Marvel is coming out with an openely gay comic book character. Nothing wrong with being gay, but this is going a bit over board. I know this will make Vapor happy :p
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Marvel Comics plans to break new ground in the comic book industry by introducing the first openly gay title character in a comic book.
The character will appear in a revival of the 1950s title, "The Rawhide Kid." Marvel expects a February debut.
The new series pairs the original artist, John Severin, now 86, with Ron Zimmerman, a writer for the "Howard Stern Show."
The Rawhide Kid has been a Marvel character since the 1950s both as a main and a secondary character. However, it was not until Zimmerman approached Marvel with his idea of a homosexual Rawhide Kid that sexuality was mentioned in the discussion of the character.
Comics are aimed at kids mostly and this is just offensive. Sorry if anyone disagrees.
Although shy with girls, the original Rawhide Kid was not intended to be gay. The new version uses double entendres and euphemisms to reveal his homosexuality without saying anything explicitly. Based on a blurb on Marvel\'s Web site, the tone may be campy.
In a bubble in the first edition of the series, Rawhide Kid comments about the Lone Ranger: "I think that mask and the powder blue outfit are fantastic. I can certainly see why the Indian follows him around."
Brian Reinert, Marvel\'s public relations officer, said that Marvel has always been "interested in tapping into stories that are relevant today." He expects the reactions to this comic to vary.
Although many readers will accept the new sexuality of the Marvel hero, Reinert expects possible negative responses from people who don\'t accept homosexuality and readers who do not want to see a change in their beloved character.
"When you tackle these issues it will always push buttons," he said.
Marvel is planning six stories over the next six months. After looking at the response to those issues they will decide whether to continue production and whether they would be interested in more series with gay title characters.
Although Rawhide Kid is the first gay title character, Marvel does have several existing gay characters, such as North Star of the "X-Men" comic book series.
The Rawhide Kid series, beginning with the first edition "Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather," will run about 22 pages and have a suggested retail price of $2.95

For a long time, Batman and Robin was thought by southern Bible thumpers to be an allegory of Man/boy lovers.
-
I know its one thing to suspect - but this is overtly open. I wonder why Marvel hasn\'t come out with a lesbian comic book character - that surely would have made them more money. ;)
-
I\'d buy the Lesbian Wonderwoman rescuing a helpless Catwoman in a mud bath. :p
-
Yes I would too! I know its hypocritical, but thats life. :)
-
What about Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street, they shared a bed:eek:

How is it going a bit over board. it\'s about time they did do this. Start breaking barriers down.

Who really cares if he\'s gay or not? Heterosexuals don\'t make a big deal about being heterosexuals. Why do they have to make a hoopla about him being gay?
Where he sticks his dingaling is not the....uh...point. He\'s a super hero! So be a super hero!
If we wanted to see super heros acting gay, then we\'ll watch "THE AMBIGUOUSLY GAY DUO!".
There. I\'ve said my peace.
Proud to be a heterosexual! Whoopdeedoo.
-
I think the point is that they make a big deal about it. You know the super hero will be "acting gay", which will only reinforce the stereotypes people already have.
-
That would be worse than not having a gay character.
Gman, its not about making a big deal to be gay and the likes. People appreciate to be accomodated. Like spanish/latin individuals like to have spanish /latin programming on TV. Comics in espanol..etc..
People want things they can relate to.
-
I\'m not gay!
But I\'m buying this comic.
-
Don\'t they already have the Ambiguously Gay Duo??? No see my thing is that it will only enforce stereotypes even more as someone said earlier, can\'t remember who it was though.
-
It was the ultra sexy guy with the blue user name.

The question is - What is homosexuality? It refers to sexual preferences. How homosexuals act are as varied as heterosexuals. So how will they present this hero? Effeminate? Macho? Sensitive? Funny? There are a lot of guys that act effeminate but aren\'t gay. There are a lot of gays who act as macho as any heterosexual.
So how will homosexuals relate to this guy since they act as normal as anyone else, gay or not?
In my opinion, it\'s a moot point. Just let the guy be a hero. If they want to say "He\'s a hero, and by the way....he\'s gay." What message are they trying to convey?
I think most people will say "So what\'s the big deal if he is or not?"
There\'s this double standard I don\'t like. White people can\'t have "White Pride" written on their shirts. But minority groups can. This comic book hero being touted as Gay Super Hero is another double standard.
I have gay friends like anyone else. I also have friends who are Jewish, Arabic, Asians, Africans and Europeans. I don\'t go around introducing them as "This is Mike, he\'s gay."
You probably would say to me, "So?"
-
"The Ambiguously Gay Duo,
They are taking on evil, come what may, They are fighting all crime to save the day. They\'re extremely close in an ambiguous way! They\'re ambiguously gay. "
That is one of the funniest things on Saturday Night live... ever. I dont really care for homosexuals, I dont really like/dislike them. I\'m neutral. If you wanna go that way- go ahead, just leave me alone and don\'t try for me. Just leave me alone, or dont act gay around me.

