Title: Silent Hill 3 - dissapointment in store
Post by: Paul on May 04, 2003, 05:35:00 PM
Just some hands on time with SH3...those who was all hyped up about the hi-res graphics in this game..well, good and bad. the texture does seems more varied than the usual PS2 games (although I don\'t like the colour scheme as it was all too brownish...but I guess that\'s the artist direction)

The BAD news...the ridiculous "grain filter" from SH2 is back to mar the graphics...i don\'t really know why they still want to do that!!! Also, the animation of the main character isn\'t up to expectation...kinda stiff.

I haven\'t really play this game so no comment on the gameplay.

Anyway, it was a dissapointment.

It gives a "i\'m doing shitty graphics so I better grain it to hide the flaws" sense...

I believe the PC version of SH2 has the grain removed..(correct me if I\'m wrong).

I think it\'ll look 10 times better without the grain.

The PC/Xbox/PS2 Greatist Hits versions all had options that let you remove the grain.

I believe SH3 has that option as well.

But I think it\'s awesome.

Besides, the grain has been in most of the screenshots.

look you can switch the grain filter on and off in SH2 and i\'d imagine it will be the same with SH3, so quit yer bitchin\'.  SH3 had some of the best graphics on PS2 and SH3 looks like it is at least as good. show me one other title which has characters and faces that detailed in game. most games put better graphics in the enviroment and forget about character models, so they come out blocky or just bland, with SH2 and 3, you can the wrinkles on people\'s faces. the only other games with models this detailed were Shenmue 1&2 on the dreamcast and xbox.
i like the grain as well, it makes it feel less like a video game and more like a film.

:o Ugh... The game is getting 90 + scrores in magazines as we speak. Also, like all others here, the grain really adds in a positive
way. Yes, without it the engine looks really good too. LOL can\'t imagine it took a step backwards after SH2  . This is not a crystal clear horror themed action game like DMC, SH3 is like all SH games about style and atmosphere and getting into ppl\'s miinds. Such a in progress demo in a shop won\'t do it justice. You gotta play the final product late at night in a low lit room.

Wrinkles?? err...that\'s only in the cutscene which looks like FMV.

And no, I don\'t see any grain filter...i don\'t believe there was one in SH2(PS2 version) either. And it doesn\'t feel more like a film...just a very grainy looking game...reminds me of oatmeal and wheat bread or something..Ha!

I thought this game was still a fair way off before release.

Racer: Sorry to inform you, the game looks nothing like all those hi-res screenshot floating the net...i think this is one of the biggest "fake hi-res pic" promotion game of recent times. Not one bit of the game looks anything like those pics. Everything is grainy.

And I\'m quite sure those cut scenes are FMV...and even those have to be grainy!!!!

It\'s the biggest hype in recent memories.

The grain filter can be switched on and off - also, word is, there\'s an option to enable soft and sharp look (like in Tekken 4).

You\'re judging the game because of the "grain-filter" that you obviously dislike...

hmmmmmmmm, i liked the grain filter, added atmosphere to it, i know someo one who played it a while ago, he said it was v impresive, but it was at some computer show, and he couldnt hear it properly,  etc, so couldnt soak up the atmosphere.. so only played it for a bit

:o  Paul, you obviously don\'t like SH style, so why don\'t you go play RE or that Tecmo Clocktower 3 game (or whatever it\'s name is). If that ain\'t enough I think ye gotta wait for that new Sony Horror game which looks rather sharp. Bashing SH3 ain\'t gonna help anybody.

Don\'t listen to this guy. I cannot believe some of his comments... SH3 is clearly the best looking game on PS2 as far as the \'realistic look goes.

a) It\'s literally almost like those high-res screens, only animated (and it\'s by far the best facial animation I\'ve ever seen in a realtime engine). Aliasing is kept at minimum as much as it\'s humanly possible in a videogame on a regular TV screen. Quite a nice step up from SH2, actually, as the small flickering it had sometimes is completely eliminated here. Sure, it\'s not *as* antialiased as those screens, but *nothing* really is.

b) Grain filter looks awesome - better and more controlled than in SH2, looks more like a film grain used in theatrical movies (I guess it\'s used there too to \'hide visual flaws\' ;). For those who don\'t like it, there is an option to disable it. There\'s absolutely nothing wrong with the graphics when it\'s disabled, it just more clear looking, and loses that special \'gritty\' look.

c) I love when people say graphics are disappointment, but cannot believe cut scenes are not pre-rendered. Well, cut scenes are ALL real-time in SH3, and clearly use in-game engine, as the lighting and shadowing look exactly the same. They maybe use more complex character models, but it\'s kinda impossible to tell since you never see models upclose during the gameplay.

