Title: Resident Evil sequel in the pipeline

Kit, Zorianna. "\'Evil 2\' prevails with Jovovich; Witt set to helm." The Hollywood Reporter 4/24/03.

Screen Gems and Constantin Film are going forward on a sequel to last year\'s action thriller "Resident Evil," with the film\'s star Milla Jovovich reprising her role and second-unit director Alexander Witt making his feature film directing debut on the project. Production will begin in August in Toronto.

Like the original, "Resident Evil 2" will be based on the video game series. It will pick up where the last film left off, with Jovovich reprising her role as Alice, who is left to search for ways to contain a deadly viral outbreak while trying to escape the ruined Raccoon City with fellow survivors. Paul S. Anderson, who wrote and directed the first installment of "Evil," wrote the script for the sequel and will produce along with his Impact Pictures partner Jeremy Bolt as well as Bernd Eichinger of Constantin Film and Sam Hadida of Davis Films.

"We\'re all thrilled that Milla will return for what we know will be an incredibly exciting sequel," Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper said. "And I know that she _ along with Paul, Jeremy and all our friends at Constantin and Davis _ shares our enthusiasm for the visual talents of Alexander Witt and his unique vision for Paul\'s script. Alexander has been extremely selective in choosing his feature debut, and we are beyond excited to be working with him. He\'s just the perfect guy for the job."

Screen Gems senior vp acquisitions Benedict Carver brought in the project and will oversee the production for the studio.

Witt, repped by Paradigm and manager Nikki Grosso, has directed the second units on such films as "Daredevil," "XXX," "Black Hawk Down" and "Hannibal."

Jovovich is repped by ICM, Industry Entertainment and attorney Steve Warren. Impact Pictures, a Constantin subsidiary, is represented by ICM.

Senior vp business affairs Gary Hirsch negotiated the deal on behalf of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

I saw this article a couple weeks ago, but didn\'t bother to post it.  I had not seen the first Resident Evil film, but I saw it last night on HBO HD.  As I recall, most of you tore up this movie after it was released.  Now I\'m trying to remember what you didn\'t like about it.

I thought it was pretty good.  OK, it\'s no brilliant work of cinema, and definitely not very thought provoking, but as a simple action film, I think it\'s rather effective.  Also, as an opportunity to stare at Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez for 90 minutes, I don\'t see how you can beat it.  What did you not like about it?

What\'s your opinion on the sequel?

Out of all the recent videogame to movie translations, I thought RE was the best. It didn\'t follow the RE storyline, so it wasn\'t held to an certain storyline . Yet, it still had nods and what not to fans of the series.

Not a brilliant movie, but it was good.

Take away the Umbrella name and all you got is a cheesy zombie movie...

*Spoilers*

Where were the STARS?

Tyrant?

Milla Jovovich using martial arts on the undead???

Half the combat team got wasted in a single scene...

Average but needs improvement...

Yeah, everything you said about it indicates that you were expecting them to transport the entire game directly into a movie.  I think it\'s your expectations that were off, not the movie.  It\'s an effective action film on it\'s own terms.  The improvements I would have suggested would not involve making it more like the game.  I think that would have made it worse.

Some people need to realize this is off-topic and not 1942 in Germany during the Nazi rule. Relax, Coredweller.

I\'m perfectly relaxed.

You do have more of a right to tell me to "Shut the fuck up" now than you would have had under the Nazis, I\'ll grant you that...  :)  However I doubt John Lennon would have said something like that.  That\'s my only point.

I thought the movie was great. They made it so more believable, having them as FBI agents then as STARS, otherwise it would just seem really, really far fetched (more so then it already is).

Geeez, they had;

*The T virus
*Hunters (Tyrants come later I believe)
*Umbrella Corp
*Racoon City
*Millions of zombies
*Awesome mansion

And it had a killer techno soundtrack. I thought the visual style was brilliant and fit the movie perfectly. Everything seemed very clean and cold, and had a real sleek style.

Sure, the middle half of the movie sucked, but I think the first 20 mins and the last 20 mins were really good. The end was supurb, and left me wanting more. I wanted her to just keep going around Racoon City kicking undead ass.

Best game movie ever.

You liked Glitter...therefore your opinion on movies means nothing.

And RE was the best game movie ever, and it still sucked.

yea, its hardly hard to make the best movie from a game is it. i mean you have to compete with the likes of super mario bros, mortal kombat, and re etc etc...

Doods, Glitter was CRAP, I just liked it cause Mariah Carey was in it.

Its pretty funny though how you all seem to be pretty educated about Glitter... Looks as though I wasn\'t the only that saw it.

Exactly which is why Miss Carey\'s venture into the world of films was a short lived one..... THANK GOD :D.....

RE movie was dumb.

You guys should watch "Night of the Living Dead" - John Romero.

"28 Days Later" should be a much better movie than RE.

Was it scary? Like REALLY scary? Night of the Living Dead scared me for the next three months, being a kid at the time.

The movie was directered amateurishly me thinks.I was disapointed by the movie. The concept was good. But the director didnt know how to build the sense of tension into the movie.Even the zombies looked more like brainless vampires from Blade than zombies.
For me it was as if I was watching an episode of a series like buffy the vampire or something than a 1 and a half hour movie.

I can\'t really wait for the next Resident Evil movie! Given that I liked the first one.

Yes, Resident Evil 1 is NOT a great movie by ANY stretch of the imagination. As for its connection to the game, true, it didn\'t follow any of the games. Then again, if it did, then we would probably get tons of complaints that it didn\'t do this or that right. So not having this movie directly connected to the games adds to the enjoyment since my bias against certain aspects are not there.

There is a connection though. The movie\'s story is placed in a different place at a different time.

Well yes and no. Yes, if they wanted it to be in the canon, it can fit. And yes, things like Umbrella and lickers are connected to the game in a way. However, with plotholes here and there if you tried that (also, you have to believe that there are two [or is it 3 with Resident Evil Zero?] mansions) it works as a standalone as well.

The second one, will be more connected with the game as Jill Valentine is in it (takes place during Nemesis).

Did you say "John Romero"? It\'s George Romero.  *shakes head*

(*prefers the original over the remake of NOTLD,  but the remake is equally good. * )

And you guys forget that the RE was not meant to be scarey. It wasn an action flick , with zombies. Big difference. Having zombies does not make it a horror film, otherwise Return of the Living Dead would be a horror film and we all know it isn\'t.

^

I hate it when people thing- vampires, zombies or the undead related- it automatically is horror. People arent very genre-savy now a days

I didnt read the whole thing. Why? Cause the first was basically a movie you watch and forget about 2 hours after. I just rented the DVD. Not the best, but decent. The second could be good. But not great.
