(Tokyo)- In an announcement early this morning, Nintendo and Sony executives announced that they had come to a legal agreement over the rights to the name \'Playstation\'. The name, which was originaly given to a joint-venture CD rom based add-on for the Super Nintendo, was technically, a joint-owned copyright. Sony has agreed to pay Nintendo 10% of all past and future proceeds made off of the name. This ammounts to a whopping 2.3 billion USD in back-payments. Nintendo will allow Sony to pay the money back in installments instead of a lump sum over the next 20 years. However, Nintendo has plans for their new found source of income. They will immidietly finance a new game studio called \'The Artists Group\' which will feature members of Sega, Nintendo, Namco, Capcom, Konami, Tecmo, Square-Enix and more to collaborate on projects for Nintendo systems, and exchange copyrighted properties. The first projects announced out of this new studio are a new RPG using various gaming icons as the central charachters, a new Smash Brothers game, featuring mascots from accross the companies, including Pacman, Megaman, Sonic, Mario and more, as well as a new Sega-AM2 developed racing game that will also feature multiple icons from the various companies. The final collaboration is the recently announced Viewtifull Joe from Capcom stuidios. Nintendo has also promised that completely original more collaborations between studios will take place in the future, but for now, they will be focusing on quality content showcasing the newfound bond between the various development houses. Contrary to internet rumors however, Nintendo has not as of yet purchased any software developers, and as such, all members of the Artists Group will be allowed to explore development on other systems of their own accord. More as it develops. "

I dunno how good a source consoletalk is, but if it true, its pretty big. And I guess the next consol will not be called playstation 3 in this case, becasue then 10 % of the profit will go to nintendo.....oh well....let see how this turns out
-
already in CD
plus its still to be confirmed.
-
I still think it belongs in this forum, since it does (if its true) have a big impact on the playstation

2.3 Billion over 20 years ?
Big Impact ?
do the math , even if it is true that figure is nothing compaired tothe amount of money Sony makes from the Playstation series (PSX & PS2).
-
just 2.3 billion?
m$ spent that alone on just advertising xbox live this year
-
Its a hoax.. Some guy at a forum made it up.
The whole megashit thingy is made up.
-
yaa. I figured consol talk wasn\'t much of a source but i posted it anyway. I abit feel stupid for not verifying this elsewhere before posting. I tried to verify this from nintendo\'s site but there is nothing about it...
sorry folks

I already replied in console-debate - someone should merge the two threads:
where\'s the official PR statement? I can\'t find not one, either from Nintendo or Sony. Not even the big sites have this news...
This is supposed to be big isn\'t it? Call me what ever you want, but until I see other big sites with this info or official PR statements, then I will remain sceptical.
At that, I think 2.3 billion is too much. The whole industry is ment to worth $ 20 billion, yet Sony is paying 10% which == 2.3 billion? Either the industry has grown much larger, or this is an indication that Sony owns bloddy much of it.
Another thing that is missing are the details. I can\'t quite believe that after over 8 years, another company has the right to reclaim a once joint-owned copyright. Either Sony is being extremely nice to Nintendo or I don\'t know. Too many unanswered questions if you ask me...

i mentioned this over on the UK offical Playstation 2 site and it was dismissed.
looks like they were not too happy with this site.

I hate to agree with Seven - but if this was true an offical PR statement would of been out A.S.A.P.

not the news but what if Sony or Nintendo were upset at this site and though we were connected, which we are not.

hmm... it does make things less interesting when people tend to agree with eachother, isn\'t it? :(
ooseven,
what exactly did you mean with the UK official PS2 site? Did they post something about this, or were you the one that informed them?
