Ok, I dont want the fanboys jumping all over this one, but after christmas I will have enough cash to purchase a second console to accompany my ps2. Based on games that are out now, and the releases of the future, where would my money be best spent? I have owned an xbox and gc in the past, but couldnt afford to keep them. I am most into sport, fps and \'espionage\' type games. I\'m currently leaning towards the xbox, mainly because of Halo 2, but I realise thats not for a while yet. Only constructive suggestions please, I dont want anyone to start slating anything!!!
EDIT: What is the DVD playback like on the xbox? Its terrible on my ps2, sound and picture out of sync. I refuse to buy a DVD player until recordale DVD players drop in price because I\'m going to wait for one of those.

Well, your game category leanings seem to point more in the direction of the X-Box. It seems to be the stronger FPS and \'espionage\' game system.
For Gamecube, you would probably want to check out Metroid, which is a great FPS type game, and better than Halo in my personal opinion. There are a lot of great games for GC in other genres than those you listed, and I think it is the stronger console overall, but if you really wanna stick to the three types you listed though, X-Box is probably the smarter choice. That is the direction they are leaning in, and focusing on.
By the way, when you read this, take in mind that I am, if anything, a Nintendo fanboy.

" \'espionage\' type games."
No offense, but you seem to have made up your mind already. I can\'t think of any espionage games on the gamecube.
In my personal opinion if you had an xbox before, and it was not worth keeping. I doubt it would be worth keeping now.The XBOX has only added one A list title since launch of last year. So I think the question should be is splinter cell worth a console purchase. I don\'t know of any A exclusive titles the XBOX will be adding that are not going to be out on the other consoles for quite some time.
I own all 3 consoles, and my choice between the xbox and GC would be the GC without a doubt.

I\'m a complete sports whore, and I opted for the Xbox. It seems as though the Box has better graphics on pretty much every sports title. It also has quite a few good fps, and Clancy has been giving some good espinoge games to the X.
The GC is a great console, but it seems as though the Xbox suits your needs better.
-
Based on what you want, I\'d say Xbox all the way. GCN is lacking in sports (in comparison to Xbox) and Xbox has more FPS\'s and at least 2 top-notch espionage games. (Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance, Splinter Cell)
Personally, I\'d push for the GCN (my preference) but I also own the Xbox and it\'s worked out well.

Im going to talk about the things fanboys seem too attack on the other consoles. Such as GC\'s kiddiness, PS2\'s graphics and X-Boxes well theres quite a few things there.
First up is gamecube. Most fanboys talk about how kiddie Nintendo is. But if you think about it even if they were "kiddie" which they arent why did people attack that? As a serious gamer I can see were your upset. But put yourself in Nintendo\'s shoes. Satisfy the teens or satisfy the whole family? They stick with mature games and they lose the kids. But whats so kiddie about mario games? zelda games? and so on? Everyone can enjoy those. Sure the pokemon sucked but they attracted the kids. And there were already plenty of great games that all ages could enjoy. Gc is really getting the attention of mautre gamers now and hopefully those ignorant people will stop their whinning about "kiddie games".
Next is X-box, I personally dont own or plan on owning a X-Box. Alot of people on this forums over do the X-Box bashing. It may not be the best selling system especially in Japan but it is selling pretty well in the US (I think, havent seen sales in a while). And the graphics are great and they put the graphics with some pretty good games and got great games. Such as Munch, Splinter cell and others that I dont know of...(would be able to write more if I had one.
Last is PS2, I personally think that the PS2 has the worst graphics of the 3 systems. I see alot of people in the main forums saying that the screens of some of the PS2 games are awsome while I see them as horrible. Really after seeing how some games look I dont know when there will be a game on the PS2 that will make me say wow.But than the fanboys say the graphics suck.....and their point is? So what graphics arent as good as other systems? Those fanboys obviously dont know what a good game it. If they argue graphics they\'re idiots. Graphics dont mean crap. FFVII possible one of the best games of all time doesnt even have good graphics, but it\'s the story and gameplay ( as well as some nice music) that makes a game great.

