Is this in terms of outright grunt and destructive capability or skill and efficiency? If it\'s skill and efficiency then the U.S don\'t appear on my list I\'m afraid to say.

Then what is your list?  This ought to be good for a laugh.

If you count successes to balls ups then no.

I knew this would offend people. A lot of the Americans here have just added me to their axis of evil as I don\'t fully agree with them.

No I am not offended, I just find your opinion completely baseless.  Delta Force is equal to the SAS in every respect.  It is obvious you know nothing of the military in general as you are listing special forces and the question was military power.  The SAS and Delta are a very small (and I do mean small) percentage of the overall armed forces of each their respected countries.

I also know you are referring to skill and efficiency - pfft... to leave the US out of the top 5 shows your ignorance toward military history in general.

As long as USA is number one I don\'t give a rats shit who is number 2.

Thank God for Reagan.

I wonder what our military would be like if he didn\'t pump so much cash into it.

Thank God for Reagan?

Yeah, wouldn\'t it be an awful disaster if we only spent twice as much as our closest competitor on our military, instead of six times as much?  What damn difference would it have made?  We already know that we didn\'t need our huge arsenal to defend us against the Russians, which was Reagan\'s reason for the 80\'s buildup.  It\'s not enough that we have superiority, we have to have ENDLESS, MEGA superiority.

We spend an obscene amount of money on this military, while 32 million of our citizens live in poverty.  The poverty rate continues to rise every year, now over 11%  The spending spree hasn\'t been so beneficial for some of our people, but it has been a great ride for the defense contractors.  Oh wait, I thought some of that money was supposed to "trickle down..."  Wasn\'t that another of Reagan\'s contributions of economic wisdom?

Reagan\'s economic wisdom led to Clinton\'s success.  If you think the economy was great because of Clinton then you have some thinking to do.

That has nothing to do with it.  We spent too much on our military, and did to little to help the poor and middle class during Clinton\'s terms as well.  In general, there is little difference between the republican and democratic presidents on this issue.  It\'s like two shades of grey... Clinton & Gore opposed deployment of the ridiculous Star Wars missile defense, whereas Bush wants it built as fast as possible, even if it can\'t be proven that it works.  HOWEVER, Clinton did not kill the program... the research continued under his term because he couldn\'t truly say no to any pork barrel defense contract.

We need to look at our military NEEDS a little more sanely.

Coredweller, remember that when Reagan pumped so much money in the military, we were "fighting" the Soviets and a war could have broken out at any time. the USSR also was pumping mass amounts of money into their military. If one side gained more superiority to the other, its curtains for the less advanced...if a war broke out.

I\'d say that the US made it out of the cold war just a tad better than the Russians.

But apprently the Russians made out alright since they were able to sell a lot of their weapons to Iraq.
