Other top ranked nations were France, Japan, United Kingdom and Canada. Sweden also tops the chart as the country where the most percentage (89%) of the population can speak at least one foreign language fluently.
The United States was placed second to last. Only 13% of the Americans know where Afghanistan is and only 13% knew where Iraq is.
All this according to the German version of National Geographic’s (National Geographic Deutschland).

Well it would of course make sense that european countries would do well since you guys are like freaking states you are so small. Hell, I know where indiana is. Isn\'t that like knowing Lybia?
-
^That\'s a good point. All the earopean countries are small and bunched up together(clustered).
Also, our educational(I\'m from Canada, similar to the US then) systems are probably different from european education. The US will have you focusing on memorising states, not other countries while Sweden may do the opposite.
But, the main thing here is who gives a flying **** who can point out another country on the map.

The questions were not only about Europe, they asked questions about countries throughout the world. (Asia, Africa, America ect)
But its pretty much common knowlege that yanks are not very good at geography.. ;)

You should have seen Europe back in the 14th century. Germany had something over 100 small kingdoms :)

Yep its a possibility.
But when I went to school they made us memorize our small provinces (ie I live in the province Småland. Stockholm is in the Södermanland province.) .. We have 25 provinces. (http://www.ch-design.net/landskapsringen/images/landskap.gif)
Then again we have one of the best educational systems in the world :)

Obviously you don’t. :)

Hell, when Bush, our president, was running for election, he didn\'t even know that Austria was in Europe. We have some smart people here, but we have a ton of really stupid ones too.

Yeah, I knew we sucked at Geography. Sad, I know where most shit is...Geography and History - for the most part, easy.
See Yuz.

My point wasn\'t that they were only about europe. I was mainly saying that countries in europe have a head start on knowing where a heck of a lot of countries are because they are all bunched up right there. Just like we have states.
Although I realize americans are notorious about being ignorant about other countries.
Heck, if you gave me a blank map I would get probably a good 60% of the countries wrong in the world yet I\'d get all 50 states.
-
Lol.
Americans are stupid.
Was watching Leno one night... he had his jaywalking thing. Asked some chick what the highest point on the EARTH was... she replied MARS. Leno said it again, then she said PLUTO.
-
we don\'t know much about geography because as a whole we\'re very ethnocentric. This could be because of the narcissistic attitude that we have, it could also be because we\'re pretty much seperated from the rest of the world because of us being seperated from most continents by an ocean. Either way, I\'m not going to loose any sleep over it.
-
I don\'t know any other countries locations because I just don\'t care about the little people.
-
Pfft, I\'ll out geographi all you alls!
-
Word. America has its handful of brilliant minds as well. Don\'t let the illegal immigrants and rednecks fool you.

Thanks for mentioning me! :)

You also have much fewer people living in your countries, we have more, so the percentage rate is more likely going to be higher, as more people=more stupid people!!!
-

this is because most americans (i.e. my parents) are ignorant fools which are guled to there football and reality tv shows and do not have enough sense to care about what is going on in the world. they think the problems will fix themselves.
i wish i went to school in japan where they value their educational system.
most americans probably did not know there even was a country called iraq before they invaded kuwait. this is the reason other countries are displeased with america and americans in general.
with that being said....i still love this country.
-
Its an honest mistake about afghanistan, all tucked down south :)
-

-
I got a 74% not bad.

I\'m not surprised. The only public schools I went to only made sure that we knew the name, location, and capital of the 50 states. Other than that, it was in World History. They would make sure we knew where the ancient Harapan civilization was etc, etc.
-
I still can\'t quite comprehend why educated people of every civilized country shouldn\'t be able to pinpoint most major countries to a certain degree. I mean, isn\'t it fairly common sense to be thinking of the outside world sometimes? Do you ever look at a world map?? Do you read books?
Personally I like to be educated and I love to read. I want to learn about other countries, cultures, arts, history etc. because I find it fasinating and interesting.
*baffled*
EDIT: Got all the answers right on the quiz. :p
-
If you give me a map, I know where most of the countries are. Capitals is another story :)

They ARE able to pinpoint most major countries to a certain degree. Just not as well as other countries. The education makes the difference. And should it really baffle you that most people do not look at a map this often? Are we suppose to have maps posted everywhere?
Do you read books?
Now you are just being an ass.
-
I didn\'t mean only Americans - I meant people in general.
And yeah, looking at a world map wouldn\'t hurt anyone. But of course Jerry Springer and McD might take up all your time. :p
-
SWEDEN????
Like that\'s a surprise. Sweden (and northern Europe like ole Samwise Gamgee here ;) ) spawned roving Vikings thoughout Europe and the Mediterrenian Sea. Some went as far as North America.
No freaking surprise there. THEY KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE! THEY WILL PILLAGE AND PLUNDER YOUR VILLAGE!
And the famous line from the most popular Christian prayer :
"And deliver us from the Norsemen, Amen"
Changed later on after the Norsemen discovered video games. :p
-
I would really liked to have seen the people who participated in the survey for the US.
I bet one of them was Bush.
-
America the worst. Thats because everyone thinks all those countrys are in the United States and many could care less. Two massive bodys of water does not help much.
Isolation does that to the people.

Thanks for taking our quiz. You answered 89% of the questions correctly.
The Kashmir question f\'d me up :(

Our school system sucks because left leaning, feel good, eat your alfalfa sprouts parenting has taken our system down the drain.
When you have schools teaching kids to feel good about themselves instead of teaching them that 2+1=3, this is what you get . . . little brains filled with mush.

Exactly, they focus more on how to be nice and right/wrong than the education they need. Let parents parent and teachers teach.
-
GmanJoe: Thats correct.. Leif Eriksson was the first to sail to America. Later about 25 000 "Vikings" settled in America (according to Thor Heyerdahl) from the coast of Canada all the way down to New York.

Russia was a form of colony to the Sveas (later Swedes).
Nice quiz.. I got all of them right. :)