Like I said, it\'s nice to have something for ALL people to be able to identify with when they are the minority. Hence no "white power" shirts without reprecussion and this gay comic.
The reason it has to be spoken that said character is gay is b/c ppl would more than likely assume the character is straight unless it was painfully obvious. Plus Im sure someone also wants to piss off the bible thumpers and homophobes out there as well.

Luckee, you talk about freedom for all, yet you consistantly bash conservatives on this board. You come across as being all for freedom of speech as long as it isn\'t a conservative who is speaking. Maybe some of us don\'t like the gay lifestyle being forced upon our society as being ok. Gay people as a whole don\'t bother me as long as they keep it in the privacy of their own home. This agenda of tolerance that is being waged by the liberal part of our society is really sickening. For the record, I am not religious at all, but I do find your generalization that people are bible thumpers if they believe homosexuality to be wrong and offensive.
In closing, I am sure I will be labeled as intolerant or god forbid, a bigot for this post.

Talk about twisting things. No one is taking any freedoms away from you by having gay comics on the market.
Do you keep your heterosexuality behind private doors only? Didnt think so..nuff said.
Please dont speak about bashing others, ok kettle?
Who cares if some of you dont like it. You are not being forced to be with another male nor are you being forced to read said comment. Hell, no one even forced you to post about it.
Homosexuality being forced upon society??? Damn, you are homophobic arent you?
As for the generalization..it wasnt really one if you re-read now was it? Here IS one though. Typically, those that are into religion enough to look at homosexuality as wrong and offensive are usually deep into religion and are also bible thumpers. Is that better for ya?

Gay Double Acts throughout history
Sherlock & Dr Watson
Biggles & Ginger
Batman & Robin
Sigfred & Roy
Vapour Snake & Ashford
ooseven & Samwise
And may it long continue to do so

Before anyone asks, I\'m not gay so you\'re out of luck.
But what do all the gay people think when hetrosexuals try to \'accommodate\' them. If it was me I\'d feel pretty pissed at the constant assumptions being thrown around, all those stereotypes just aren\'t very accurate for the whole gay populace.
Quote from GmanJoe
There are a lot of guys that act effeminate but aren\'t gay. There are a lot of gays who act as macho as any heterosexual.
My solution, if gay people want specific gay icons then gay people should create them themselves.
-
First off, for demographics alone, the guy who suggested a lesbian superhero was absolutely right. It\'s young boys who read comic books, and that would have catered right to them. This Rawhide idea is probably going to flop.
Most boys simply won\'t find stories about Rawhide and his partner compelling. The reason I think it\'s "wrong" is because it\'s not entertaining.
And if you absolutely have to make a gay man superhero just for the sake of being different, you better sure as hell have a good, entertaining story to overshadow it. And luckily Marvel is handling this, so that ought to be the case.
Heh, but screw that, let\'s have DC out with the lesbian issue and maybe I\'ll pick one up.... You know, accidentally.

Uh where did I bash you? I simply asked you not to attack people who have the opposite opinion. As for insults... you say I am homophobic... that would imply I fear homosexuals. I find it disgusting, but it doesn\'t mean I fear them. Once again you let the insults fly, just because someone disagrees with your "narrowminded" view. Yes, some could say my view is narrowminded as well, I guess it depends on what side of the fence you are sitting on. Lets see if you can reply without an insult or any sarcastic remark - just reply to topic of my post which is...
The fact remains that in this country homosexuality is frowned upon. Should they be discriminated against? No I don\'t think they should, but they shouldn\'t have to force their agenda or beliefs on this society either. They teach that homosexuality is ok in public schools so yes they are asserting their agenda on society. When my son comes home one day and says his teacher says that having two mommies or two daddies is normal, well I have to disagree. Don\'t try and tell me that isn\'t forcing an opinion on someone, especially when it comes to a 10 year old. The majority don\'t want it and as far as I know this is still a democracy.

This is getting old and you are really reaching now.
I didnt say you bashed me. I didnt "attack" anyone with an opposite opinion.
Calling you homophobic is NOT an insult. I feel you are to a degree. Real simple, not a insult though. Try again.
Narrowminded? Actually those not willing to accept what is not the "norm" are typically the narrowminded ones.
Im sarcastic by nature, but I RARELY insult ppl without being insulted first. I know you want me to go first. Like I said in another thread, you wanna get OT in a thread..PM me.
Now to get back on topic. Being hetero isnt normal to some, whats your point? It\'s all in how one person looks at it. Just b/c things are available or even advertised doesnt mean it is being forced upon the public. Like I said, dont pick it up when its out, dont have yor children read them, etc...etc..etc.
The majority didnt want women and minorities to have certain rights either and look how that sits now. Being a democracy is exactly the point. The ability to have what you want, turn out what you dont and speak your voice either way.
