taken from the GRADAR forum
I was just watching MTV and an advert came on. It showed the guy from The Getaway stadding against a wall, he put his guns away. It then showed some Tekken fighters backing away from each other. Then it showed Ratchett putting his gun away and finally showed Tommy Vercetti lowering his gun. Words then filled the screen, it said "No war, please" then the Sony symbols came up, but the O was a peace sign. All to a melancholy tune.

Bravo... Hehe, I was touched.
-
Yeah...when it came to the GTA game, when he was putting his gun down...it really makes you think about that kind of stuff. This whole war has got me thinking a lot. War is hell, death is tragedy. I just want it to end. I dunno what I\'d do if mass terrorism starts breaking out and tens of thousands of people get sick from stupid viruses. I hate Osoma and Suddam Hussein (So-Damn Insane).
-
Well said. Also reveals the insignificance of videogames, and the real problems at hand.
-
Well, I don\'t really think videogames are insignificant in any way. They\'re just like other media like books, music and film at that ; part of the peacefull everyday life we cherish. To some extent they can even prove a sort of catharsis effect on what NOT to do.
Heck, Hideo Kojima gets his peacefull message accros to millions of ppl via a \'simple\' video game called MGS. That\'s a good thing imho :)
-
Olé! Bravo for Sony or for that who has made that add.
-
it makes you want to reach out and hug someone.
/me hugs Adan
-
First I could not believe it..
It did not look very "Sony:ish" if you know what I mean..
Very unlike them..
But props for Sony for standing up.
PS: The song.. THE song, why not choose John Lennon’s “Give Peace a chance” or something? :p
-
it\'s tacky and pathetic
thier using the war as a backdrop and anti-war mentality to sell titles
sony wants to stop war/fighting?
stop releasing violent games

Yeah because we all know violent videogames cause wars.Sadam is probably playing carmageddon as we speak.(Note the sarcasm).
-
so yer saying kids playing violent games do not desensitize them to violence?
we\'re a violent culture. the media we watch and listen to has turned us into this
violence has become almost comical
its absurd to even contest this
-
If kids aren\'t allowed to play videogames, they shouldn\'t be allowed to watch the news either. With all the slaughter going on in Israel.
Maybe it\'s just me but i find playing games vents my frustration. So when I\'m aggresive, instead of going into a bar and punching someone in the nose I\'ll just play guilty gear x for half an hour and my agression\'s gone.
My two cents.
-
but why do you feel violent when you become "frustrated"
where does this compulsion come from?
why does seeing violence make you feel better?
-

i Do :(
Dose that mean i am EVIL ?
:crying:....:crying:.....:crying:
;)
-
no, not really
it just means yer a violent person and would react violently in situations
-
Seeing violence doesn\'t necessarily vent ones frustrations while playing videogames. Overcoming goals and obstacles in an interactive environemnt by whatever means necessary (including, but not exclusive to violence) does.
He finds Guilty Gear X fun. It\'s not as thought he\'s extremely frustrated, goes and watches two guys beat the hell out of eachother ("seeing violence") and think; "Ahhh, that\'s better".
-
but thats basically what he said
-
Perhaps. His statement is a little ambiguous. :) But I\'m sure if he was losing at Guilty Gear, his frustration would not be vented, despite seeing one of the characters beaten to a pulp.
:)
-
if he was losing at guilty gear, would he become MORE frustrated?
-
Let\'s just hope that day never comes...
If so, may God help us all.
But I see your point. :)
-
Beautiful irony there. :D Games criticized for its violence are NOTHING compared to the real thing : WAR. :p
Makes one realize just where YOU\'RE priorities are, huh? :D
-
wtf?
please stick to spamming off-topic and not intelligent discussions, thanks
-
I was referring to the Sony advertizement. What I said is not spamming.
Edit : hmmm...maybe mm didn\'t understand my reply. Games like GTA3, Tekken 4 and the Getaway have been criticized for being too graphic in its violence. Yet they hold no candle to the impending war in Iraq that is yet to come. That\'s the irony.

It\'s a good thing I never loose at Guilty Gear X. :hat:
Just kidding.
mm,I just think that if videogames cause violent outburst then that videogame was just the straw that broke the cammels back.So he or she was obviuosly already frustrated and playing the game just triggered the reaction.Consequently this trigger could also be a movie,a series or watching the news.So if we don\'t want this to happen we have to ban all entertainment.
That means no movies, series or videogames! What a nice world would that be ;)
If someone gets violent after playing a game, then their character is already violent, the game is just the trigger but this trigger could be anything.
About the fact that playing games make you less sensitive to violence(you become immuun,if you will,) I think thats partially true. But it\'s not the big deal we are making it in this thread.
Maybe Kubrick knew it all along with his worldfamous, immuun to violence scene, from a clockwork orange.

