Title: Plasma HDTV don\'t last a life time. Especially if you\'re a gamer.
Post by: GmanJoe on February 12, 2003, 08:41:56 PM
http://www.plasmapoint.co.uk/plasmascreenadvantages.htm

20,000 to 30,000 hours before it fades by half its brightness. THen it gets worse after that.

Gaming and watching TV would last far less than 10 years, especially if more than one person uses the plasma TV. Too expensive and won\'t even last forever. No way.

nothing lasts forever..especially electronics.  And don\'t you think far superior televisions will be released 10 years from now?  10 years sounds like a decent lifespan for a television...but those plasma tvs are way too expensive now to be worth it.  Eventually the price will drop, but damn they look so sweet.

That\'s the point I was trying to bring up. If a TV is used sparingly at 5 hours a day, fine. 10 years. But like my girlfriend\'s plasma TV, one sister watches in the morning for an hour. My fiance will watch it for a couple of hours in the afternoon for both video games and TV, then her other sister uses it for video games and TV for the next 2 hours. Then their dad will watch it non-stop from 7pm to 11am.

That\'s not uncommon for TVs to be used like that. I still have an old Sony 32" TV from 1987 and it still like new.

I still prefer the cathode ray TVs. They are always dependable and cheap and also cheap to fix and the picture quality today is excellent. I have my ps2 hooked up to one with a Component Video jack and the picture is incredible.

No TV\'s will "last a life time". Not gonna happen.

Besides, in 10 years I\'ll definatly not own the same TV - at least not as my main TV. :D

It is very well known that Plasma TVs have a very large failure rate right off the assembly line.  They have actually brought the failure rate down so you are noticing this by the prices dropping.

Plasma is awful with burn in.  Probably the worst.  They have also been plagued by pixels becoming blurry or even failing all together.

10 years is really not that long.  I would certainly not want my cost of a TV amertized over it\'s life to cost me 2-3 grand per year.  Although they are cheaper now, the TVs we are talking about failing are older and very expensive.

For gaming DLP is the way to go.  No Burn in problems.  Hopefully after the summer I am going to get one.  It\'s tough to jump in though since I already have an HD setup, but I want to get a standard HD setup as well.  I\'ve been readig a heck of a lot and although Plasmas look fantastic from the side, there are just too many negatives still.
