Title: Do you dream about popularity and succession?
Post by: Darth Joyda on January 17, 2003, 07:52:37 AM
My long-time fantasy has been to success in acting. I can not help but to think how low my chances are for international success - given that I am a Finn. Even gaining fame here in Finland is hard, mainly due to the fact that there are about 1000 young males and females fantasizing the same dream every year. Not much compared to your american standards, but enough to cut my chances to a mere 1,7-2%. And that only to get into the praised Acting Academy of Helsinki, Finland.

My parents try to encourage me - many have said that I own stage-charisma. But I just don\'t believe in my own skills. It is so hard to critisize something I can not see - \'thus I just don\'t know how I act. I would have better chances to get myself into the Art Academy of Helsinki, though, but acting still surpasses drawing.

So, do you dream about popularity and succession, or are you happy with what you have got?

Darth - its success not succession.  ;)  Many years ago I dreamt I would be doing something different than what I am doing now, but really I can\'t complain.

Man, You need to keep that dream going.  That\'s what drives people.  That and competition.  Without these things, many of us wouldn\'t go very far in life.  Take my situation for an example.  Im going to school right now for computer animation.  In the las year, my output has been much better because Im always trying to be better then the next guy.  Im in competition with everyone.  Not to mention myself.  Always strive to be better then what you are though.  Don\'t get arogant though.  That will make you lazy.

I like what I do right now but as with most I wish I could have become a circus performer. I loved the flying trapeze act but my fear of heights eliminated that as a prospective future. As I got older I wanted to get into being a disc jockey but as to no avail I found out what the earn yearly and that was enough to make me desire something else. When I came to the realization that I was going to be a programmer with a wife and child I came to grips with reality and decided that this will be as good as it gets. I guess the only other desire I can think of would be to work for a video game magazine as a photographer. I feel that I possess the ability to see great pics. I just wouldn’t know how to get my start.

I quess you are right. I will keep my fantasies... But at the same time I am afraid of losing them. One failure, one mis-step, and I am off the track.

I heard Finland is beautiful I hope to visit there one day.

Your dream sound fantastic keep going never give up I know I will see you in some major motion pic one day.  Sadly I love acting out plays in the schools drama club and even though they say I am really good I do not want to become an actress the reason is show business a shallow business those who become famous tend to lose themselves in it and become as shallow as the industry.  Those who were born into stardom end up like this most of the time I think its great that you want success and you have a dream, but it will never happen if you do not believe you can do it instead of looking at odds have a little faith and get out there be known even if you fail realize its a barrier and break through it if you believe it you can do it a close friend told me that and I believe it.  My dream is to become a writer/director and I like writing fantasy\'s and fairytales but with moves like lord of the rings and Harry potter I began to question myself if any of my writing was any good I still do but I hang on to that hope that someone will see and feel what I feel in my stories I have already got some of my poetry published I think I am off to a pretty good start.  Lets make a deal you become a big star and I will write a blockbuster hit and we will work on a project together and take the movie industry by storm :)

OK, This may come off bad. Now, I don\'t want to be rude, so I\'m going to make the assumption that you can take some constructive criticism.  You need to really work on your grammer if you want to become a famous writer.  I know that I\'m bad too sometimes, but you have so many run on\'s  I don\'t know where some sentences end, and others begin.

I don\'t dream of becoming famous at all. I get stage fright. Just walking in front of my class makes me feel funny.

Of course I dream of success though. I want to be able to have a stable life financially when I get older, but I don\'t want to be famous doing it.

Darth Joyda,

I would say keep your dream to become an actor and do what ever you have to do to succeed.

You still have to work hard to have something to fall back on but you don\'t want to say, I had a dream and I never followed through.

That\'s what I kind of did with music. Growing up, going to school, I had one thing on my mind and that was to be in a successful band. I let the dream slip and now I kick myself for not following through on my dream.

Is there room for thirty something rock and rollers? I don\'t know but I am going to have fun trying.

