed...
-keeps goin\', just in case I\'m missing something-
Well, it\'s offical. I hate this game. It\'s yet another FPS with a shiny new coat. I don\'t see how any of you can say it represents the Metriod franchise in a good manner. It\'s a disgrace. Samus should be 2D and it\'s that simple. Oh, lookie, I can use a scan visor. Blah, blah.
-goes back to Metriod fusion and puts Prime away for the rest of time, until a desperate moment at least-
-
It\'s yet another FPS with a shiny new coat.
Your negative opinion, or everyone else\'s beyond positive opinions...tough call. ;)
-
LiC: Your opinion seems so negative that I\'m not sure if you\'re joking or serious.. :)
Yeah, the first area (space station) left me feeling.. bleh too. I mean, it\'s a decent introduction (with the superb escape and all) but I thought that the opening to Super Metroid was better. Once I got deep into the main game though, I felt a lot of the same stuff that I felt in Super Metroid and the other Metroid titles..
Except that it was first-person. :) Retro did a great job, but it\'s obvious that Nintendo had a big hand in development because a lot of this game reeks of R&D1 (original Metroid team) and Shigeru Miyamoto.
I see hints of Mario and Zelda in MP.. and only Nintendo themselves could do such a thing.
Retro Studios is great, though.. I can\'t wait to see what they\'re working on next. I don\'t care if it\'s a franchise game or not, if it has the polish that MP has.. I\'ll be pre-ordering way ahead of time!
Hopefully it won\'t take as long though.. (preliminary work on MP was started in early 1999)
-
LIC...that was predictable.
You\'ve been protesting the game since it was announced.
I have to disagree with your "it\'s just another FPS". It\'s clearly in a league of its\' own and you obviously haven\'t played it enough to get that impression.
There is so much to explore...I just got the morph ball boost and space jump...I\'m going back to previous levels and finding more stuff.
Seriously, let the wall down for a minute and give it another go.
-
LIC...that was predictable.
You\'ve been protesting the game since it was announced.
I can back this up, in fact, I was the one who was always trying to tell him that Metroid wasn\'t going to be another FPS and said it was still possible to have the same classic Metroid feeling in a first-person perspective. I hate to say it, but LIC is just being ignorant here.
-
I don\'t think this game is AMAZING, incredible, speelbounding etc...
I do think it\'s a great GC game, and deserves a hand or 2. Personally I liked HALO WAY WAY better, none the less this is a game in it\'s own class.
-
In its own class and "liked HALO WAY WAY BETTER" are very contradictory terms. If it\'s in a class all its own, you can\'t compare it to Halo. :)
-
After playing MP, my opinion dropped on Halo, big-time.
It\'s got good physics and solid combat, but MP is more immersive.. more hands-on. MP > Halo, easy.
I haven\'t even finished Halo yet. It got too repetitive, and no level in the game could match the quality and fun factor of "Halo" and "The Silent Cartographer". MP on the other hand has no levels, and the gameplay goes beyond the simplistic FPS stylings of Halo. Halo is still a good game on its own merits, but IMO MP is better.
-
Hits Blade over the head with my xbox...
don\'t compare them!!! They are totally different games...both happen to be top class.
-
In its own class and "liked HALO WAY WAY BETTER" are very contradictory terms. If it\'s in a class all its own, you can\'t compare it to Halo
Not really, but you do have a point. Let me better explain myself.
Not the same game, but still in the same ball field way out in the back. Both are FPS(say what you will) etc... to make this short they share cetain simularites, but in the end metriod is a different game. Out of the 2 I find HALO to be far more emersive to me, it\'s grabs my attention much stronger than metriod does.
Like you said RYU it\'s almost like comparing apples and oranges.
People here in this thread are finding this game to be GODY which is very much there right, I on the other hand disagree, I think it\'s an excellent GC game but nothing more and can see why some are not drawn to this game.
Fun game to play, but seriouly I have had enough of MP after playing another 2 hours today.
Here i\'ll give you a FPS that beats MP and HALO....are you ready
Unreal Tournament BABY!!!!!!!!!!!! Best game I have ever played in my life all due to it\'s online factor
-
Ginko: I\'m fully aware of their differences. I\'ve been playing FPS\'s since 1994.. they\'re my most-played genre. Halo is not comparable to MP in most cases, but I feel that MP\'s first-person single-player gameplay is superior to Halo\'s. Halo is a great game, but is overrated IMO. After playing games like MP, I look back at Halo and it seems bland.