Overall, graphics are exactly what they are hyped up to be. Definitely the best realistic looking graphics on PS2 (\'realistic\' category excludes games like ZOE2).

The only negative thing I\'ve heard, is that thee free-look camera option has been removed, or at least didn\'t feature in near-finished code... I love taking in every grimy detail..

Out this months, out this month, ooo... *droool*

Wow! Mr Retardo, FYI, I never bother to play SH2(coz it\'s so crap) so obviously, I never beat the game. HA! HA! And to think you can only turn off the grain AFTER you\'ve gone through the ordeal in grainy mode...no thanks.

(a) Yes, I do agreed SH3 is like 200% improvement over SH2...because SH2 is just plain shitty ugly like a PSX game.

(b) That\'s your opinion. Remember, one man\'s meat another\'s poison. I\'ll give anything for clean crisp graphics anyday.

(c) I love it even better when people say all the movies ARE real-time when they don\'t have any proof either. "Exactly the same" as the in-game graphics?? Mua! Haaa! Haaa! Are u the Joker\'s long lost son??

You CAN disable grain filter even from the beginning.

Where is that giant rolleyes icon when you need it. SH2 was one of the most technically impressive games when it was released (awesome lighting and texturing) Also, it\'s art quality was second to none.

What proof do you need?

I have:

a) Developers words on it.
b) A lot of experience in recognizing things like that.

First of all there are no compression artifacts whatsoever.

Second, there is standard realtime graphics aliasing visible, that has never been present in pre-rendered videos.

Third, lighting and shadowing method is clearly the same as during the gameplay. You can see small shadowing artifacts in some scenes (such as whitish halo around her body because of realtime shadow calculation imperfections)

Fourth, you can clearly see that textures are not always perfect quality like you\'d expect in pre-rendered videos.

Fifth, if you change soft/sharp and noise on/of option in the options menu, cut scenes will be afected by those just as much as gameplay graphics. If the cut scenes were pre-rendered that would be impossible to happen.

Basically, cut scenes use *exactly the same* environments, lighting and shadowing algorithm as used in game and *maybe* use higher poly versions of character models. To anyone that has any experience with such things, it\'s clear as day that cut scenes are indeed realtime graphics. But if you\'ve been one of those who insisted cut scenes in MGS2 were also pre-rendered until someone told you you can move the camera around while watching them, I can understand that you couldn\'t tell it\'s also realtime here.

I have no hands on experience with this game, so I\'m only guessing, but maybe the cut-scene\'s are done the way it\'s done in tekken 4. You know, use the ingame engine to make them, and then touch them up a bit. Again, I\'m only guessing, no flaming please

I know what you are saying, but it\'s just not the case here. It\'s very, very obviously running on the realtime engine.

This has to be the funniest thread I\'ve seen.  The stupid demo is on the new Summer Jampak so people can see it whenever they want.

The grain filter can be disabled whenever you want (at least in the demo), and the cinemas are all REALTIME, not only because Konami has said so numerous times, but its quite obvious when you look at them during the game too.

And why wouldn\'t I? PS2 and Xbox versions were nigh identical except that Xbox version used per-pixel lighting on static geometry and vertex lighting on movable objects, while PS2 version used vertex lighting on everything.

That game had by far best textures on the PS2 at the time it was released, and it had by far best lighting and shadowing of any game on any platform. Need I remind you that it had an engine where almost everything casted *soft* shadows on everything else? Althought they improved even the shadowing engine in the SH3, it was pretty damn impressive in SH2 back then when it was released, because there was nothing like it on the market. It was *much* later that John Carmack started boasting about that same feature in his Doom 3 engine, and D3 doesn\'t even have soft shadows, but has razorsharp, often completely black and unnatural looking ones.

It\'s your opinion if you didn\'t liked the look of the game, but technically it was certainly ahead in many aspects from other offerings back then.

Well, I must agree.  SH2 was indeed ahead of its time, we just don\'t think of it like that.  Come on, thats like saying Star Wars has bad special effects, when indeed that game was setting the stage for other movies.

I have got the game today and it looks fantastic. The noise effect can be disabled from the start and the is also an option to sharpen the picture too. I haven\'t got very far yet but it sure looks good.

The PAL version has a 60hz mode too!
