Which series do u prefer and why?
Personally I prefer the SH series for the following reasons:
1.Unlike Resident Evil every Silent Hill features a plot with mistery. You dont know whats going on on the sequels because of the first. In Resident Evil the first one\'s plot was amazing at first because it raised questions and mystery. The story was still a maiden. But after u find out ,it was all thanks to Umbrella experimenting on creating the ultimate biological weapon and a terrible accident that went things out of control the story exists only as an excuse for the existence of sequels. You automatically know 3/4 of the Sequels\' plot. Each SH though maintains a freshness.
2.The controls are a lot more comfortable.
3.You identify with the character. In the Residen Evil series we observe the character and as observers we understand a tragic irony(we know things the protagonist doesn\'t) if there is any.In Silent Hill you play the role of the tragic character. You meet characters in the game that play a significant part in the plot but the game never reveals what that is.It makes you wonder. It forces you to make your own conclusions for the tragic irony you dont know about. For example as Harry you never know the connection of your "daughter" with the town and you dont know your integral importance into Dahlia\'s plans. Also you can only assume about Kauffman\'s almost unrevealed role in the game and his past as well as other characters\'.
4.Similarly to the 3rd reason I prefer SH is that the story isnt appeared just like that. Its not a one way approach. An approach the writer of the story wants you to see.Istead of making u see it just like the director\'s approach it lets you approach it the way YOU see it.
Its like comparing the Resident Evil movie with The Ring.
5.The Horror.SH plays with your own fears and subconciousness.
6.The sound. No other game reaches SH in terms of sound. Its a work of art.
-
I voted for Silent Hill.
The graphics, atmosphere and music/sound effects are above anything else in it\'s genre IMO.
-
RE> SH.
Silent Hill is a boring foggy mess.

Oh.You are right. Why dont we remove that one too then :D

Resident Evil ... ugh. That series needs to die.
In the survival horror genre it\'s the atmosphere that is most important, and Silent Hill simply dwarfs puny RE in that category. At least in SH you feel as though you are controlling a character who is trying to survive the horror.

As apposed to what?
I didnt vote because honestly i dont know. See it really depends on where you are coming from. The RE series is... how should i put this, more of a threaded conpiracy whereas SH is more supernatural than RE in some sense. RE was a breakthrough game and i think it remained fairly good until code veronica. 3 was ok but 1-2 (and the directors cuts) were great. I do like both but I think the reason that People begin to hate RE is because Capcom is milking it for every penny they can suck out of it. Whilst SH remains pure and most importantly, innovative.
Well to make it short this about waps up my 2 cents for now, so i dont vote.
-
i would of said re b4, i use to lve the whole series, but, the sequels he never been as good as th original one...... but now im gona say sh, i prefer the story, and the whoe game to be honest

Silent Hill, definitely.
I absolutely loved Resident Evil, liked Resident Evil 2, thought number 3 was crap and ended up selling it before finishing it (very rare in my case), managed to get through CV because I couldn\'t get enough of the crappy acting (crappy being a word too subtle to use here, really). Got Resident Evil 0 and thought it would be more like the original and get me hooked on the series again, bah.
Silent Hill, then, has just gotten better and better. The original rocked my world, number 2 wasn\'t as creepy, but just as gripping, and number three just took me by the scruff of my neck, shook me about and convinced me that the team behind the series is a bunch of (sick) gurus who deserve my utmost respect.
In detail :
Locations :
Resident Evil : Mansions, secret laboratories, military complexes, nothing that really hasn\'t been seen somewhere else a million times. It\'s basic and familiar, so maybe that\'s why many people like it.
Silent Hill : A town. A secluded town with a murky history. Sure, we\'ve seen almost all the locations that are featured before too, but the duality of the place, all the little details and the history that is uncovered along the way really puts many other fictional settings to shame. Most of the locations are everyday places, so that in a way brings the horror closer to you.
Mood :
Resident evil : "BOO! I\'m zombie, me eat brain! You have brain? Graar!"
Silent Hill : "What the hell was that sound? ... I want to get the heck outta here..."
Gameplay :
I just find it funny that a bunch of civilians seem to be more adept at fighting than highly-trained special forces, but then again, they\'re games by different companies. Much of Resident Evil\'s horror (? panic, more like) to me consists of the fact the you\'re controlling a really, really clumsy dummy.
Sound/Presentation :
Resident Evil : Crappy acting for most of the games, zombie sounds like you\'d imagine them, slimy noises, moody background music. Nothing surprising. Some of the monster designs were pretty cool (in RE2 at least). RE0 had pretty graphics too, I guess...
Silent Hill : Surprisingly good acting (save for a few characters), loud static, hellish noises all around, silence, footsteps upstairs, silence, all hell breaks loose, great music. Best sound desing in any game series ever. The monsters are odd, and sometimes too strange to be really scary, but they all are the way they are for a reason, which brings me to the fact that most intrigues me in SH; there\'re dozens and dozens of little details and aspects with hidden (or obvious) meanings related to the stories. But still, there\'s a bit too much fog to go around, at least in SH3, eep. There\'s wasn\'t much of it though, thankfully.
Etcetc... Hawky luvs his SH.

