Title: Metal Gear Solid 3 confirmed for the PS2
Post by: MAKAVELIUK on January 25, 2003, 12:19:12 AM
Konami should have developed this on PS3 and that would have handed Sony a killer launch title, oh well I guess another MGS game on PS2 will have to do.

Ever the workaholic, famed Konami producer Hideo Kojima has been keeping busy with a slate of PlayStation2 sequels lately. With Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance already on shelves and Zone of Enders: Anubis expected to hit retailers next month, Kojima-san has turned his attention toward Metal Gear Solid 3. Albeit originally confirmed last fall, Kojima-san recently revealed in an interview with Famitsu that development isn\'t going to be as easy this time around.

Question: How did you spend 2002?

Kojima-san: It\'s hard to believe 2002 is already over, it went quick didn\'t it? I think the initial reaction to the September 2001 attack on New York was to condem games like Metal Gear Solid 2, and that impact lasted through 2002. The majority of my time was spent working on Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Zone of Enders: Anubis and beginning work on Metal Gear Solid 3.

Question: What can you tell us about Metal Gear Solid 3?

Kojima-san: Well, there will be another sequel. [smiles..] To be honest though, I didn\'t want to do a third installment. I don\'t like how companies feed off the popularity of a series and continually release sequels. In this case however, the outcry from the fans has been overwhelming and I\'m convinced there\'s enough new ideas for another Metal Gear. However, development isn\'t going to be easy and players shouldn\'t expect the game very soon. Trying to create the same type of visual and technical leap from Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Solid 2 will be extremely difficult. From 1 to 2 [Metal Gear Solid] we went from PlayStation to PlayStation2. Developing another installment on the PlayStation2 will force us to maximize the capabilities of the hardware. That\'s one of the reasons why I originally wanted to develop Metal Gear Solid 3 on PlayStation3. [smiles..]

Question: Visually, it seems like you\'ve already reached the limits of the PlayStation2. What more can you do?

Kojima-san: We\'re going to do our best. Certainly there are aspects of Metal Gear Solid 2 which can be improved upon - its not impossible because we\'re using the same hardware. Rather, in order to create that dramatic leap for the players we\'re planning to take the series in new directions.

OMFG ! :o  I can\'t believe he actually blames the events of Sept
11th 2001 for sagging sales of MGS2 SOL in it\'s late lifecycle. What\'s also shocking is too see he thinks of improving MGS3 over
MGS2 is a technical matter. New ideas aren\'t that hard to find
are they ? Lately, Kojima asked for fans\' input (Japanese players),
well here\'s my two cents :

Hints for MGS3 ;

1. Change gameplay environment. Please get rid of the metallic made base ( The base which Snake needs to inflitrate duhh...). A base perse ain\'t bad, but make it different in both looks and form so it\'ll affect gameplay in a revitalising way.

2. Get realism back into the game. Honestly.... MSG2\'s story was imo very far fetched, so convoluted it made a melodrama out of itself. That was really annoying imho becuz what you played in MGS2 was very strung to it, very dependant to that story. (.. becuz the story dicates the game environment, the level bosses etc.)
I don\'t know how he\'d do that with a group of 100 year dead Patriots, but I really hope realism will make it back into MGS3 so I will have a healthy motivation playing through missions which make sense.

3. Look ( don\'t steal ! :D   ) at other games for what they do well.
I REALLY can\'t believe Kojima is not gonna have a look at what makes Splinter Cell good. He should be able to pick up some hints there. Btw, I have a sure shot feeling Splinter Cell will outsell MGS2 Substance when they both release on PS2 in March 03.
(At least.. here in PAL regions)
Inspiration is also just around the corner. Team Silent at his own Konami is doing better imho than his\' these years. Get some of that gritty looks and environments from SH into MGS3. Don\'t copy paste, just have it influence MGS3. The Big Shell looked way too
bland and clean.

4. Get rid of Snake\'s mullet !  whahaha.

I hope there is more action and less cutscenes in MGS3.

Thank you captain obvious. Substance is a special edition disc, most likely hardcore fans and people who dont have the original will pick it up. Splinter Cell is a whole new game and therefore will appeal to a greater market.

Oh and Kojima didnt say 9/11 directly affected sales he said it had an impact. And I agree with him there. Sure it probaly was barely a factor but to say the 9/11 tragedy didnt affect sales at all is ludicrous.

