A pledge for safe gun use
January 28, 2003
J. MICHAEL KELLY
OUTDOORS WRITER
Responsible firearms owners were lining up to take the pledge over the weekend.
The "Gun Owner\'s Safety Pledge" was available for signing at the Onondaga County Federation of Sportsmen\'s Clubs exhibit at the Northeastern Sport Show, which ran Friday through Sunday at the New York State Fairgrounds.
Printed and distributed by the Onondaga County Citizens Task Force on Gun Safety, the document reads as follows.
"To ensure that I am not the cause of anyone being harmed by my gun(s), I pledge the following:
I have taken or will take a certified course in gun safety.
I will store my guns and ammunition in an approved manner, such as with a gun safety lock or gun safe.
I recognize that children of all ages are naturally curious and will play with guns. Therefore, I will make sure that all children who enter my house will be safe from accidental injury."
Prominently displayed on the pledge sheet is the slogan of the National Rifle Association\'s child-oriented Eddie Eagle safety program, "If you see a gun, STOP. Don\'t touch! Leave the area. Tell an adult."

I would feel safer if more law abiding citizens carried guns. Outlaw guns and the only people to have them will be the
outlaws.
If some moron is popping people, I would hope someone like CHIZZY is around to take him out before he gets to me.

I honestly don\'t understand your point of view AT ALL. What the hell is wrong with a pledge?
-
I don\'t really understand it anymore why should we pledge about owning guns?
"I will store my guns and ammunition in an approved manner, such as with a gun safety lock or gun safe"
yeah approved by whom?
how about store? The fully loaded pistol I keep within arm\'s reach is not being stored. It is being used. When I\'m not there, it gets stored in a gun safe.
well, I guess you really have to love Guns to understand my point of view...
how will you feel if you have to do the same with Cars/knife/whatever that\'s considered to be dangerous?
-
Dude, it\'s not law. It\'s a pledge that people are voluntarily signing. No one is forcing you to do the same. Calm down.

maybe its the fatc that with guns you have the capability to cause harm on a much wider scale.
anyway it just might be me but i still don\'t see the need in owning a gun.
shurely your well enough protected in the US.
what with
the Might of the US armed forces
The National gaurd
Police
FBI
SWAT
etc..etc..
All armed to the back teeth.
then whats the need for private guns ?
-
I\'ve lived 35 years on this planet without a gun, and nothing I\'ve seen in my life makes me think I need to get one now. I\'ve been in some fights in my time, and I can tell you that if guns had been present in some of those situations, the outcome would have been MUCH WORSE than it was.
With all the half wit redneck cracker dumba$$ sh1t-for-brains know-nothing idiots in this country, I would feel much LESS safe if everyone had a gun. Guns are a public health crisis that we need to address. Your point about making a VOLUNTARY pledge regarding use of knives and cars is riciculous. Knives and Cars serve a legitimate purpose. Guns serve only one purpose: to kill people.
To all the people who "love guns:" :nut: Think about your own safety and the safety of your family. Try loving a human being instead.

If someone breaks into your house and is going to harm you or your family, you can give him a hug and tell him that you love him.
I\'ll look for a bat and knock him in to tomorrow.
I don\'t own a gun. I don\'t even desire to own a gun. I also don\'t have a desire to stop law abiding citizens from acquiring one.

This mythical home invasion fantasy that everyone seems so afraid of is actually an exceedingly rare occurance. I\'d rather take my chances with calling the police when someone tries to break into my house, than have a gun around that my children or their friends might try to play with.
-
It\'s not a fantasy or something I sit around being afraid of happening. It does happen, though and their are other reasons why someone might want to have a gun. The fantasy is that the police are going to help you. They\'ll help but most likely after the fact.
Why would your kids play with your gun? Unless you are irresponsible with it in the first place.

Surprisingly, I\'m with Ace on this one. You can not restrict the rights of people to arm themselves. As soon as you do, you are in a situation where you have to rely on someone else to protect you. That is never a great place to be.