Actually, the core Pokemon titles (Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, etc) are some of the finest handheld games ever made.. they don\'t really "suck". The oversaturation of Pokemon (and many of the N64 spinoffs) was somewhat lame, but the original games on which the phenomenon was based were revolutionary, quality games.
-
I only own an Xbox and have only played the others for less than an hour combined, so I have little buisness steering you toward 1 system or another, however, I\'ve not seen anyone address your question about the DVD playback.
I think the playback is pretty good.
I understand that it\'s not as good as a "DVD Player" but since I bought my Xbox, I have not felt the need to go get a real DVD player even though they are getting real cheap.
If you need your DVD player to play MP3s, VCDs and all the other goodies that actual DVD players can, then keep in mind that Xbox won\'t do that. (but I\'m sure you already know that.)
-
I own both and by leaps and bounds its X-Box. I like the Cube but there is just not enough to play on it. X- box is just a far superior machine.

Exactly. I think it\'s a shame the way they overmarketed the game, and directed it at such a young audience. It could have easily become one of the classic game series, along with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc. for Nintendo. Now, I think it will just be look at as a fad.

Shockwaves: Yeppers.
\'Course, without Pokemon.. Nintendo might not be here today. They made a boatload of money on the franchise.

Please, please explain to me how metroid is better than Halo.
-
I\'m still waiting for someone to explain how either one of them are good games.....
:D
-
You\'ll be waiting a long time... ;) They are most overrated GOTY for their respective years IMO.
Oh, of the listed genres, Xbox wins hands down. I would break into a house and steal both systems from a little kid myself though... assuming I didn\'t already have them all.
-
It all depends on what type of games you are looking to purchase. There are many great games for both systems IMO. From what i have seen and played, Xbox has the better graphics and framerates, but the 2 systems are so close in comparison, it really doesnt matter. I would have to go with a GC myself, just because i love PSO on the DC and i have always wanted to play Metroid Prime.

I dont think there is one person on this planet who can explain to you how good Metroid his.

I enjoyed playing it more. Considering I said in my personal opinion, I don\'t need to say any more than that to justify it. I also don\'t feel like going into why I think it is better overall, so you can live with that for now.
-
get an Xbox there are some bigtime advantages having a built in harddrive
There are a few RPG\'s due out in 2003 that should raise the bar for console RPG\'s some
sports games are better on Xbox as well because of superior sound, graphics and the harddrive
game selection is a little weak overall, but its getting better, and there are some games on the horizon
plus games made for all 3 systems usually are better on Xbox as well

Halo kicked ass
I thought it was a excellent console FPS
I only goofed with metroid for a little while... in that time I wasn\'t overly impressed and I had enough to determine the GC controller is the largest piece of crap going
-
yeah halo was good cause it was one of the first games to use one joystik for looking around and 1 for moving. those games have been out for pc for a while,i.e. half-life, rainbow 6. but it turned out good on a console too.
-
Halo is really overrated
Haven\'t tried Metroid Prime but from all the movies and pictures I\'ve seen it looks to be overrated too
-
Metroid has more to it and comes of as a more satisfying experience, IMO.
Halo is the same old objective level after level...nothing memorable, IMO.
Metroid has variety of gameplay around every corner.
I guess it depends what you\'re looking for in a FPS...do you like it quick and dirty, or well paced and all the right moves?
The controller is not a problem
-
If you actually sit down with the GCN controller for more than an hour, you\'ll get used to it..
-
I still don\'t like the GameCube controller.. and I hate the fact that the D-Pad has been turned into nothing more than a "side" button that you use to cycle through weapons and inventory items. What do you expect developers to do tho.. it\'s useless for just about everything else.
However.. I must say that my initial impressions of the NGC Keyboard were way off base. Sure it\'s small.. very small.. but that\'s just the KB part. The actual controller section is very well built and actually feels sturdier and more well constructed than the "Offical" NGC pads. Having your hands farther apart from either side of the controller isn\'t disorienting at all, and is actually very very comfortable. So much so that I\'m not just using my KB for PSO.. but for every game.
