From Nikkei:
It will be merger" in ENIX and Square "next year 4 month.
ENIX and Square, a major game company, announced on the 26th that they merge on April 1, next year. A merger of major game makers is the first. Competition is intensifying by increase of development expense, or an overseas maker\'s rise, and the game industry strengthens a profit base while heightening development power by merger.
A new company name is "ENIX, Square," and a surviving company is ENIX. 0.81 stocks of ENIX stocks are assigned to one stock of Square stock. A merger new company will expect the consolidated sales of 80 billion yen, and net earnings of 15 billion yen at the term ended March, 2005.
Square is holding "Final Fantasy" and ENIX is holding the "Dragon Quest" series and popular software. Failure of a movie enterprise is echoed and Square will fall to the consolidated net loss for two consecutive terms by the first half. Management -- the Sony group takes over capital increase -- was getting worse. On the other hand, since achievements were large and ENIX was changed by the existence of hot-selling product "DORAKUE" sale, strengthening of a profit base was years of subject. (12:25)

I wonder where Sony stands on this. They own like nearly 20% of Square.

Maybe we\'ll actually see FFXI released now.

It\'s been a while since I played any of them, VII I played about a year ago. I wasn\'t particularily impressed with VII, as I\'ve grown used to the FF series, and started expecting more from games.
All in all, I like them. The best out of the series? Hmm.. I dunno, I like them all pretty equally. Maybe IV, V, and VI. I, II and III were on the original Famicom, so writing down long passwords became really tedious after a while, but the games were good.
Okay, so this was a pretty much pointless post. Basically, I liked them when they came out, but if you played them now, I don\'t think you\'ll find anything really special about them. Almost all RPGs that you play nowadays have taken from the Dragon Quest and FF series, and used many aspects of those two games, so you\'ll probably think, "ugh, how unoriginal" or something like that. But if they ever make a VIII, I\'ll be first in line to buy it.
By the way, Enix published the series, but the core group that made everything was Armored Project, Bird Studio, and HeartBeat. Bird Studio I believe is the art direction studio, headed by Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball). HeartBeat was the core programming group, I believe, and have basically have folded and stated back in February that they will be leaving the industry. Their webpage has disappeared since.

So the future of this great RPG series now probably rests in the hands of Square.... but funny, because FF and DQ used to battle it out for top RPG game of the year back in the days.. Square just dusted Enix with FFVII, and we never really heard from DQ again.

It only matters if Square Enix decides to venture into more action oriented, NON overly melodramatic, NON anime styled RPG\'s
otherwise it does nothing for me

Maybe ps2 will now get an update of Star Ocean?

Oo, oo! Japanese company doing something original and venturing out into new yet risky stuff?
Sorry, probably not in their current economic status. Which reminds me, I\'ve been having a lot of fun with FFXI lately. There\'s lots to do, and I\'m starting to find out new things about the game finally.
-
You have FFXI?!
Ohhhh... I can\'t wait for them to release it here. I wish I knew Japanese, then I would import it. The wait is killing me.
