well it seems so to me, over the past couple of years the U.N has come to almost completly lost all the power that it possesed (assuming they had any power to begin with). the organization is just like a bigger version of the arab summitt.
its all talk, hundreds of meetings but no apparent decisive actions, in fact most meetings end with more problems (for lack of a better word) than before.
and in away one can view the U.N as heading towards the same fate as the "league of nations".
so all this being said, I would like to know what the opinions of the members on this particular topic.
btw this is my first attempt at starting a debate (well theirs got to be a first time for everything :)), so if my foundation for it isn\'t good, I apologize.

Dont worry about it. We are laid back in here. No real style or law to follow as long as you keep the insults away if you and another strongly disagree.
As for your topic though. I believe the UN to be a joke. I think its just a good way to waste time and money.
-
I Don\'t have a major problem with the UN, but if it is to be gotten rid of, there NEEDS to be another organization to follow it.
-
It\'s a big decision-making organization. But it doesn\'t have any teeth.
-
i would say thatgroups like UNICEF, UNDP, WHO & UNCHR are more important than the UN as a policy maker.
Groups like UNICEF provide criticaly needed support through the thridworld and along with war zones.
-
I think the UN will still be there for a long time.
-
Whether or not the UN will be around or not is one thing, it being a relevent body is another thing.
As far as I can see, the UN has been a failure, and has almost NEVER been a significant organization. Now, there "may" have been a few cases that the UN stopped a war, made an international deal here and there, but overall, with the continue deteriation of, bascically the entire continent of Africa, their failure to disarm Iraq, the North Korean crisis, Rwanda, doing nothing in Bosnia (it was NATO and the US, NOT the UN), its a useless organization (funded by your tax dollars BTW [US pays the most and the US is the most bashed in this organization]).
-
Well this morning just showed us how relevant the UN is. I think the US, UK and Spain did the right thing. France was saying it was going to veto any resolution that authorized force no matter what. The UN is ineffective and it was proven yet again today. I don\'t see the UN ever taking on an issue like this again.
-
When you were little and your parents threatened to ground you if you misbehaved, you listened and obeyed...
If your parents just told you to behave, most of you probably became worse...
The UN demands Iraq to disarm but doesn\'t threaten force...
You think Iraq will listen?
-
Very good point Ashford. I never really thought about that. But also, Iraq thinks that they could beat us so why should they listen?

What a pretentious thread. A little kiddie saying the UN doesn\'t do anything and is insignificant, just because he heard some smartass journalist utter the very same words. Does everyone remember The First Gulf War, Bosnia, Serbia, East Timor? Grow some pubic hair before you try to talk about grown up stuff.
That\'s right Tyrant, I\'m calling you a baby. Baby.
-
I have to wonder what the point of that was , Avvy..
Tyrant brings up a good point. The UN is being ignored in this situation. Does it nullify the importance of the UN? It\'s a good question.
-
I\'d have to disagree. This is just a case of monkey see monkey do. I don\'t belive Tyrant really understands the significance of his question; and the fact that he asked it has miffed me.
When The Australian PM announced that Australian troops were being commited, he spent quite a bit of time arguing the legality of this whole operation. So will The US President and The British PM when they make their war speeches. They won\'t be using their own domestic laws, they\'ll be using UN resolutions that have already been passed.
International Law.

ohhh.. looks like i struck a nerve with u avvy,
u speak of the first gulf war, east timor, bosnia, serbia- but were are we now.
were on the verge of a second gulf war, east timor (well i\'ll give u this, ) bosnia & serbia the U.N did shit over there, it was all N.A.T.O. (i\'ll try to elaborate more when i get back from uni.)
oh.... btw i\'m no little kiddie nor did i reiterate some smartass journalists question. all i did was ask a legitamite question which was quite frankly not deserving of your petty insults. so next time if all you\'ve got on yer mind is name calling i suggest that u keep yer opinions to your self.

Avy, watch it. You are close to insults( or so that post calling tyrant a baby seems to be anyway)..so just becareful. :)

UN works. Like I said. It\'s the ignorant people that don\'t let it work.
-
And a lot of the ignorant people work for the UN.
The only example that Avatarr used where the UN WAS involved intensely was East Timor and at the beginning of the First Gulf War, and this is also in question. This was after East Timor voted for Independance from Indonesia, and this was after a group of thugs loyal to Indonesia went on a killing spree (I think "maybe" they were involved in keeping the election clean with ballot monitors, this I\'m not sure about). In The First Gulf War, we did get international support, and in the end, got those resoulutions passed. However, isn\'t the fact that we are still dealing with Saddam tell you something about the effectiveness of the UN? And in Bosnia/Serbia, it was the US and NATO that was involved for most of the time. The UN did the easy job of "peacekeeping" after the US and NATO did the heavy lifting.
And there are countless times when the UN FAILED to act. The UN could\'ve been somewhat effective force. Instead, as it stands right now, they are irrelevent.
