A Japanese scientist has developed a coat which appears to make the wearer invisible.
The illusion was part of a demonstration of optical camouflage technology at Tokyo University.
It is the brainchild of Professor Susumu Tachi who is in the early stage of research he hopes will eventually make camouflaged objects virtually transparent.
The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect.
It\'s hoped the technology will be useful for surgeons frustrated their own hands and surgical tools can block their view of operations and pilots who wish cockpit floors were transparent for landings.

THat is just too coool.
Bond is gonna be jealous.
-
When do they start making underwear out of that stuff?
-
Holy crap. That is cool.... URL?
-
I\'ve known about this development for a while. And it\'s still freak\'n cool to me!
-
So, how does it actually work? Much like how the car does in Die Another Day (I know thats a movie but it sounded plausible).
-
It\'s hoped the technology will be used by surgeons and airlines? PFFFT... right. The US military is probably going to buy up the copyrights and use it for their SpecOps.. and then later as standard issue camo when the technology has been perfected. Watch.. it\'ll happen, if they don\'t already have something similar to this underwraps already.

yeah, too bad we won\'t see it for another billion years. Japan is so far ahead of us its not even funny.

I really think its fake.
But if it is reall, doubt it, but if it is. It sounds pretty good.
-
She\'s not wearing underwear. :p
-
It\'s a real story, but it hasn\'t been invented, yet.
That\'s just a concept photograph.

if japan is a billion years ahead of us, then they are a TRILLION years ahead of OZ...
except in the surfing/barbie area... if what TV has told me is true...
j/k ;)

Harry Potter\'s cloak works better ;)
-
I can do that in Photoshop. May I consider myself a scientist? :D
-
Bah, Japan isn\'t THAT far ahead of us. Usually, I tend to think of our two countries as being on even ground.
The US is relant on building new inventions based on new discoveries, then makes new products that noone has ever thought of before.
Japan takes those ideas and refines them, miniatureizes them, and then combines them with other products.
Not to say that\'s how it always works, but that seems to be the general trend. The best products on the market now (including Videogames) are ingenious combinations of American ingenuity and Japaneese expertice.

Adan- Hahaha. ;)
Seriously with as much talent as an average Photoshopper has, I don\'t think anyone will believe a transparent suit is real by seeing a pic on the net. Even a downloadable video will have a lot of skeptics.
Sonyfan- I totally agree with your assesment. The only reason Japan is so technolgically advanced is because their country is small (internet & networking infrastructure is a breeze to setup there, which is why just about everyone is on broadband) and they don\'t have to fund a military. ;)
-
Sounds interesting. The picture doesn\'t impress me though. I do agree that Japan is ahead in terms of technology. Japan is the leading industrial country in the world, as simple as that.
-
I want one.
-
I want a shirt made out of that stuff. Hell, I want a whole suit made out of that stuff. Its not completely trasparent, but its still cool as hell. To bad it doesnt exist yet. Photoshop can be fun.

The thread I took this info from in another forum, the general consensus seems to be that this is a demonstration of "green screen" technology and how they are trying to apply it without the "green screen" This however is not a *true* invisibility cloak, but they are working on it and looks promising.
Personally, I think this shouldnt even be pursued. Think of what could be done if even just 5 of the wrong ppl got their hands on this.
-
I can still see her though. It\'s not working.

Think of all the girls locker rooms that would be invaded with horny little rich kids.
-
I found a link to this- with multiple movies.

Hey, I might be able to sneak into the girls locker room with one of those :D . But seriously, there are probably a lot of uses for that. Militarily and in our every day lives.

i want one in a hat. cuz it would look funny.