You have to sit up before you can crawl, you have to crawl before you can stand, you have to stand before you can walk,  you have to walk before you can run. Basicly what I am saying is that your dreams are reachable, it is how hard you are willing to work for them. Be the bigger hardass so to say.

Thanks, Tigress :) Finland is a nice place to live - but the winters are long and often very boring ;) I am also dreaming about getting rich and moving to a warmer country...

Tigress, you bring a very valid point into the discussion. Media turns people from honest persons to ego-centric cash-cows. I don\'t want to sound self-centered here, but some have called me multi-talented. I can draw better than most ( some claim they have never seen someone as good as me... but they go too far ), I have been called a \'very promising, young actor\', I used to be the best pianist of our music-insitute and I am a good speaker...

Oh God... That was very selfish of me... I apologize :)

But, the thing is, I lack self-confidence. Unconciously I know that I have great chances - for I feel as if I was born to become an actor. I am not frightened to be on the spotlight, in the centre of the stage, giving a monologue to a two-hundred-headed crowd - I am not afraid to improvise and do stand-up-comedy to school-audiences - but I always undertreat myself. I only critisize my actions and never praise them. Some say it is better not to grow too self-centered, and I agree. But a healthy dose of self-confidence is only good to oneself. Heck, all the praise I gave in this thread to myself... I haven\'t praised myself like that in ages. I never do that in real life. Ah well...

Tigress, hold onto your dream yourself. There was nothing wrong in your spelling. You should only use more dots and \',\' -marks to make your text more easily readable. Otherwise, it\'s all good :) And you seem very honest... Hopefully you stick around despite the bad treatment and wrong accusations. We need nice, kind-hearted members like you - believe me :)

Wise words, Ace. Thank you.

my spelling is usely bad because I am usually in a rush being in school in all oh and don\'t worry pointing out your strong points is not being selfish if it boosts your confidence then go ahead and toot your own horn. I am glad there are some serious people here as well as clowns its balanced that way.  you have to have idiots and braniacs. the idiots remind the smart ones to laugh and the smart ones remind the idiots to  think 8D

Writers tend to like paragraphs. If you\'d like to earn a living by writing, you better start liking the enter key, or u won\'t make it. :) Remember children, quality not quantity.

You should keep your acting dream alive, Darth.

My drama teacher in high-school (very experienced and respected) said that I was the most "naturally talented" actor she had seen in her 20 years of teaching.  But when it actually came to auditioning to get into the schools, my lack of confidence meant I not only did poorly in the interviews, but screwed up my lines in the audition.  (Not to mention the fact that I\'m better at interacting and adlibbing, rather than just doing a stupid 2 minute monologue  )

Then, I just gave up.  I had the one audition, for the one place, and even though I had the opportunity to audition for other places, I never did.

I was lucky, though.  I found another thing that I love doing, and have am currently in my first month as a Chef\'s apprentice.  With a bit of luck, in 3 - 4 years time, I\'ll be fully qualified.  :)  Plus I look hot in my uniform ;)

I am, at least, taking advantage of this place. I am here to improve my english. I usually read my posts out loud as I am writing them, or after I have written them, to get a sense of the sentence-structure.

Bob, I have been called a natural talent as well. Yet I never take the praise as the truth. I always approach the positive feedback as if it was given out of pity, not out of respect. I don\'t believe in myself yet - but I still have two years worth of time to kick my self-confidence up. Hopefully I will succeed.

Oh god, you make me cringe! "is two different things", "writting". I\'m sorry love, but the make-my-point-excuse isn\'t going to cut it. There\'s just waay to many mistakes there for anyone to say that you don\'t need to improve. Its just writing, c\'mon!! If you got it right the first time, you\'d have more time to think about the "artistic" aspects of your text and less time correcting the technical issues. K?

Do what Darth Joyda is doing and use this place to improve your english. You might be a tad high-horse-ish about it, cuz you\'re a native english speaker. But by god, this Finnish boy speaks (or writes) better english!
