Title: OK, now I am hosed
Post by: videoholic on June 21, 2003, 03:12:08 PM
OK, this just started happening today.

I GET WINDOWS POPPING UP CONSTANTLY!!!

I can have nothing running, leave the computer, come back 5 minutes later and there will be at least 4 windows open.

They are constantly opening.

also now my windows installer is screwed up so I can\'t install software that uses it.

My EZ CD 6 is screwed up so I can\'t burn CDs.  I was going to reinstall it and that is when I found out the windows installer is screwed up.

I can\'t find anywhere to download installer.  I found windows installer for older versions of the OS, but not XP.

I may just reinstall XP and say screw it.

I see system resotre in the control panel and it just says that it is monitoring the drives.  How do I get it to revert to an old setting?

And I think the installer may just be messed up for EZCD.

But these popups are driving me insane.  Adaware and spybot both find crap every time I run them.  very very annoying

It\'s the same ones over and over again.

counter.com which redirects to several including search-4u, searchtheusa and myfirstsearch

and a couple others I don\'t remember

This seems to be the main culprit.  ANy way for me to search for this thing and why it triggers every couple minutes.

Pop-ups are usually from spyware.  If Ad-aware AND Spybot don\'t find anything, could you possibly have a virus?  Check for free here:

14 instances of winpup32 trojan virus in my temporary internet files folder.

I must have just gotten it yesterday because this is the first time I have woken up and had 32 popups on my screen.

Now I have quarentined the virus, hopefully I can get rid of it without doing much work.

I haven\'t had a pop up in over ten minutes so I think the quarentine may be working.

I\'ve heard of this (or something similar) before, someone told me that he couldn\'t delete it, and antivirus software couldn\'t get rid of it either, in the end, all he could do was reset his PC to the factory settings.

What soul said... Disable the Windows Messenger service.  It is in your control panel under admin tools/services/messenger - click on properties to disable it.  Everyone should do that... as for your problem - nasty virus there what AV are you using?

Do you know how you got the virus?

Was it in an e-mail or did you get it from a downloaded file?

I really have no idea.  I doubt if I got it from email because I monitor every piece of email that comes in.  I probably got it off of either usenet or something from virtually any website.

It is brutal.  It is impossible to do anything because popups happen every minute or so.  Every time I leave the computer I have 30 windows open.

I absolutely can not delete those files and they are on my E drive which I do not want to format.  I have a couple hundred gigs of open space to move to a firewire drive, but what a pain.  I guess I am going to have to do it.

I was gone for a couple hours.  nothing running on the computer.

I come home to 30 windows open and I just ran ad-aware again.  Lovely.

I\'m going to be a startin over hopefully tonight if I can get everything together to do it.

Update all your anti-virus and anti-spyware software.  Boot in safe mode and try deleting the certain file that you think is causing problems.  Then run all of your apps while in safemode.

If nothing happens f*ck it and re-install Windows.

I have uninstalled Memorymeter and some safewasher or something now 6 times in the past 4 or 5 hours.  IT keeps on reinstallingitself.

My only problem with reformatting everything is I really want to format my E: drive and that is where my video project is.  I\'m going to see what I can do with moving it, but dang, what a pain in the booty.

I\'ll try to boot in safemode and see what happens.

Other than the AV, and spyware proggies, seriously consider the pop-up stopper as a cure for the symptoms... so you can at least leave your computer for a few min at a time.

(sorry).

well I am fresh now.  Good thing about formatting and starting over is the system runs faster.

If you have multiple HDDs, you can aslo just leave all your games/apps/OS on one hard drive.. that way you are always free to wipe-reinstall without loosing your music, movies, files, projects, etc (which you keep on your other HDDs).

Yeah, I have backups of everything.  It\'s really easy for me to redo everything.  It\'s just not fun.
