Well, StAnZo\'s managed to get hold of it today (tuesday) and iv\'e been playing it for the last few hours.
i\'ll start off by saying that the handling has improvved a great deal from the demo on the OPSM2 demo dvd,
the steering speed has been turned down so no more oversteering, also the car acts far better than the demo.
The cockpit cam has been greatly improved aswell, the camera has been raised up slightly and been replaced slightly
forward, simlar to that of WRC1 but you can see more \'imcar\' than WRC1. the replays are a thing of beauty,
the cars act like WRC\'s, i know, iv\'e been to a few WRC stages in the UK and as a lot of people here know, i\'m a big fan
This game has come on leaps and bounds since the Demo, handling is superior, the car no longer glides across the
floor at the begining of the stage and it makes for a far better physics engine throughout as the old sliding
phenomenon whilst still and driving has been eliminated. the cars have really good \'turning circles\' and act more realistic
than any other rally game available for home console.
The super special stages are also very enjoyable. i havn\'t yet played the game in proper WRC mode as i am having
a whale of a time just time attacking. give this a look people, it\'s quite simply the best WRC game available.
More impressions as soon as i get a chance... i\'ll keep you posted..
-
Oh, BTW.. some stages i have ran, were over 9 minutes long.. you just dont understand, i thought i was ready for them,
but i wasn\'t.. it\'s very hard to keep up your concentration for 9+ minutes. but loving it all the same :0)
-
Good to hear, maybe I\'ll be buying another rally game this Gen. after all. Although I\'ll wait a little more to see what you think of it with more play ;)
-
How are the graphics in comparison to CM3? Also, how are the different weather effects?
-
Thanks..
Im getting this for sure now! :D
-
Great! So...when is the US release?
-
Racer, The Graphics are very simlar to WRC1 but there are more trees and birds that fly out of them as you blast past.
the draw distance has been improved slightly, and there\'s water spray on the cameras in wet conditions.
i quite like the effect of water splashing on the replay cam as you fire through the water splashes, its quite cool.
Overall it looks more dense than WRC1 and the cars look fantastic, especially in the replays,
Racer, you wouldnt believe how realistic they look whilst bouncing over the bumps in Cyprus, absolutly spot on.
This is where you can tell the new physics engine must be close to that of real life, the cars just bounce and bite
too realisticly. The issue of weight on the cars has been addressed and they again feel spot on.
jumping over crests feels proper. and the sound of the cars is the best yet, far surpassing WRC1 in terms of crowd horns, car samples and even the water splashes sound cool.
The cars are a lot more \'beefy\' sounding esp the Focus, Citroen and the Hyundai.
oh, and expect load times of around 5-7 seconds for each stage, regardless of stage length.
Well, you can probably tell, i love it to bits.. i\'ll be blasting through the WRC mode later on today, i\'ll have the house
to myself so it\'s gonna be put through the sound system and i\'m gonna get absorbed.
as far as a US release, i\'m not sure.. you\'ld have to check out a few websites for that info. or goto http://www.wrc.com
and head to the forums.. there you\'ll find a guy called loopyelf, he worked on WRC2 so he may be able to give you
some info that you need.

See you in the forests...

Cheers StAnZo!
Looking forward to Friday even more now. Got a day off work so the PS2 will be red hot!
-
Good to see a decent rally game for once! This certainly is work a look now.
-
If u are talking about the UK OPSM2 demo the handling and the behaviour of the car felt like a 1g weighted remote control toy car to me.
-
@Unicron.. yep, i agree.. it\'s been fixed :0)
-
Hows the speed of the cars? Can you play the same track at different times of day or with different weather?
Are the super special stages real courses?

