Title: England, Britain and UK
Post by: Seed_Of_Evil on March 01, 2003, 07:29:22 AM: The second parto of this academic course includes English Literature instead of English language. As introduction, the book offers a brief chapter about the history of England and touchs the concepts of ENGLAND, (Great)BRITAIN and UNITED KINGDOM. I didn\'t understand it at school, neither at HS. And I want at University to understand the difference between these three concepts. The book puzzled me even more... so Can anybody explain me this?

Great Britain = comprised England, Scotland, and Wales.
United Kingdom = comprised of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Commonwealth = (in this context) Any state which recognises the British Monarch as the head of state. i.e. Australia is a part of the Commonwealth.

Edited the Comonwealth definition, so as to make it easier to understand. :)

Southern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland, or EIRE, is not part of either Great Britian OR the United Kingdom, it is it\'s own seperate entity within the European Union, and is not governed by the laws of the UK. This for example, is why the Republic of Ireland adopted the Euro as it\'s monetary system, whilst the rest of Britain/United Kingdom did not.

Yes.

Yes. Although she has a representative here, in her place. Who has to approve any new laws, etc. He\'s basically just a figure head with no real power. And many Australian\'s believe we should be a republic. One day, it\'s sure to happen.

Yes, she is on our currency (coins).

I\'m not sure, I\'ve never tried. I would assume it\'s just like travelling anywhere else in the world.
