ORLANDO, Fla. - A Muslim woman suing to keep her veil on for her driver\'s license photo took the stand Tuesday, saying Florida\'s insistence on photographing her face violates her religious rights.
"I don\'t unveil ... because it would be disobeying my Lord," said Sultaana Freeman, 35.
Both sides planned to call experts in Islamic law at the nonjury trial, which was to continue Wednesday. A copy of the Quran was entered into evidence.
Freeman, a convert to Islam previously known as Sandra Kellar, wore her veil for the photo on the Florida driver\'s license she obtained after moving to the state in 2001.
Nine months later, she received a letter from the state warning that it would revoke her license unless she returned for a photo with her face uncovered.
Freeman claims her religious beliefs require her to keep her head and face covered out of modesty and that her faith prohibits her face from being photographed.
Her attorneys argued that state officials didn\'t care that she wore a veil in the photo until after the Sept. 11 attacks, an allegation the state denies.
"This is about religious liberty. It\'s about whether this country is going to have religious diversity," said Howard Marks, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites) of Florida.
Assistant Attorney General Jason Vail argued that having an easily identifiable photo on a driver\'s license is a matter of public safety.
"It\'s the primary method of identification in Florida and the nation," Vail said. "I don\'t think there can be any doubt there is a public safety interest."

I say - fine. You don\'t want to take off your veil for IDENTIFICATION (notice the bold letters?)??? You can walk to work and use cash only since you have no driver\'s license for driving and using personal checks (and sometimes credit cards).
Hell, can you even go into a bank?

she could just put on a head scarf, which is more than sufficient.
we had a similar case overhere, in which a couple of women said that they wouldnt take off their veils for their licences or while driving, i beleive they got their licences revoked.

hey with the vail on those inderagers could get into bars :-) but alas that also why its wrong how they hell can you identify who you are...

In Bahrain? Do you mind if I quote you on this at another forum?

not at all.
just to be clearer, women in Bahrain are banned from driving a car while wearing a veil.

Ah, it would be more fun, if you had said:

I say deport her.

I thought that the veil wasn\'t required to be worn under islamic law.
-
I believe it is actually- either way I think that this is an unbeatable/unwinnable/unloseable etc situation.
either way no one can win, or lose. Why dont they accept it? Beats me.
Anyway: How did she get a photo of herself on her liscense if she cant take of her veil anyway????!!!?

Chick is a freak. She has prior arrests for beating up her kid.
The DMV went out of their way to get a picture of her in privacy and she is a freak. She had a spouse with over 20 IDs with different names. This is a big scam and she is abusing the system.

She\'s American.

She\'s like what americans call a tv set that goes five years without need of repair. a import. ;)

on cnn.com they had a side note showing Islamic countries policies on this. Not one country allowed women to appear veiled in photo I.D.\'s. Saudi Arabia doesn\'t even allow women to drive.
I say this broad should be sent a bill for all the taxpayer\'s money she is wasting with this ridiculous lawsuit.
BTW- her former name is Sandra Keller. She changed it to Sultana Freeman!?!? Both names sound more Jewish than Arabic.
