Damn, that WAS the fastest production car in the US that year.  Even beat the vette.  I remember wanting one of those so bad...  Instead I had an 86 Mustang SVO which suprised the hell out of some IROC\'s being it was only a 4 cyl turbo...  I still miss that car.

You are joking right?  Think of a Monte Carlo SS with a V6 Turbo in it.  It was the king back in its day (1986/87).  Oh it was a Buick to boot. ;)

Grand Nationals, even today, are feared by a lot of people. Those cars can easily do 13s all day...slightly tweaked. A seriously modded on will do high 10s all day. They are among the few American "muscles cars" to have turbos.

The ass raping of this ricer will be legendary. :p

I\'ll be surprised to find a Grand National for sale under $10,000. These are rare cars.

I have to agree, the GN was/is a true mans car.  Even for being automatic those things would burn rubber just by flooring it.

And you dont even have to go WOT to spin them. Damn torque monsters. ONly thing better than a grand national is the GNX. Basically the same car..better suspension, upgrade turbo..seats..etc..etc.

Oh I had forgotten about that version... damn dude, I haven\'t seen a GN in years.

It\'s my goal this lifetime to get at least a GN, I really want a GNX, I just dont think they are worth the 30k I have seen them reach.

I know they were limited production and all, but damn.

Uh wasn\'t that a Regal?  Or maybe a regular monte... definitely not a GN or a Monte SS.

That was a 78 or 79 Monte Carlo in Training Day, and yes, they can be very pimp.

I\'m going to buy a 92 Camaro Z28 (I hope). If I hear one of those kids that tricks out their Honda\'s and say they are so cool with this or that, I\'ll challenge them to a race. You can\'t beat American sports cars. Stock, they\'d rape a Civic suped up.

What about a TTA? Same engine, lighter car, also more sportier looking.

But they didnt have ASC/McLaren touches :D PLus I think the GNX\'s had a little more hp over the TA\'s.

Eh, that definatly depends on how you define \'beating\' American sports cars... I can think of plenty of sports cars that spank American sports cars in terms of build quality, speed, elegance etc. etc.

Post by: GmanJoe on November 23, 2002, 07:06:55 AM
The GN in question might be a GNX. Weren\'t they released in \'87 or \'88? Only downside to Grand Nationals is that they\'re all automatics, I believe. With that much torque, I\'d like to be able to have a little more control over the engine.

As for beating American Sports cars, that may be true in the 1/4 mile. It\'s hard to beat the American torque monsters. But most great races aren\'t in the straight 1/4 mile. The road course requires more skill, better tuned suspsension, requires better aerodynamics, yada yada yada.

Anyway....let this be a warning. Sun Tsu\'s Art of War states "Know your enemy" , "Choose your battles wisely" , and "To attack an enemy greater than you, choose a terrain that tilts the battle in your favor".

In my case, the snow, rain, dirt AND twisties! :D

So, just coz some guy with a Yugo is revving his engine at you, listen closely. Is that  a stock engine? Or something more? "Know your enemy." :)

I\'m talking about in a race. Quality also is pretty good with US cars. We had a Mercury Sable for over 10 years, like 115000-130000 miles and didn\'t have a problem (until something went wrong that is supposedly fixable). I don\'t look at elegance when I look for a car. That actually repels me. I like a sporty car. That\'s why I\'m not a big fan of Mercedes cars. Too luxerious for me (except the more stock ones). Thats why a lot of American sports cars win Lemans and other endurance races. But then there\'s the rivalry between Corvette and Viper, two top American race cars. I love both race cars but I like Viper better, although they are starting to get spanked by Team Vette. I\'m not saying that they never lose. They do lose. I\'m talking about two stock cars, American Camaro vs. a Honda Civic. Which would get spanked? But a Camaro vs. a RX-7. That would be pretty close but Camaro would probably win. Its a bit faster. But a Camaro vs. a UK (I think) Lamborgini, any American stock sports car would get bent over and raped.

Why would you even compare cars that arent even in the same class\' or even similar?

Lamborgini is an Italian car. :p

regal, monte, same thing...

I want a \'77 monte carlo painted in 3 different shades of primer, with a chian-link lisence plate holder, and a sticker of calvin pissing on a ford symbol.

Whatever, points still the same. If a Lamborgini and a Camaro or Mustang were to drag down a highway, the Camaro or Mustang would get raped. But they aren\'t in the same class so.....

True, perhaps. American sports cars are typically tourge monsters, as mentioned above. So if that\'s your thing that\'s great.

[/b]Well, I wasn\'t talking about how long it\'ll last. I was talking about build quality, interior etc., a place where American cars usually ends up last - even on more expensive cars. They\'re a bit notorius for that outside the US. No disrespect, it\'s just how it is.

[/b]Well, that\'s a moot point. And elegance doesn\'t mean it can\'t be a sporty car (Ferrari anyone?).

[/b]Eh? These are the winners of LeMans since 1990:

1990    JAGUAR XJR
1991    MAZDA 787
1992    PEUGEOT 905
1993    PEUGEOT 905

2001    AUDI R8
2002    AUDI R8

Mostly European and some Japanese cars as far as I can see? BTW, Tom Kristensen (who won the last three years I believe) is from Denmark - and even better, from the very city I live in. My uncle and aunt are neighbours to his parents. :)

I think he was talking about the GTS catagory of LeMans where Viper owns. If not Viper, then it\'s the C5-R\'s.

Chevy and Chrysler has deeper pockets than the other GTS team. Ferrari spends most of its money on the LMP cars.

But I prefer GTS. Coz you\'ll never see an LMP race car on public roads.

They are MAINLY SR class race cars. However, Viper didnt\' enter the scene until like 96, 97 but they always won in their class. I wasn\'t talking about the whole race because the SR and SRII cars always win because of their design. But now Viper (in their class) are in a rivalry between Team Corvette which is fun to watch them race :)

If you read my first post, I said that a stock Camaro would probably beat out a suped up Civic ;)

Which Camaro? An RS? Not likely against a suped up Civic Si.

Camaro SS? Again, I\'ve seen 12 second Civics before that\'s barely street legal. It all depends on the amount of work done to the modifed car.