-
/me maintains that this game is an abmoniation to the series.
-
Just curious...how far are you, LIC?
-
NOt very far - which is why I\'m trying to give it another go as I type this.
I\'m sorry, its just if I have my choice on this or any other Metriod game, espically Fusion - which kicks ass, I\'ll take fusion.
Like I said, I\'m in the process of giving it another go right now, just in case you\'re right Ginko.
-
I\'m right...and so is everyone else.
When you start having to use your morph ball just as much as walking, switching between the visors and different arm cannons on the fly and try to stay alive. Space Jump, morph ball boost, spider ball...I could go on and on:)
If anything, the boss fights will bring back that old Metroid feeling.
-
Clip, when I started playing Prime, I felt the same as you did. Actually, I was quite tired of the game after half an hour. Sure, I watched the station explode in rather mediocre fashion far surpassed by Super Metroid, and land on the planet and proceed to pick up a few of the items I had originally, but once that manditory crap fell off the radar, I was hooked. The first hour to two hours of the game is an absolute bore, but once you pass that portion up, the game sails smoothly and really falls into its own. Just give it a chance and if after the first boss you still abore it, then by all means fling it into the trash. I honestly had no love for the game until just after the first boss and the game just clicks with me naturally now. It\'s just a matter of time and the same people calling it "just another fps" are those who could never get past that first two hours sadly.
-
The boss fights give me more of a Zelda:TOOT feeling than a Metroid feeling.. :)
This game is like Super Metroid meets Zelda:TOOT meets GoldenEye. It\'s got a lot of Nintendo influence.

Wanna send your copy to me? I want this game SO BAD, but it wont come in for a while because of shipping delays.
PM the details :D

Welp, I\'ve put in around 25 hours of game-time.. beaten the game.. gathered 94% of the dozens of elusive power-ups/log information.. and all I have to say is this: Good job Nintendo.. good job Retro. Oh, and thank you Jesus. This is easily the best game on GameCube. Better than my previous picks, among them Pikmin and SMS.
Why? Well, for one thing.. it\'s arguably the most polished game I\'ve ever played. That deserves something, doesn\'t it? Heck, as far as 3D games go.. I might as well call it the most polished game I\'ve played. So detailed, both in the environment and in the amount of story and more prominently information gathered by the Scan visor. The music, a mix of new tunes and well-done remixes of songs from Metroid and Super Metroid.. it fits so well. The controls, a gripe for many.. are spot-on IMO.
This game is what you get when you mix the stellar gameplay of Metroid with the luscious graphics and atmosphere of a good id Software game, then combine it with the genius of Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo\'s EAD department. No expense was spared here.. everything feels right. This is Zelda 64 meets Super Metroid, as far as production values go.
How somebody could flat-out disregard this game as LiC has is.. well.. I just don\'t believe it.
Not liking Mario Sunshine I can understand, but MP did so many things right. Graphics, gameplay, atmosphere, sound/music, level design, relatively adult themes, replay value, and most importantly the presentation that SMS lacked! There are no embarrassing cut-scenes here folks! No occasional bugs, no occasional camera issues.. no difficult platforming stages!
There is nothing to complain about! :)
IMO, anybody that has a GCN should own this game.
It just clicked with me. The critics are right. Be warned, though.. once you get about 10 hours in and realize that the game is going to end, you\'re going to be disappointed! Much like SMS, I wish that MP never ended. :(
At least it takes forever to end. This is definitely the longest Metroid quest ever.. and the richest.
-
Disregard? I didn\'t disregard. I gave it a chance and decided it was complete crap. I support blowing up Retro studio\'s at this point and plan on trading my copy of Prime off, A.S.AP.
As for your comment on "no annoying bugs", I have to wonder if you are playing the same game as the rest of Prime owners. There is a couple spots where the game seems to randomly freeze. I thought I was the only one with the problem, but after searching on GameFaq\'s.com Prime social board, there was a bunch of people with the same problem in the same spot, but no one could figure out what circumstance was causing it.
Dissapointment of the year - well, it would be if I was actually expecting something from it.
-
Okay, that post was obviously made in jest because if this game is an utter trash-can disappointment, you must have a hard time stomaching 99% of other video games  .. anyways..
