Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas were heavily damaged earlier this week in one of the most intense outbreaks of tornadoes in 53 years of record-keeping.
Officials have recorded 135 tornadoes for the week since Sunday. More than 40 people have been killed in the non-stop storms.
All these tornado pics of damage strike close to home for me, being born and rased in Kansas City Missouri. I\'m just glad i\'m in an area now that dosen\'t get tornadoes.

I live in Kentucky and was surprised by all the action we have received as of late. One day I was at work and evaculated to a shelter, the next night we didn\'t have electric most the time and then one mornin\' I woke up to find limbs and branches all over the roads. Very scarey stuff, as we don\'t see storms like this often.

Back in my news days I flew all day in a chopper over Panama City area after Hurricane Opal. I remember all the typicla things like boats in the middle of the road, roofs off, etc....
But one thing has always stuck in my mind. I remember flying over an area on the beach thinking how beautiful it must be because there weren\'t really any houses. I mean it was a mess at the time, but it was really nice. Then I noticed under the sand were concrete slabs. There use to be houses there. It was quite a bit of beach leveled.
I also remember a whole wall gone and I had footage of a guy sweeping in his upstairs bedroom with no roof and no wall.
I remember seeing an entire house in the middle of a lake. It was in three pieces. Absolutely amazing.

Not as much as you do.

Touche.

Is it me or in USA houses are made of cartoon?
-
Cartoon? Hmmm. You mean cartons? LIke milk cartons?
Not a whole lot of houses will take winds over a couple hundred miles per hour.
-
quite frankly, i think even if the houses were made out of bricks they still would\'nt be able to stand up to the wind speeds generated.
-
there are houses in my village that would be right after a 10 point earthquake. Their walls are made up heavy stone, and wide as hell (some, more than 1 metre). I think that wood is not the right material to build houses where this kinda winds occurs.
-
I was pushing carts during this tornado siren. We all seen the clouds start rotating in a funnel forming like fashion. We decided to hull ass back inside and take cover. It was very frighting....you kinda almost feel weakless.

Not a lot of houses are made of stone in America. Wood seems to be the material of choice.

Not worth the cost building each house with 3 foot of stone for exterior walls. Most would probably rather play the odds, especially when your chances of being in a Tornado are still pretty low even if your in Kansas.
-
Bozco you mean that you prefer to build a house of wood instead of stone (and avoiding this way the collapse down of the house in case of twister) for the cost?
-
In California, pretty much the earthquake capital of the world aside from Japan, particularly in San Francisco, a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo costs well over $500,000 and that\'s probably of the cheapest materials known to man. I\'m sorry that you think the risk isn\'t worth taking, but some people just can\'t afford it. We\'d rather take our chances, It\'s just that simple.

As Ryu said, most all would rather play the game of chance. And the chances still are heavily in your favor that you won\'t get hit.