Interesting ad, they were still selling the PS2 with it but also the message. I for one can\'t see much wrong with this as Movie Stars, TV celebs, and Musicians/Singers have all had their say. Why can\'t the people in the gaming industry have their say ? Ok so the others hadn\'t run ads for it, but then again how many of the games industry get onto primetime TV to say their piece ?
As for desensitizing them to violence, thats open to debate. I doubt it though. I think if the news agencys once in awhile were more honest with the reporting, showing what these dead in a War look like. The butchery of these people, and somehow show these people were similar to others that we all know, it\'d go along way to stopping this type of thing. Why do you think so many people are replused by sites like Rotton (guess the rest, not that most need to) ? IMHO doing something in a game should never give you the feeling like it would be to see your brother, sister etc. butchered. Someone that you\'ve known most of your life as to that of a computer generated character that you\'ve seen a few hours at the most.
The reality is much different than that of the entertainment industry IMO. But at times it suits some if you can\'t see the difference between the two, it makes it easier to do their bidding.

Huh?? wtf are u talking about?? That\'s why we have game ratings!!
About 95% percentage of games are based on some sort of violence. Even innocent games like Mario requires you to jump on some poor defenceless creature and smack them up.
There\'s zillion more violence in sex in movies,tv, porn mags and everything else. if that\'s the case, are you saying we should all be watching "Sesame Street" and play "Monopoly" instead??
Go get a grip.

"There\'s a console war?" Apparently that advert. is not quite Sony official but it looks like they won\'t stop it from airing.
-
Free ad for SONY. I wouldn\'t protest if I\'m SONY either.
-
get a grip?
paul, you missed the ENTIRE point of what i said
tell me again how violent media does not desensitize us
-
Yeah, peace and love and harmony....
-
Great!
While we are playing videogames, our enemies can keep flying planes into our skyscrapers.
Sony, stick to making games and TVs.

The point is, you specifically mentioned video games
stop releasing violent videogames
You are beginning to sound like that Lieberman guy...
The FACT is most, if not all, videogames potray some sort of violence, but that doesn\'t turns the majority of videogamers into gun shooting freaks and katana wielding samurais.
-
MM.
If and when we get into this war, will it be the first?
Are video games any worse than the fairs they use to have for hangings?
If by some chance it does desensitize the youth. Is that a bad thing? Someone has to fight the wars created by all these people that have never played a video game.
It\'s ludicrous. I am a firm believer that humans have an urge to see death. If we were not hunters by nature then we would most likely be extinct. I would much rather have some kid get his aggression out on a video game, than my head in a dark alley.
-
Yeah, today while I was playing Vice City. I got this urge to steal a car, and go out and kill people<
So I did, then the cops were after me, and I used the violence that I learned from Tekken 4 and kicked all the cops ass<
Then I jacked this clown for his car, you know b/c all clown cars have missiles and stuff <
Violence in the media doesn\'t make NORMAL people go stupid. If you people do go stupid from v-games, there was something wrong with them in the first place. Most video game violence is unreal. I mean there is no way you can blame stealing a car and killing the owner on VC, b/c if you\'re stupid enough to think that the cops will behave like they did on the game, then your don\'t brainwashed by video games, you\'re just retarded.
You can\'t blame the media for giving us what we want, that\'s their job. We can\'t blame them for everysingle violent act, or blame them for the violence.
-
I havent seen this commercial, but I think SONY is just trying to help, but I am not impressed, they are selling VIOLENCE. Sure I love all those violent, bloody, mindless games. But they are helping, hopefully their mean it.
I\'m not trying to argue, but lets hope they mean it. And not just advertising their games.
I\'ll look out for this commercial, looks like i\'ll have to suffer through an hour or two of MTV.
-
^^^ You\'ll probably get to hear news about the Spice Girls reunion! YAYAYAYYA!!!!
-
mm, I \'m sure that media does desensitize us, though probably videogames to a lesser extent than say, real footage on the news of dead people or tradgedies.... but as to "where violence comes from"...
That\'s not learned, that\'s inborn. We\'re descendant from animals, we have emotions, and instincts. There was violence before mass media, there\'s violence in nature, and there\'ll be violence all over the earth long after we wipe ourselves off the planet. Violence is a part of the universe, a constant from the smallest organism to the largest sytems or clockworks. Everything wants to survive, and because of entropy everything does it at SOMETHING\'s expense.