About 7-8 years ago, three people robbed a bank, armed with assualt rifles and bullet proof vests. The military had no authority there at the time (never did, actually) and the police weren\'t armed enough to take them down. The shooting spree lasted for a good 2 hours, IIRC.
Now if CHIZZY was around...;)
Alos, if I have my facts straight, the 2nd amen. is there to protect us (the people) from an opressive government (like teh British!!!1!).

Toast and soldiers, muthaf*kka....TOAST AND SOLDIERS!
I only pack a blade these days.. but if someone pulled that shit near me...I\'d slice e\'m... no joke.

If you\'re talking about the North Hollywood bank robbery, it was 2 guys, not 3. Unless you\'re thinking of the movie "Heat," in which case it was 3 guys. :)
BTW we were talking about home invasions, not bank invasions. In California only peace officers are allowed to carry guns around in public, so you wouldn\'t have yours if you were in a bank that was being robbed.
-
Fizuck. Double post :(

I really had no idea :) It could have been 10 guys for all I know :)

Also, I wasn\'t sure of the gun laws in California. I don\'t know if they could have carried guns or not. But it still shows that the police were not armed well enough to stop them.
-
oddly enough, no one seens to like guns the way that I do...
I like/own \'em mainly because its part of me. I get a sense of rush firing them(I guess you don\'t know what I\'m talkin\' about until you fire a .45 ACP, or anything bigger for that matter).
For the sake of sharing someone tired to come through my 3rd floor window a week ago. my mom cought him right when he got half of my window open. Then she yelled "WTF are you doing at my window?! Ken grab your gun! someone try to come in!"
I don\'t care how many kinds of armed services we have here in the US. I simple do not feel safe without my own fire arms at my arm\'s reach.
We called the cops afterwards, but because he "ran" out the window the min. my mom start yelling she couldn\'t make out her face or any of his features at all. So the cop came and we did some talking and that\'s about the end of the story.
Yeah what would some of you do if he were to come in even with my mom yelling? I\'m not a big guy (5\'8") so fighting him head to head will likely result in me and my mom getting hurt. If he comes in and try to do any harm to me or my mom I\'ll just have to blow his head off with my .45 and that\'s that.
I know most of you are anti guns...but I just wanna share this true story of mine. I guess life here in NYC is getting worse and worse....
-
I love guns, too... I don\'t have a pistol permit (stupid NY laws...) but I own several rifles. There is nothing quite like cutting down trees with an AR-15 or AK-47. Instant gratification & stress release. Pumpkins and watermelons are fun, too. Or the skill involved in shooting a 1" group at 300 yards with a scoped .308 Rem.
I\'ve never fired full auto, but I will when I go to Vegass later this year. The closest I cam was when the sear on my SKS started to wear, and every once in a while I would get 3-4 round bursts.
I love the smell of cordite in the morning....
-
It\'s not all that hard to get a pistol license here in NYC if you have a clear record CHIZZY all your going to need is 6 months, a few hundred bucks and a trip to police plaza. Wait they will tell appoint you an interview later on... (*headache...).
I only fired a bolt action type of rifle once but didn\'t like it much because it hurt my shoulder really bad afterwards.
I want to fire a full-auto too!! give me a MP5 god damn NYC~!!!
1" group at 300yards??:nut:
I can\'t even do that at 50 yards with my USP .45ACP...:eyemouth:
i guess that\'s the beauty of long guns...:sconf:

cuz out of the ones you listed, only one(police) will take care of your personal saftey on a daily basis. Thats also when they show up on time.
My guns are for home protection, fun at the range, and when I have large amounts of cash on me.

thats a tin container with no top. but yea, does sound like a party :D
-
what kinda guns are those?
I\'m guessing the one on the right is a Beretta can\'t really make out the other one due the the lack of detail.
yeah yes guns are fun at the range. What kinda group are you getting at let say 25 yards? Or do you just burst out all the ammo you have and could careless about how you did?
-
Yup, a Berretta. The one on the left is a Sig Sauer P228. To be honest, I just started not long ago and wasnt paying attention. I have only went to the range 4 times due to a lack of time. 3 of the 4 were to release some steam and the last...
