Title: Worth getting Nintendo
Post by: clowd on December 13, 2002, 03:02:32 PM
Is it worth getting a gamecube if the only game you like on it is mario?  Is mario good enough?

Oh,  so its not worth getting.  Other good titles?  Like Zelda?  One  of the things holdimng me back from gettingone is that the only good game I see it has is Mario.  I dont really like all the mario parties and other mario spinoffs.

For me, Mario Sunshine was good but didn\'t live up to the name.

If you want just one title, maybe look at Animal Crossing.  It\'s not intense, it\'s laid back, but it\'s pretty addicting.

If that\'s too tame for you, maybe give a look to Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, or Resident Evil 0.

And get ready, because Zelda is due in March and if you preorder it they throw in an upgraded Cube version of Ocarina of Time.  Guess what game I plunked ten dollars down on today? ;]

I didn\'t know it was upgraded?  Or are you referring to the Ura expansion?

Something tells me that Clowd won\'t be interested in Zelda.... kidie!!1

Depending on the type of games you like, SMS could be considered the best game you play this year.

It\'s an awesome platformer. Not quite as revolutionary (or all-around good) as SM64 was back in 1996, but definitely a must-buy title if you own a GCN IMHO. However, IMO.. it\'s not the best game on the system.

Grab a platinum GCN with Metroid Prime and say goodbye to your social life for a week.. ;)

BTW, there are a pile of good-great-AAA games on GCN now. The aforementioned SMS, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Star Fox Adventures, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Monkey Ball 1&2, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 1&0, Wave Race: Blue Storm, Mario Party 4 and much much more.. nevermind the storm of games coming next year. (among them the 4th "perfect" game to date according to Famitsu, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker)

I\'ve a DVD demo and the game looks very funny. Anyway there are or there will be games much better than Sunshine... look at metroid, zelda, starfox adventures or the new FF :o

Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime are both better choices than Mario Sunshine. Although (mario) is a great game, ED and MP superior. Smash Bros might also be too. Very underrated. That game is jammed pack with multiplayer options, 300+ trophies to collect, around 15-20 unlockable characters, etc.

RE1 and RE:0 are good choices, if you can bare the terribly outdated controls, slow gameplay, and weak storyline. Star Fox is allright, though sometimes you\'re be sick of collecting items.

Upgraded version of OoT? Explain! Details! A.S.AP!

I\'m pretty sure he\'s referring strictly to the Ura add-on that was never released in the U.S.  Because, AFAIK, OoT was not upgraded in any way, shape or form.  :)

Updated graphics probably.

And the whole Ura Zelda thing is pretty simple. Its exactly the same as Oot, but the dungeons are different. I don\'t know how much different, but they won\'t be exactly the same as the ones in Oot. I\'ve heard they\'re completely different but I don\'t know.

I\'ve heard about Ura - I just want details on this OoT Cube version. Makes me want to go pre-order Zelda tommorw.

No, the graphics are exactly the same.  The only difference is that they are apparently a little "cleaner" in the GCN version.

And I think the Ura dungeons are the same as in OoT.

That qualifies as upgraded...

Well you think wrong.

However, in Ura\'s dungeons, items as well as enemies are placed differently, and puzzles are slightly different.

Ow3ned.

Yea, people that have played OOT side by side with its Cube version say there are differences.  But they are just subtle enhancements, nothing like the famous Spaceworld footage.

And I haven\'t been keeping up on it, so I don\'t know if Ura Zelda is thrown into the deal here in the States, but I certainly hope so.

Ura will be a part of the deal I\'m sure.  However, if they went through the trouble of cleaning up the graphics, why couldn\'t they at least change the interface?  It\'s pretty horrible playing a game on the cube using the cube controller while the game\'s options and display shows it as the yellow C buttons and whatnot.  Pretty poor if you ask me.

Adan: SFA = way better than SMS? Man, are you part of the minority.. :)

SFA is like the only Nintendo-published GCN game that I have that I haven\'t beaten. (other than Animal Crossing)

It\'s just so boring. It\'s like Zelda, but not at all evolutionary with dull, dull combat. Have you played it?

But it was gorgeous...boy was it gorgeous (SFA)...

Well, I guess you have me on a technicality, but I\'m gonna tie this into my other point..

Because I don\'t believe they intentially made any changed to the game, the cleaner look comes merely from actually being emulated on the GCN, it\'s probably renderred at a higher resolution.

But they\'re still the same dungeons, just with enemies placed differently, and slightly different puzzles?

Heh, don\'t get me wrong.. I think SFA is a good game. Good, not great. It has its high points..

There are a lot of low points, though. Like the combat, which is laughable.

It\'s not as good as SMS, and doesn\'t approach Metroid Prime in quality IMHO.

Bob, they remixed OOT for Ura.  Different locations for items, enemies, etc, and different dungeon order.

There\'s also supposedly a new dungeon or two, but the last review I read, the person hadn\'t found one yet.

I\'ve gotten back to playing SFA a little bit, and it\'s not quite as bad as I remember from last month.

I\'d say that it\'s worth renting at least. The gameplay has its shortcomings, but it does enough well.

SMS and MP are still better IMO. (and in some cases, much better)

Post by: Mr. Kennedy on December 18, 2002, 04:09:47 AM
is SFA still worth a buy?
Title: Worth getting Nintendo
Post by: Blade on December 18, 2002, 07:25:44 AM
Buy? Maybe.. it\'s got a good ~20~ hours of gameplay. The problem is that the gameplay is bland at times.

I\'d have to say that SFA is a bad way for Rare to go out as a Nintendo 2nd-party.

If I were you, I\'d rent first.. because there isn\'t much replay value here and you might not like the game.

Personally, I loved SFA, but I know a lot of people who didn\'t.  Might be good to play it first.

Alright, abut the Ura thing, I got a couple of questions.

1. When can I reserve Wind Waker, and, in turn, get the Ura Disc?
2. Are there certain stores where you have to reserve it, or does this apply with anywhere that you reserve it?

Once those are answered, I don\'t care if I can get it or not, I\'ll just reserve it :)

See Yuz.

ROL Jamas:

1. Anytime, from what I understand. For example, I pre-ordered this past March.. and I\'m likely getting the disc.

2. Probably everywhere that you reserve it. Heck, there\'s a small chance that they\'ll give it away with every copy.

Yea Jamas, it\'s a Nintendo promotion so it\'s good at more than one store, but I\'m not positive about the time frame.

The Electronics Boutique I reserved mine at a week ago promised me the game though, so if you want a store that\'s already started the promotion for sure, there it is.