Yes, there is a potential for freezing.. but guess what? I have 98% of this game completed.. 27 hours.. log book over 90% complete.. and I\'ve been everywhere. How many times did it freeze? Twice, both in the 8-9 hour completion range. Where/why did it freeze? One time going down an elevator, the other time in a transitional tunnel. (going from big room to big room) I assume that the nearly complete lack of loading times is caused by constant streaming; if the streaming gets a major hiccup, you might see a freeze. This is probably a problem more with the system, less with the game.
That said, I\'ve been up and down the same elevators/tunnels that the freezes occurred in at least 5 times apiece by now.. and nothing\'s happened. LiC.. did you burn your copy of Super Metroid the second you started playing it or something? I\'d have to say that only a hardcore Metroid hater could speak of MP like you do.
This game is really really good, IMO.. perhaps one of the best ever.. and I\'ve played a lot of games. Oh, and I was never hardcore into Metroid before either. As a child I owned and played Metroid and Super Metroid but not until this year did I beat either. (in anticipation of MP, no less) I can\'t believe that I missed out on this stuff! Hehe, it sounds like I\'m worshipping Metroid here. :) Kinda sad really, but I\'m something of an old-school and fairly hardcore gamer.. and when a game comes along that\'s this good.. I just feel compelled to express my thoughts about it.
-
Actually I do have a problem standing 99% of the trash companies put out and try to pass off as "quality games".
Hardcore Metriod hater? Hardly. I\'ve loved every Metriod game, \'cept for Prime. I love Fusion and all the Metriod\'s before it. Every Metriod before this has passed my expectations. Infact, Super Metriod is my all time favorite game.
I\'m glad you enjoyed Prime - but Prime for me was complete trash. It wasn\'t so much the FPS view (tho\' it did suck) but the whole game didn\'t click for me. The same as I thought Halo was one of the worst games last year, GTA3 and the list goes on. These new critically acclaimed games just don\'t seem to offer anything, in my opinion.
-
However not to say it needs more polish because the game is polished...very polished maybe too polished. Where its almost not as fun as it should be. Sterile is more like it.
Its like a super-model, great looks but no heart. Just another new next gen game. This incarnation has nothing to do with its previous namesakes. Only in name and concept and barely that.
Dont get me wrong I like the game but expected more feeling. The game feels cold.

Fair enough. At least you explained your disgust this time. :) I guess that\'s just your tastes, LiC. I\'m just totally "down" with this game, though.. as is nearly everybody else that I know who owns the game.
Honestly, I\'d urge you to give it another chance, but you probably already have.. so.. nevermind.
May I ask, though.. did you also consider Zelda:OOT complete trash?
Jiggs: It didn\'t seem to have any less feeling than Zelda 64, SMS, or any of Nintendo\'s recent AAA games. To me, MP is a different side to Nintendo.. but at times all too reminiscent of Super Metroid. This game is extremely fun to me.. albeit in a different way than most games. It\'s fun in the way that Metroid games are fun.
Really, I\'m still shocked that LiC thinks that MP = complete trash. This game is f\'ing amazing, IMO.. worthy of the 98% reviews on Game Rankings. Worthy of the Metroid name, definitely. Cold? Maybe a little, but other Metroid games were no "warmer". Cold and desolate is the way that Metroid has felt all along. This isn\'t Pokemon.
-
I\'m not sure LIC likes any game that\'s not 2-D,arcady,and doesn\'t feature fireballs.
-
I don\'t think there are any non-2D non-arcade games that feature fire-balls
Well, maybe a few Capcom games ;)
-
That is not true. I have enjoyed quite a few non-2D games. Mark of Kri? Loved it. Sky Gunner? Adored it. The list goes on and on. There is plenty of non-2D "arcady" games that don\'t feature fireballs that I do indeed love.
Jigg\'s nailed this one though. The game lacks a soul. I never once felt sucked into it or cared what was goin\' on. It felt over-produced.
PS. Zelda:OoT was great as was Super Mario 64. Super Mario Sunshine, well, that was trash..
-
Just wondering how far people are into this game. I need 1 suit than Im done with all the primary Items. Right now the boss Im up to is the Omega Pirate. Hes sorta hard. Killed me twice although the second time I came very close. Ive gotten 3 or 4 Artifacts and im about 50% done with the game and about 10 hours into it.
-
27:30, 100% completion on Normal mode, Galleries 1 and 4 unlocked. I stand by my acclaim of MP.
Someday soon I\'m planning to go back and beat it on Hard Mode and scan everything. If you miss scanning any log-book entries and they get destroyed or unreachable (like the space station boss) that\'s it.
