Title: Help! (Hardware problems)
Post by: AeonGrey on February 06, 2003, 08:13:59 PM
I\'ve had my PS2 since they came out, and lately it\'s been acting really strange.  It has a lot of trouble loading any PS1 games and a few of my PS2 games freeze up for no reason during play.  I realize there\'s a possibility this could be a problem with my discs, but most of the discs I have problems with, I\'ll turn them over to check for scratches and they\'re flawless.  Does anyone have any recommendations at all??  Thank you for any help...

It means your PS2 is dying. Time to save up money for your 2nd PS2 pal.

What the ****? Dying? What a crock of shit.  I had a PS1 for twice as long as I\'ve had this thing and it never gave me trouble.  Oh well, I was afraid that was what was happening.  That is such a bunch of shit that something I shelled out 300 dollars for is only lasting me 3 years.  If this is the direction the reliability of these things is going, this is gonna be my last game console.

Yeah, ps2 is apparently full of defects. Just try to call up Sony, they will fix it free of charge. Make sure they make it free. Its their fault.

I have also had a launch PS2 and had similar problems.  Do yourself a favour.  Open the PS2 (depending if you want to break the seal) and remove all the dust from it.  Dust is one of the worst forms of demolishing when it comes to this kind of thing.

I did it to mine it it works fine now...I actually service it every 4 months (not really service, just cleaning the console on the inside to avoid future problems.)

Allright well, I gues I might as well go ahead and crack it open.  As long as I don\'t make it any worse I don\'t see what the problem is.  Sure I\'ll void the warranty, but what good will it do me anyway, I\'ll have to pay to have Sony fix the damn thing anyway.  Thanks for the advice.

Yep, sounds like a dust problem, might be that the laser is failing also but it\'s definitely worth trying to clean the dust out of it. A smart idea is to use a can of compressed air on the components and the dust will fly off :). I use it for my pc, keyboard, tv, monitor, you name it.

Cleaning  the laser on the ps2: when you have the dvdrom opened up, use som rubbing alcohol and a  lint-free cloth on the laser. (i used a q-tip and only water, worked like a charm tho)

The sad thing about all this is, I\'ve been talking to people who got my ps2 around the same time I did, and a lot of people are running into this problem.  This is ****ing ridiculous.  If I can\'t fix this thing, I\'m never buying another console.

What no one mentioned the swap trick yet?  Buy a new one at wal-mart, switch consoles and return the flaky one.

Too unethical for the lot of ya?  Or do they check/keep records of serials at Walmart?

I wouldn\'t want to curse anyone with this thing.  I\'ll toss it in a dumpster and sell all my games as a last resort if I have to.  It\'s only a videogame console, I\'ll move on.
