I\'m so pissed today!

I found out my ps2 is pretty damaged.
First of all I take extremely good care of my ps2 +games.I never lend them to anyone and I cherish them like crazy.

I got my ps2 like 8 months ago and already it\'s causing me problems.
It always made weird noises(right from the start)but I used to think that was nothing to worry about.Now I found out that the ps2 scratches my cd\'s!
I bought DMC last week,I played it two times and the disc is already scratched all over.PLus when I played the game and when I arrived at the Magma lava spider,there was massive slowdown!


I\'ve heard about the ps2 getting dusty very fast but this is crazy!
I\'m thinking about sending it to sony but I wanted to post my problems here first.

I invest in my ps2.I buy games and I expect to play them for a long time.I don\'t expect my ps2 to be worthless after less then a year.
I\'ve never heard of these dust problems with the x-box or the gamecube so maybe sony should think about this.

Any thoughts about what I should do?

P.S:If I sound pissed then it\'s because I am.  :hat:

How many times has the PS2 scratched your CD\'s?  If it\'s just the one occasion, then perhaps it was something you did to trigger it.

Did you move it while the machine was turned on (and the CD inside?). That\'s a common problem for the PS2, which will often cause it to scratch CD\'s.

No I didn\'t move it.You know how the ps2 makes a weird noise with blue disc,well mine makes that kinda noise with every disc.

And all of a sudden I get lag were normally everything would be fine.Like tony hawk 3 multiplayer,mgs2 and DMC now all have framedrops.I refuse to believe it could be that dusty already!

P.S:I never had this problem with the snes(bless him/her).  :hat:

Mine... makes no noice with the blue disks ;)

Perhaps it could be a combination of dust/pre-existing scratches/dirt on the disks.

But the sounds that your PS2 is making is definately a problem.I doubt your warrantee is up, so opening it up yourself may not be the best thing.

I\'m stumped. :)

I indeed don\'t have the technical knowledge(nor the guts) to open it up myself.

I\'ve sent an e-mail to the company I got it from and if that doesn\'t work out,I\'ll send to Sony directly.

Looks like no ps2 for me for a while.

If you want to open it up and have a poke around, I suggest you head on over to GameFaqs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/game/26308.html) where they should have some neat-o cleaning (or else wise) FAQ\'s to help you.  :)

If it is still under warranty DO NOT open it yourself or you will invalidate it. Just send to Sony and let them sort it.

Don\'t underestimate the power of the dust man.. anyway, check the version that your reader is.  if it says anything less then 2.2 you have an older version.  I have the first kind of PS2 that was released, so I have the 1.2 driver for the disk reader. (It is a big pain in the ass trying to play "Blue disks") One thing that might help you with your little problem is purchasing the dvd remote with update disk.  This will update your drivers to the 2.2 version.  It costs 20 bucks, but if it fixes your problem, its well worthi it.  Other then that, I dont know what to tell you.  Try using a lens cleaner and keep your plastation in a dust free enviroment I suppose.

My version is:SCPH-30004 R

So I guess that\'s the 3rd version so it should be fine.

As for the tip to place it in a dustfree environment,I honestly don\'t think there is such a thing as a dustfree environment.In some areas the dust is just more visible then others.

Anyway I did the best I could for now and let\'s just hope everything lands on its feet.

When I opened and cleaned mine out, there were litterally dust clumps in it. I cleaned it and moved it to a less dusty area and works fine :)

Got something for you to try Metal:

   The PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system has an auto-diagnosis feature that automatically
adjusts the settings of the console to run your PlayStation(R)2 format software at optimum levels.  
You may want to try the auto diagnosis feature to update the system settings when you experience
trouble playing PlayStation(R)2 format software.  (The auto diagnosis will not improve playback
quality for the original PlayStation(R) format software titles; it is only good for PlayStation 2
format software titles.)

To use the auto diagnosis feature:
==================================
1) You must be in the "main menu" screen of the PlayStation 2 console

2) Highlight "Browser" and press the "triangle button"

3) Select "Console" using the up and down directional buttons and press the "Triangle" button

4) Press the "X" button and highlight "On" using the up and down directional buttons; press the "X"
button to confirm

5) Insert a disc.  The console automatically starts the diagnosis

6) Press the "Circle" button two times to back out to the Browser Screen; highlight "Browser" and
press the "X" button.  Once in the Browser, press the "X" button to load the game.

Please note:  The diagnosis setting automatically returns to "Off" (default setting) when you press
the "Reset" button or start playing a PlayStation 2 format software title.

In addition, it is important to maintain your PlayStation 2 console by keeping the vents on the
console free of dust.  Because dust can accumulate in the vents on both the front and rear panels of
the PlayStation 2 console, we recommend that you check the vents from time to time.  After turning
off your console, and unplugging it from the electrical outlet, you may remove any accumulated dust
with the hose attachment of your vacuum cleaner or with a small handheld vacuum.

We also do not recommend the use of any type of lens cleaner.  Doing so may actually cause more
problems for your PlayStation 2 console.  Instead, we only recommend that you clean your PlayStation
and PlayStation 2 format software discs/DVD discs using lint-free "CD wipes" found at your local
software stores.  When cleaning your discs, we recommend starting at the inside circle, and wiping
out to the edge in a straight line.  We do not recommend wiping in a circle motion, as it may cause
scratches on the disc.



Im gonna try this out tonight in hopes that it will let me use my blue disks

Hhmm.. the vacumm cleaner is a good idea...I might invest in one small vac myself.

btw, is there any fans and vents on the Xbox and GC like the PS2? Just curious.

Since you\'ve said that you bought the PS2 8 months ago, I\'d say send it back to Sony and make them ship you a new one, or at least repair the one that you have.  Depending on where you got it, they may have improperly handled the product while it was shipping and stuff like that.  Whatever it is, if it\'s seriously scratching your discs, I\'d say send it to Sony.  There was originally a problem like this with the very first batch of PS2s, but since then, Sony has supposedly fixed the problem

I\'ve had my ps2 for a year, with the only problem being a slight grinding noise when my cd tray closes.  About 5 months ago I changed my entertainment center setup, and my ps2 setup from horizontal to vertical.  Since going vertical I haven\'t had any problems with dust and the grinding noise went away.

Vertical = no dust settling on the lens

I\'ve had mine since... the release date of the JPN version, and it\'s still chuggin nicely for me.. However I recently came across a noted problem with the first batch of JPN PS2s and Star Ocean 3.  Supposedly the game hangs up left and right.  GREAT.

But yeah, chuggin, chuggin...  Recently it even made me a cup of coffee

mine once scrathcehed the **** out of gt3, i just took it back, luckily it as eb, with no q asked, i said it was like it when i ought it.. id ring sony, get them to check your ps2
