Very smart move by Sony. They are not going head to head with Nintendo directly but indirectly. Sly move.
I like this :
Deering specifically mentioned movies when talking about region codes, and went out of his way to point out that there would be no differences between devices in PAL and NTSC regions, so it may be that region coding is being dropped entirely for games on the system.

Well, 2B honest.... i didn\'t use my GBA much until recently when I was abroad, on vacation in Italy. When not on vacation GBA playtime was (when it occured ;) ) only at home, not on the train, bus, school or any other place than my house. This is fairly much the user profile Sony\'s PSP is aiming for
Anyway, I\'m surprised by the hint at the possibilty of PSP packing the punchpower of a PS2, like the article says ; a portable PSX.
-
OK, I may be totally stupid, but was this not just discussed like 2 days ago? WHere is the old thread?
-
I looked for it. If there is one, the subject heading isn\'t as obvious as mine. Besides, the article is fairly recent - 19/06/03 (that\'s European standard, day month and year ;) )
-
what does sony gain from the PSP not being region specific? Isn\'t the GBA that way too?
-
Somewhere in between what??? I guessing the only reason theyre saying it wouldnt be something carried around the childrens schoolyard is because of the price. It will probably be the same price as a PS2... I wouldnt doubt it. Hell, Id probably buy that before I bought the PSX though. Who knows how much that things gonna cost.

*yawn*
The only thing I care about is if Sony is goin\' to push 3D for handhelds, if they do, I will hate them more than ever. Nintendo has proven that 2D gaming is still the way to go with handhelds. You can\'t have such great games as the CastleVania series , Advance Wars , Golden Sun and more in 3D.
In Short: PSP + 3D Games = Me vomiting .
-
So 3D games can\'t be good?
And why hate Sony? It\'s the developers that will choose wether they go 2D or 3D. Sure you could blame Sony for making PSP powerful enough for good 3D, but that\'s just taking it too far.
-
;) Exactly Echo. And Sony already stated that most PSP games will be fairly cheap at $ 20- 30. Also, keep in mind that they might
have learned alot from compressing the PS2 tech onto 1 single chip which reduces costs ; this may result in a competitive PSP hardware pricing too. And about handheld hardware offering 3D graphics ; saying that is bad perse is comparable to saying cdrom based games are inferior to cartbased games becuz of loading times...... ( N64 - PSone  )
-
As long as PSP gets games that are good to play on the move or just at any time you feel like it then it\'ll be a good handheld.

This will be very entertaining for me to see you vomit.

Obviously, Echo does not remember when the original PSone came out and Sony refused to allow 2D games on the system for the longest time. I have a feeling they will do this with the PSP.

Ok well if they are pushing for 3d that doesnt mean great games have to be converted to 3d. Thats a poor assumption or bad wording. Personally i think it would be nice to have 3d on a handheld, depending on how its pulled off. Anyway, i do love 2d games and always will. I still live for 2d fighters and play genesis, nintendo, and snes almost every other day.

Do me a favor and think before you post.
If you had a clue, you would remember when the Psone came out that Sony refused to let developers put 2D games on it. Infact, I believe the first 2D game was Street Fighter Alpha and that was almost a year and half into the PSone\'s lifespan.
We don\'t need 3D handheld games.

I don\'t why there\'s an argument here. It can do both 2D and 3D. If it has dual shock, it can function as a portable massager too.

Thank you.
In actuality we dont need videogames at all. Of course we would hate that but thats a little farfetched.

I wouldn\'t mind 3D or 2D handheld, but the way i see it, the LCD screen is just too small for decent hi-res 3D..what\'s the max resolution of the GBA and PSP anyway? I think it\'s very difficult to cram so much 3D info onto such a small screen without either:
(1) looking jaggy and blocky
(2) Hurt your eyes with the smaller objects
Still, it\'ll be interesting what they can come up with. Perhaps a compromise of 2.5D ala Crash Bandicoot games will be more feasible.

Maybe SONY can sell some add on like becoming a portable shaver, toaster, fan, torchlight etc etc...hee-hee. Imagine...you can toast a bread as you play on it!! How cool!

WHAT DOES THE DAMN THING LOOK LIKE?!

I have the 4 inch LCD screen for the PS-One and 3D games look fine. Actually better. I was able to play Poy-Poy, Metal Gear Solid and Colin McRae 2.

I think 3d is doable but what saddens me is that they are not trying to compete on the same level as the GBA. Sure they want to be somewhere in the middle of everything but why not compete in more than one slot, (i know this sounds typical of sony anyway right?). If they lowered the price and raised the standards for handheld gaming they might be able slowly diffuse through nintendos reign.
I guess those aspirations are a little far off and maybe sony is happy to compete in the middle, but my question is, is there really a middle at all? I mean the only people to buy it are exremely loyal fans and those multimedia buffs with the money to afford it. And if thats the case will they really be puchasing the boatload of games that sony tends to have on their consoles? Meh. I guess it all depends on the pricing.
