I was curious, Can you capture video from Hi 8 directly into after effects? Juslight and I are working on a video project, and I need to find the best way to capture my clips. I was messing around with my camera last night, (And after a few hours of pissing around) and ended up loging and capturing in premier.
The MAJOR problem I had was trying to simply save each idividual clip as a seperate file. If I tried to save the clip, I had the option of saving the video or the audio, but not both at the same time. I ended up having to export each clip as a movie by pulling each clip in the timeline, one by one.
Is there an easier way to capture my video (from my video camera) as a clip, so I can open it in after effects as a standard NTSC???

Best way that I can do it is capture in Avid (Or premiere as you are doing it) and export the video out as a TARGA SEQUENCE. It will be 30 individual pics for each second of video.
Then import the targa sequence into AE.

Thanks man...

That was friggin awesome! haha. Were working on something like that.... There wont be any 3d animation in it though.

I\'m working on a video for my kid of our Sea World vacation. I made a 30 second open in it that\'s pretty cute. THe whole video is 20 minutes long, but when I get the open done I will upload a bit.

sweet man. Yeah, We\'re working on a video entitled "Magniferific Man". Its a mocumentary.. some cool effects, cheesy acting. The whole bit. Should be funny as hell though.
-
Um... how the hell did you capture the Hi8 footage in the first place?? I\'m guessing you have a capture board of some kind.
-
If you have a video camera with firewire you can input the video into the video camera through patch cords and then use the camera as a transcoder. Camera sends the video right to the computer through the firewire without even having to make a dub to DV first.
At least that\'s what I did with some of my old footage.
-
Hi8 is analog no firewire there. :( Those cameras are old anyway, MPTheory for your next video I recommend investing in a MiniDV cam with a high pixel count (more than 640k). Capturing to computer is super easy as Vid pointed out, not to mention a pure digital transfer of your footage.
If Targa doesn\'t work good and you have a lot of HD space try the Huffyuv codec which is raw YUV so Premiere/After FX loves it. Just run a search for it, it\'s free. btw- what capture card you guys using?
-
I Am transfering with DV. My camera isnt analog. It\'s Digital... I\'ll post a link of the finished product in a few weeks.
BTW, Im not using a capture card. I\'m simply transfering from Firewire. I was never having a problem capturing my video, just wanted to know the best means of getting it to After effects If I couldnt capture directly into it. Ive Got it figured out now. Ive already watched some on my TV to make sure it looks alright after adding the effects.

... So it\'s not Hi8? Or it\'s a Hi8 camera with Firewire? Never heard of those... unless you mean D8.
-
There is no Hi-8 with firewire. you are right sambone, it would have to be a D8 which is just a digital camera with hi-8 tape.
-
Digital8/HI8...
I use video Hi8 and Digital formatted tapes.

Yeah, exactly. It\'s digital, but it prints on Hi-8 tape. It\'s essentially the same thing as a MiniDV, but different tape.

yup...Fun stuff.. good times, good times.
