Title: Upgrade Part II
Post by: GigaShadow on March 31, 2003, 09:37:07 AM
I am going to build my own computer... I want to keep the price down and can use my current video card and monitor... what I am looking for are good sites on the internet where I can get a CPU, MB, Tower, RAM, DVD drive, CD RW, and HD.

Also does the MB and CPU come assembled?  I know you can buy them seperately, but I assume you can get them already put together.

Please post links to some good sites with good prices... thanks :D

I tend to use pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com/) when I look for expensive components online.  Don\'t go with the absolute cheapest on the list, look for a decent sized company with good webpage, shipping policy, and service.  You can save a lot if there is a bidding war at the time (when I got my 2.53, I got it about 140 cheaper than in a decent store locally, cause there were three companies on there having a little war).

sells mobo+cpu combos cheap

yer not really gonna find a place online that will sell you the cpu already inserted into the mobo.  they like you do it yerself, hoping you\'ll mess it up and have to buy another

Oh that is what I wanted to hear... what exactly is involved with putting a CPU on the MB?

Budget is around $600-800 - oh yeah forgot to mention, I don\'t need a sound card either - or speakers.  So all I need is CPU, MB, Case, RAM, DVD, CD RW, 3 1/2 floppy and a HD.  I have a 60 GB HD that I will use as a slave to the new HD.

intel - drop the CPU in the socket, place the heatsink/fan on top and lower the levers, done.  no tools needed.

AMD - drop the CPU in the socket, place the heatsink/fan on top then grab a screwdriver and PRAY TO BABY JESUS you do not crack the core while securing it, or the tabs break off the bracket.

i know souly will add something below this, but AMD installations ARE NOT for beginners.

mm I have to agree with you on this, it\'s always pissed me off the amd does protect the core with a heat spreader. Heck I know of alot of people whom have crack the amd core while trying to install a vapo chill unit...errrrr

I\'ve yet to see anyone do it.. ohh well. Must say something about yanks ;)  j/k.  But i agree, intel\'s socket design is better. But the sinks are a lot larger. So it has to be..

newegg should be your first place to look.   Always check the sites you are shopping from against the ratings on the site above.