the cars seem a little bit faster than WRC1, you cant change the times of the stages or weather in time attack,
i\'m not sure if you can do it with some of the codes that will become available throughout the game.
i\'m not a 100% sure on the super specials, they are really good, but how accurate is anyones guess.
---------------------------------------
Iv\'e played it a bit more today and i stand on my previous posts.. it\'s pure fun. far more enjoyable than CMR3
the only negative thing i can say towards WRC2 is that some of the corner calls are late.. you really have to
keep an eye on the road and abide by the calls..
-
hmmmm, kopking starts to take a intrest in this game again, so how much realler is the steering, it was way to arcadey, slippy on the 1st one and the demo for me
-
The handling has drastically changed. expect lots of realistic powerslides, hairpins and chicane cornering.
it has evolved a great deal since both WRC1 and the WRC2 demo. i noticed the improvement by the second corner.
if you look at either WRC1 or the WRC2 demo, the cars would slide on the start line whilst sitting still.. also if you
stopped halfway in the stage and put your brakes on, the car would gradually slide, it was totally wrong.
They have now eliminated that problem, it used to cause bad slides, poor turning circle and piss poor handling.
now it seems that they are calculating each wheel independantly on the floor. the change is quite staggering.
-
wow, this just made my day. Deep down, I was actually already prepearing myself for yet another disappointment. Guess I can\'t wait to get my hands on it now.. :D Thanks again. ;)
-
More Impressions...

-
I\'m glad they fixed the handling, the demo handling sucked. It was totally unplayable.
-
I wonder if the magazines reviewed the demo or the full version. It got bashed on the unrealistic handling (compared to CMR3) and the sounds of the engines. CMR3 scored 87%, while WRC2 made 80% in the review I read.
Not that I trust the scores of that review anyway... I\'d take StanZo\'s impressions over that one anyday. ;)
-
Thanks Seven, apparently there were improvments over the review code to the final store version.
this has been voiced by loopyelf on the WRC forums. (part of the dev team)
In the UK you can reserve your copy in Argos for £29.99 from their website http://www.argos.co.uk

