England has worst crime rate in world
By David Bamber, Home Affairs Correspondent
(Filed: 01/12/2002)
England and Wales have the highest crime rate
among the world\'s leading economies, according to a new report by the United Nations.
The survey, which is likely to prove embarrassing to David Blunkett, the Home Secretary. shows that people are more likely to be mugged, burgled, robbed or assaulted here than in America, Germany, Russia, South Africa or any other of the world\'s 20 largest nations. Only the Dominican Republic, New Zealand and Finland have higher crime rates than England and Wales.
According to the comparison of international crime statistics produced by the UN\'s Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, England and Wales had 9,766 crimes for every 100,000 people in the year 2000. America had 8,517, South Africa 7,997, Germany 7,621 and Russia 2,022.
During the period 1998-2000, Britain went from fifth to fourth worst in the world league table. An analysis of total recorded crime figures before 1998 also suggests that England and Wales have moved sharply up the league table since Labour came to power in 1997. Crimes fell from 5.5 million in 1993 to 4.5 million in 1997. By 1999, total crimes had risen again to 5.3 million.
Last night Oliver Letwin, the shadow home secretary, said: "This does rather blow a hole in David Blunkett\'s claim that New Labour has crime under control. It is a damning picture."
The UN reports also shows that England and Wales are the second-worst places in the world for assaults, with 851 people assaulted per 100,000, and seventh for burglaries and car theft, with 1,579 burglaries per 100,000 population.
Criminologists believe that a note of caution needs to be introduced into analysis of the data, because of the different ways in which UN member countries record crimes.
A Home Office spokesman said that officials had not yet seen the report and so could not comment.
I was like  when I saw that their rate is higher than the US and SOUTH AFRICA.
What happened to all of that stuff about gun control making less crime? Oh well.
-
Blame The Getaway.
-
Less violent crime, not less crime overall.
Besides, gun control isn\'t any bigger in Canada really, and their gun related death rate isn\'t even near ours. It\'s a small, small fraction. I guess gun control isn\'t really the problem.
-
We own all, ****ing run pussys.
-
You almost seem proud of it Gohan.
I also found it funny that New Zealand, a country of 3 million people had a higher crime rate then England. Guess shagging sheep gets alittle boring after a while.
-
Maybe shagging sheep is illegal in New Zealand.Could be why their crime rate is so high.

Why would population matter? Isn\'t crime rate with respect to population?

What do I seem proud of?
How do I seem proud of it?
-
In those crimes, the victims are far more likey to survive than the victims in the US, Mexico City, Manila, Cape Town etc.
Like the article said,
Criminologists believe that a note of caution needs to be introduced into analysis of the data, because of the different ways in which UN member countries record crimes.
Violent crimes are something I\'d worry about. Muggins, burglaries and such are normal in every country. Well...except in Switzerland and Singapore (so I\'ve read).
-
don\'t funk with the Swiss, they\'ll shoot your ass.... I love the Swiss.
-
What ~is~ the crime rate in Switzerland? I betcha they\'re all commited by tourists! :D

Yeah, its in relation to population, but the smaller the population the worse it seems.
If New Zealand only has a pop of 3 million, yet its got one of the highest crime rates it sounds bad as apposed to somewhere like the USA with a pop of like 288 million with a lower crime rate.
-
^^^Well, it is bad. If New Zealand has a higher crime rate than the US and England that does not mean that NZ isn\'t that bad because they have a smaller population. It pretty much means that they are worse. I don\'t see how it isn\'t bad.
It pretty much means that for every 100 thousand people, this many crimes were commited.

It doesn\'t say that in the article so could you come with some proof to back that up?

Maybe you missed the smilie face AND the "j/k".
How about you read something and see that it is sarcastic and a joke before you get all proud and make a jackass out of yourself.
Personally, I just find it funny that Brits constantly say that they have less crime because they have strict gun laws when in fact they have the most crime(among countries with 20 million or more people).
-
The crime rate in the UK is high because criminals don\'t go to jail! The get told they are a naughty boy and let off to commit further crimes. The UK justice system sucks!!!!!!!

FFS the US has more gun killings per year than most countries put together....
:D
Second amendment = Thinly disguised “licence to kill”
i mean even at K-mart they used to sell AP ammo to kids now How Dum is that
is there any wonder why you lot keep blowing people away..... :boom:
on a serious note

I have no proof but I can tell you first hand that the US cities are one of the worst as far as murder compared to European cities.

Like 00seven already said, you don\'t need guns to mug people. Grab the guy from behind with a choke hold and drag him backwards while his pals grab the victim\'s wallet and Rolex watch.
-
Does anyone else believe in \'an eye for an eye\'?
Or am I just a psycho?!

You\'re a psycho.
I can\'t say I\'m for capital punishment either*. Too many innocent people in the prisons. :crap:
The only exception should be when there\'s absolutely no doubt he or she did it (it being a horrible, horrible crime).
But then again - do you put people in prison because of vengeance, or because you want to keep them out from society?
-
No, I mean literally an eye for an eye.
Someone commits a crime and the same crime comes back on them, assault, rape, theft,...................murder.
It\'d certainly help with the rape problem over here at the moment!!
-
But what happens to the guy who is giving the "eye for an eye" to the one originally guilty of committing the offense, shouldn\'t the same thing be done to him too? After all, if it is a crime for one person to do it, then it\'s also a crime for it to be done in retalliation.
Before we know where we are, we will ALL be giving an eye for an eye.
-
The guy doing the punishing has to wear a black hood like the dribbling executioner in Robin Hood : Prince Of Thieves!
Or the lethal injection/old sparky method could be used, three buttons, only one wired up and the man who wired it up is not around to see who actually set off the machine. I\'m sure the same principle could be applied to other forms of punishment.
-
probably all the refugees etc we get over here do add to this al a lot
-
I don\'t support the 2nd amendment. I just thought it was ironic.

it would only be ironic if us Brits had a higher gun death rate than the US what with our Strict Gun Controls....
but we don\'t
and quite frankly i don\'t see any need in changing our stance on Guns.
ok we do have Gun related deaths but they are down to the Blackmarket and "gang Warfare"
in paticular "yardie" gang violence in areas of England (London Esp)
but still the numbers are at a far smaller fraction to US "standards"
again most Crimes are reported are
Muggings
GTA
and Crimes related to Drink and Drugs
-
In a perfect world, sharks would have lasers attached to their heads and guns would be made of chocolate. No one can say no to chocolate. Not even Brits. Every law would require at least 4 guns per household. On Haloween, kids would shoot each other with flavory goodness. I know I\'m asking for too much perfection; but can\'t a guy just dream?

An hour? No. A month? Easily. But you don\'t get shot in NY unless you\'re doing something wrong to begin with. Well, unless it\'s by the police...
