Title: Mucho Problemo - Verto GeForce2 PCI Lockups
Post by: SonyFan on November 26, 2002, 10:29:36 PM
I needa little help here trying to figure out what my problem is with the new graphics card I bought. I had a little cash this last paycheck (No I didn\'t) and went out to buy a decent underpowered Graphics card which would support video overlay and allow my ATI TV Wonder VE to work. I figured a Nvidia GeForce2 x200 PCI w/ 32 Ram would do the trick. Well, I bring it home, install it, an lo - it works like a charm. Sat there with my cousin watching Full Metal Jacket and taking pics of the Sarge chewin out the new recruits.

Then it locks up after about 20 mins... I can still move my mouse and audio still plays through.. but I can\'t click on anything and it looks like my CPU is goin haywire. So I shut down, restart, and get the same problem but only a lot sooner. Anymore, I can\'t even keep it running past 10 minuites tops. Thought maybe it was a problem overheating.. but that\'s not it as I\'ve installed a cooling fan on the heatsync (which was a bit hot, but now doesn\'t even come close to being warm) and still can\'t get it to keep from locking up.

I went into my System Devices and completely removed my old in-hardware SiS graphics card.. but when I re-booted the computer it reinstalled my SiS card (even tho I specified for it not to) and - the odd thing - it tried to install 2 default moniters on top of my Multisync4Ds which was already present and working perfectly. I can\'t seem to disable it, since it re-enables everytime I start up.

I took the card out, and haven\'t had a problem since.. so I know it\'s not a hiccup with the DirectX update it installed.

Right now, my best guess is that it\'s conflicting with my built-in video card and that\'s causing my problems. Hopefully one of you techheads here can help shed a little more light on my problem.

System:

Pentium II @ 300mhz
68 Mb Ram

It\'s within system specs.. PNY\'s website, reviews, and the box itself says it should run on my system.

I never expected it to run well.. but I also never expected it to not run AT ALL.

- mm, not sure off-hand. It\'s a pre-built system... but I think it\'s a 200 watter. I\'m not really drawing that much power from other components either, as I don\'t have a second harddrive, CD Rom, DVD, or anything else. The only mods over stock on this are the TV Tuner, Modem (Replaced.. so not really even drawing more power than originally intended), and the Gfx Card.

Where can I look on the Powersupply to check the wattage? All I\'m seeing are Volts and Amps right now.

there will be a sticker on the side perhaps

if it IS 200, that *may* be yer problem, especially the signs yer showing

I looked all over the powersupply and didn\'t see one. Any proggies I can download to test it and report back an analysis of what finds?

Still, I wouldn\'t think the card would pull THAT much power.  I have ran much more in it without a problem.. used to have a second 5200 RPM hdd, CD Burner, and an old Matrox Millenium graphics card in there before I cannibalized it for parts on my other computer.

If it turns out I DO have to replace the power-supply.. I\'m just gonna say f*ck it and buy a new case & mobo along with it. Then I\'ll jus get started building a new one from scratch.. and take the GeForce2 back and see about putting the money towards a GeForce4 Ti.

Find your PCI latency timer in your bios.. Set it too 12. That\'s if u have the option in your bios.

Also update your MB drivers. If your Mb is a Alimagik based board. You\'re gonna have troubles with any tv tuner card.

I\'ll check on that Latency thing, but it\'ll be a pain getting to my Bios. This is an old Compaq Presario model and I\'ll have to deal with their proprietary Bios. Meh, I\'ve been wanting to update my MoBo\'s bios anyhow just to get rid of all that shyt and have something there I can actually work with. I know it\'s not AliMagik.

Really, I still think it\'s connected to the problem I\'m having with it wanting to detect and install two new default moniters even tho I already have a perfectly fine Multisync4Ds hooked up. Hopefully in the Bios there\'s an option to turn on-board components off.. or if nothing else since I have it all stable and recently installed my Cuz\'s old burner.. I can just backup my Harddrive and do a fresh install. Maybe I\'ve got a mix-muckup of drivers installed that\'s hindering me.

Or maybe I should just leave Win98 in the dust and hope to god DosBox\'s emulation is as good as people say.