I\'m not too impressed by WRC2... Good physics engine but I don\'t like the handling, realistic or not.
-
ok JP, i aint got no problem with that, but would you agree that it\'s a big improvement over WRC1\'s handling?
-
hmmm been so long since I tried WRC so I can\'t really tell mate. I liked the physics but I dunno, there\'s just something I can\'t put my finger on though that keeps me from really enjoying WRC2. Better than CMR3 for sure though but that doesn\'t say much hehe.
BTW, what did you think of Petter Solberg getting the silver in the championship? :D woohoo, go Petter!
-
yeah, i\'m really glad that Petter won at least one of the rounds.. he\'s definatly deserved it, i think he\'s a top bloke.
-
Stanzo,
I pick it up today, only played a few races and am loving it heaps. There is still some major freaky physics going on buts its certainly much improved over #1 and the demo.
Is the expert difficulty better? I keep doing like 20+ flips in the air when I hit something, its really dodgy and unrealistic.
-
Yeah, i\'m aware of the rather bad crash physics m8 and i\'m sorry, but it doesn\'t get any better in the harder difficulty.
that said, other than that problem, when the car is on track, it plays fine.. i suppose that you would prefer
having better driving physics than better crash physics lol. that said, i dont know why Evo Studios hasn\'t
adressed the issue.. maybee they\'ll get it right in number 3.. probably the worst thing imho about the game is that
the damage model is inconsistant,
in the top difficulty level the main differences are that you get flat tyres and theres no auto setup in the service area..
also the times are harder (obviously) to make you push that little bit harder.
Other than these couple of issues, i still think that its a very playable game.. i\'m glad that your enjoying it Racer.
oh, and got to love that sample when you boot the game up (WRC Extreme logo) that has been sampled from
a recce or shakedown.. check out the backfire.. sheer beauty.. sounds even louder when your there.
so where did you pick it up from?
-
arg... I\'m having a hard time deciding if I should get this game or not. I have limited cash reserves, and still a number of games to complete (Burnout 2, Ratchet & Clank and TimeSplitters 2). Then we\'ve got The Getaway that\'s about to ship in 2 weeks and this game already out. Also, I haven\'t checked GPC yet, so that\'s another 3 games I\'m interested in. Damnit!
-
Seven, i\'d say go out and rent it. dont go spending your money if you are unsure.. the Getaway may last you longer
and it does look rather tasty..
-
well, I\'ll probably be getting both sooner or later anyway. The problem is that we can\'t rent games that good overhere. From what I\'ve seen, it\'s "the" rallygame to get anyway. Since I\'m a big fan of the GT series, I\'m sure I\'ll enjoy this one to. :)
-
Err, I picked it up from work yesterday, still haven\'t played much as I am kinda sick at the moment and it hurts my eyes.
Its pretty good though, still havent played many of the locations. The only thing that bugs me is that all the tracks don\'t seem to have a very personal feel about them, they all kinda look the same, just different coloured dirt and trees, trees, trees.
Hopefully this could change on some other tracks.
How many tracks are there per location and can you play them at different times of day or with different weather? I have yet to play in the morning or late afternoon, all tracks are nice and sunny...
-
yeah, i was kinda dissapointed that the stages were simlar in looks to WRC1. i think they should totally change
how the stages look in number 3. there are some cracking stages in the wet.. i think argentina has some really fast
stages which are slippery. oh, the night time stages are really tough.. i dont like them much as your view is
really hampered and your having to rely on rieds pacenotes which sometimes are really late. you have to take
your time through those stages. fortunatly the night stages tend to be the shortest ones in each rally.
as for time/weather slection i dont think you can choose. ive just finished the medium difficulty mode and nothing has
opened up, apart from some extra stages and the top difficulty. there is a cheat to unlock everything and
curiosity killed the cat so i put it in and the other stuff it unlocked was the extreme cars. but that was about it.
there are some disapointing aspects of WRC2 once youv\'e spent some time with it, but its probably one of the best
dispite its flaws. i have come away from playing it sometimes feeling fed up, and then other times feeling like
i really enjoyed it. dunno what it is.. it makes you wonder if Evolution studios has used that emotion engine lol.
Another way you can look at it, is that there are some rallys even the top drivers dislike where others love.
it\'s just a personal opinion. you may also feel these mixed emotions, it must be a love/hate thang.
-
The thing that makes it hard for Evolution I suppose is that all the stages are real, and when there real, its impossible to add fun elements like mega jumps etc.
I think they did a good job, the graphics are very, very good, and its something I was pretty impressed with.
-
was very sceptical about this game after the dross that was WRC, But after reading your opinions Stanzo decided to get it on release day.
At first I hated it! the steering just felt weird using the dual shock.
The way it takes time to go from lock to lock is so different from CMR3, i was over compensating the whole time crashing consistently, the drivers eye view wasnt helping much either.
And i put it back in its case after an hour.
On saturday took it out again and set into a profesional wrc campaign.
Got 4 rallies in and ive got it sorted.
First thing you need to do is turn the power steering speed down one or two notches, and remeber to be gentle on the controller on any thing other than 90degree bends and remember to allow for the steering input time when approaching a turn.
Now it feels Like and controls more like driving.
Next tweek the car settings, as it makes a whole load of difference to the cars feel.
Once you get over the initial shock of the driving style, you can really get to grips and the exhilaration you get when you start to pull off a clean stage is extremely satisfying, especially on a 14km stage.
This game makes CMR3 feel like an arcade game now!
Agree also stanzo about that intro sound, i have my Ps2 hooked up through my dolby system and crank it up just a bit extra as i load it up, its heaven.
-
Racer, i went to the Brechfa stage last year on Rally GB 2001, and it looks very simlar in WRC2. the actual stage doesnt
resemble Brechfa in terms of geometry and scale because Brechfa is a 13.98 mile stage but in terms of the overall
look and colours that they used, it\'s just as it was when i was there.
here\'s a few images from that stage..

Also Resolven is quite simlar to that in the game..
so overall going on what i know, the stages seem quite convincing.
I\'m also happy that PS2 has got to grips with the handling and managed to get into the game
i find myself asking if theres any better Rally game on PS2 and i can honestly say that i dont think so.
it\'s the most complete package to date. and i\'m hopefull that it will bring more people out into the forests
to enjoy the atmosphere that is the W.R.C.

Go Petter..

-
Rickardsson-Brack-Radstrom
Tony Rickardsson? He races speedway, can he actually drive a rally car? ;)
Bräck races CART..
Rådström is the only rally driver.. Why not let Kenneth Eriksson race aswell?
-
Yeah Stanzo I am loving the game though I haven\'t come across any stages in the morning or afternoon, like, no sunsets or sunrises. I found this strange as I was wanting to play at Sweden with a nice orange glow coming off the snow like in V-Rally 3.
I love the lightning effect, probably the best I have seen in a racing game. How many stages are there per location?
-
Other WRC Drivers are...
Sebastian Loeb
Tomas Radstrom
Marcus Gronholm
Robbie Head (well, he used to test for Burns in the Impreza)
Jesus Puras
Well, it\'s about to start.. off i go..
Edit:.. Racer, i think that there\'s 9 stages per rally, allbeit some reversed.. go watch Eurosport.. :0)