Anyways I hope they dont change the core gameplay that much, new moves and abilities are great but I love MGS how it is now. Change enough to keep the series interesting but dont change what MGS is at the core.

As for cutscenes I agree there but I wouldnt mind if MGS3 had the same amount of cutscenes as MGS2, as long as the codec chats were kept for basic information and really short. I hated the 15 minute codec chats on MGS2. Especially when it was about the stupid Jack/Rose subplot *barf*.

p.s. The above was just a joke, if you didn\'t get that already.

Ok well first of all i am very glad that kojima is back instead of some underinspired newbie or somthing of the sort. The pros of mgs3 coming out for ps2 is that if it doesnt live up to the hype that im sure it will get, then by not releasing it on ps3\'s launch it wont ruin its future. What i mean, is that if they try to put out a classic for ps3 and murder it then the shit is going to hit the fan... for the fans. BUT on the other hand they dont even have tools for ps3 till maybe next year and they would also have to make ps3 ps2 compatible if they release it right before ps3 launch (aka mid to late 2004, barely a year before ps3. They need to bring back the dark and sinister feel of mgs 1, good times. Anyway, I had a lot to say but i kinda jagged on trying to explain half the crap i was talking about so.... yeah maybe ill try later when another point is set on the table.  :crap:  maybe not?

Totally agree with you Nicon. I think the Big Shell part blanded
becuz they spent a fair amount of "start-up time" on getting
used to the Ps2 hardware in the 1st place. So... they got into a
bit of time shortage before the deadline and thus the Big Shell
level design left alot 2b desired.... add on to that the stuff they
had to change due to 9-11 ....

Good news to hear.  Metal Gear Soild 2 is my favorite non-rpg game.  There was just something about it that made it different.  Hopefully Splinter Cell can hold me over for this one :)

Still.... I disagree with that. Sure 9/11 hurt the game a bit on the
developing side. He had to cut out or rearange some latter part
of the game (which takes place in NY) which took him time .
So in the end we only spend 0,1 % of the game in NY ; the fight versus Solidus. Since ppl who hadn\'t played it yet, don\'t know about that ; playing a very very small amount of time in NY at the very end of the game. How could they\'ve objected to play the game becuz of that if they didn\'t know (and again... it\'s only a very small part at the end). So.. blaming 9/11 for lagging sales at the end of 2002  (with a game like Splinter Cell on the rise) :o
C\'mon... somewhere back he said he kinda didn\'t see him self active in a MGS3 project, he asked Japanese players for advice on MGS3... LOL you gotta admit \'demand = money\' for MGS3 is high.
Kojima ran out of quality ideas a looooong time and now he\'s gotta stretch out the ones (few ?) he still has for MGS3.
So... get rid of vampires, sexual related story items (Raiden, Vamp..being bi-sexual...the stuff with Otacon and his stepmom and so on) and a get a bit of realism back into the game. Every time I\'m surprised my temper rises to flamable hights, whenever I think of MGS2... did it lt me down soooo much.. yeah it did becuz I like MGS1 so much. (and the full money I payed for MGS2.... yeah games are THAT expensive here in Europe ; € 69.... that\'s about the same in USDollars... hmmppf 65 USD maybe)

ooooook....

Can\'t really understand how you could be that disappointed in MGS2. Just doesn\'t make sense to me.

I loved the first one. The second one was good too but clearly not as good as the first.

Some people are just too hard to please.

I never got why people said get realism back in the game. You have a dude named Big Boss, huge walking nuclear weapons, psychic psychotics, genome soldiers, and a cyborg ninja you have long ago stpped passed that invisible line called realism. I\'ll agree I didn\'t like vamp in MGS2 but not because it was to unrealistic because he was a shitty character and there are way to many vampire characters out there.

ehh.. what I mean by realism in MGS is a defined context. All in MGS1 which is NOT realistic still remains within context of an overevolved high tech terrorist story. Adding a vampire in that
\'world, breaches that context. It feels \'forced\' and a change just
for the sake of change.... that\'s never a good thing imo...I mean,
hell, why don\'t we then just insert Harry Potter into MGS3
 .The bullet defying ability by Fortune was \'forced \'too. Of course... at the very very end we learn that it was high tech all the time. But we learn that too late in the game and only by spoken words, not by gameplay. That\'s just my hint to Mr. Kojima... don\'t go mixing genres or tech worlds with magic/fantasy worlds.
