Title: No more Opera for me
Post by: EmperorRob on March 10, 2003, 05:35:03 PM
I was thinking about shelling out the $$$ for this browser but now they have pissed me off by putting ads in the toolbar with sound.  n0-0ne I guess that makes you the only one using it now.  I\'m going back to mozilla.

Actuallly I\'m going back and forth between Pheonix and Opera, I love Opera\'s mouse gestures but Mozilla doesn\'t have the same compatability issues.

And ahem, there are ways to remove the ad ;)

Mozilla feels too bloated, but Pheonix is definetly a step in the right direction for the Mozilla project I\'m really liking it.

Sounds in the ad?  I haven\'t encountered that yet.  I haven\'t installed 7.02 yet, tho.  Did it start with 7.02?

I personally use Mozilla on my OS X .

What\'s this Pheonix thing you speak of?!?

Yea I\'m using Opera 6.0...  No sounds.  I\'m happy with it.  On the rare occasion a page won\'t load, that\'s when I dust off IE...

Opera 6.11 for Linux and I haven\'t specified any prefs for ads in the options (like who the hell would?).

Mozilla is faster on linux than windows but it\'s performance is almost identical once it gets started up.  When I\'m in win2k I don\'t use the \'load on boot crap\' either.

And yes it is bloated and a memory hog but it\'s pretty robust.

Phoenix is a trimmed down version of mozilla.

I\'ve never tried anything but IE... sure it sucks, but ignorance is bliss... I\'m not too serious about web surfing anyhoo... as long as this page loads and a few others I\'m happy....

What are the benefits of mozilla or opera or even netscape?

I only use IE as well.  It does FTP and web surfing.  Not much more I need.  I think people just like to be cool by not using IE.

Wrong.
IE is a slow piece ole\' shit on OS X. I used IE when I had Windows, but it is just not an option when it comes to serious surfing on OS X.

99% of us aren\'t using jaguar.

Well for those who are usign Jaguar the best browsers are Safari and Chimera or Camino as it\'s called now adays. It\'s a part of the Mozilla project but it\'s made from the ground up for OS X it\'s fast and it\'s nice.

On Windows I simply get bored with using IE, it doesn\'t have tabs and all these nice things, there are browsers out there that use the IE rendering engine but offer things like tabs and whatnot, Crazybrowser, MyIE2 and Netcaptor for instance.

But the main reason I don\'t use IE for my primary browser is simple, proper .png support, I visit a lot of sites that use .png\'s and IE get\'s the colors wrong and doesn\'t even recognize the transparency in it. Which sucks because .png is the best image format since..hell it\'s just the best format out there.

tabs are multiple windows in one browser

Tabs are the only proper way to surf the \'net. Screw opening a bunch of new windows. That\'s too much multi-tasking for moi.

IE does the job for me. Don\'t need to spend more cash on something else. I\'d rather go and buy a shirt. :D

I have used Mozilla for along time. It\'s bloated, but I have no problems with it.

I am about to go and load up Camino tho\'. I have tried Apple\'s Safari and I couldn\'t stand the GUI.

I\'d say you\'d get better page rendering with Camino then with Safari too, Gecko is a much more mature rendering engine than KHTML.

There is a program out there that you may like, it\'s called demetalizer or something, basically it makes makes brush metal apps like Safari and such look like normal OS X apps, there\'s a whole lot of people that don\'t like the brush metal interface too much.

Tabs rule.  Also when I use Mozilla I don\'t have to continuously hit alt+f4 to kill all the damn pop-up windows b/c you can turn that litte annoying piece of javascript off.

I use to surf the \'net constantly opening a new window. I have a terrible habit of surfin\' for one thing (as of now, I have a tab open for a region free PAL>NTSC DVD player , another one at DVDTALK.com, one at Ebay and one for this page..) while surfin\' for a zillion other things. Of course, I ended up havin way to many windows open to keep track of.

Downloaded Mozilla, discovered tabs and now I just keep my browser filled with different tabs. To be honest, I can\'t go back to "Open New Window"...Ugh! To "old school".