You get Gallery 2 for beating Hard Mode and Gallery 3 for 100% log-book. Or vice-versa.. I dunno. :)
-
Now that Ive stayed up playing all night I got all 12 artifacts, fought and beat that meta ridley and have entered the crash site. Im about 13 hours into it and 57% complete.

I\'m not saying your wrong but for you to say Halo was one of the worst games of last year. You might not of liked it but seriously, same applies for Prime and GTA3.
-
Just a question, Im fighting Prime right now and I really need to know which on of my beams is the phazon fused one cause I dont seem to be hurting him with any attack so far.
-
Gimmie a break, Halo was so very over-rated. Run. Jump. Shoot. Run. Jump. Shoot. Hey, look, it\'s the same level I was in twice before! I\'ll be damned, that\'s just amazing! Ohh, there\'s a beach! I\'m walkin\' in it, but there is no water ripples..The list goes on of the dissapointments that Halo containted...and don\'t even get me started on GTA3 or Prime.....
-
I\'ve had this game for over a week, and I can honestly say myself it alone is worth buying a gamecube.
If anyone is thinking about buying Steel Battallion, this will cost you roughly the same and give you more bang for your buck.
-
My comment stands. Just cause you don\'t like it doesn\'t mean it\'s one of the worst games of the year.
-
Most overrated game of the year isn\'t untrue though... I agree with most everything LIC said about Halo, Prime, etc.... I liked GTA3 though...
-
LiC: We already discussed this, but I\'ll say it again: you have a problem with Halo. Okay, I understand.
It sounds like you\'re just hating Metroid Prime for the sake of it, though.
Honestly, I still find it hard to believe that anybody who adored both Super Metroid and OoT could flat-out hate this game considering how polished the gameplay and graphics are. For the first time in a while, Nintendo gets almost every aspect of a game perfect.. and you can\'t stop bad-mouthing it! What games do you like? :)
It seems like you\'re a little picky.
-
I expect more from my games than you do, obviously.
I adored both SM and OoT - but this game doesn\'t do it for me. And no, I don\'t hate it "for the sake of it" - hell I paid for the damn game. I gave it a chance and the whole time I felt this anger swelling up. I didn\'t see how they did anything right, \'cept the transformation to the morph ball.
I watched Capcom play MP (I traded him it for Tekken 4 - another shit game) . He was getting into it, enjoying it. Morph balling, double jumping and goin\' on about how it was actually pretty good and ya\' know what? It still looked like a boring FPS with a few Metriod elements.
Yes, I\'m picky. If I pay $50 dollars for a game I expect the game to wow me in some fashion or another . MP didn\'t do it for me at all. In my humble opinion, the game will go down as the Metriod game to ruin a great series - well not ruin it, just kill it.
As for Retro , I still think they should be taken out and flogged until they either pass out or die. It is (in my opinion) an abnomination to the series. And for Miyamoto and his cracked idea on making Metriod a FPS and , well, I\'d say shoot him, but I still want my Pikimin 2!
;)
/me goes back to playing Metriod Fusion a true Metriod game...
-
Haha, :)
I\'m sorry, buddy.. I think that you have a right to think that. It\'s just so ironic how some folks can be..
Everybody\'s different, I guess. There\'s no two ways about it!
BTW, I have fairly high standards for my games. Just because you mysteriously hate games that are widely regarded as great (SMS, MP) doesn\'t mean that it\'s really crazy to love them like I do. ;)
I\'d like to add that Pikmin is among my favorite GCN games. I hope a sequel comes out, fast! Oh, and Metroid Fusion is kickass.. isn\'t it? Short and linear, but this is Metroid.. not sucking up ghosts with a vacuum!
I still think that MP is better, though. Fusion is barely an evolution of Super Metroid.. they just went and perfected the controls.. added nice cut-scenes.. and created a new quest. It\'s a must-have GBA cart, but MP is so rich with detail and the gameplay is just plain addictive. Nevermind that it\'s around 5 times as long as MF.
My ranking for Metroid games:
1/2. Metroid Prime and Super Metroid. They flip-flop.
3. Metroid Fusion
4. Metroid
5. Metroid II: Return of Samus
The first two weren\'t bad games by any means, I just think that R&D1 improved on the formula so much (with such similar gameplay) that they\'re made obsolete by newer 2D Metroid titles.
-
I agree with ya\' Blade. Not everyone has to like the same game. ;)
No offense towards you in any of my posts, Buddy. Just thought I\'d clear that up.