silent hill > resident evil
and the poll proves this
-
Silent Hill is a Resident Evil ripoff.
There is just something about Resident Evil that leaves me so intrigued. I love the whole biohazard concept, and I know its been done before in movies etc, but its the first real game I ever played that really scared the hell outta me.
I think Resident Evil Code Veronica on Dreamcast was one of the best RE games. The puzzles were more interesting, it was bloodier and had much better graphics. Silent Hill to me doesn\'t make sense, I still don\'t fully understand what its all about. Like, the first one was about a car accident or something, and no its like WTF?

that about sums it up! :)

I hardly think this poll proves anything. You would need to look up indiviual sales for each title. I\'m to lazy to look and honestly I don\'t know which one is selling more.
-shrugs-
-
yea, but u could argue re sells more, not becouse of its a etter game, but t is actually a nore wel know name..... just like when fifa outsells pro evoulution soccer, even though pro evo is a much better game
-
how is silent hill a RE ripoff?
i dun see any secret factory producing zombies by toxic chemicals in SH
SH will always possess something RE doesnt, it\'s called depth of story
-
What point would sales numbers prove when this poll asks you which series you prefer? oO And of course RE games will sell more, as kopking noted, because Capcom markets them so much more than Konami ever does with Silent Hill titles.
Silent Hill is a Resident Evil ripoff? Haha...
Hawke did an excellent job summarizing the difference in the two.

My point was simple. This poll hardly gives an idea of what series is more popular. Not enough people.
And we all know sales is king. -shrugs-
-
RE series has 3 great games
SH series has 2 great games
RE wins.
:)
-
SH.. beacuse Resident evil is the Tomb raider of the Horror games.
oh and them RE light gun makes just adds to the crapness.

And we all know sales is king.
this is like saying harry potter is better than lord of the rings

Not to mention also because RE is easier to adapt to because its more action oriented.Shotguns,Bazookas, Usis, Explosives etc and AMMO EVERYWHERE!!Zombies you are ALL GONNA DIE!!

There are like....what?7 Resident Evils(excluding the light gun series and the directors cut)?
But there are only 3 Silent Hills. all great only SH 2 loses a bit because of its more confusing storyline and with a little less surprises.

But the number that have been made is irrelevant. The question is which series is better. Resident Evil has a higher number of good (better) games in it\'s series, thus, I prefer it more.
And the storyline was the only good thing about SH2.
this is like saying harry potter is better than lord of the rings
L-I-C was being ironic.. given that you\'re the one who usually says that line.

The more sequels there are in a series the more chances there are to get a higher number of goog sequels unlike a series with 2 or 3 sequels.
The real challenge for a developer is to make only a few and make them all good.

And the more sequals you make, the more chance there is of making bad games. Actually, that\'s probably a much more accurate way of stating it, given that the more sequals to a series you make, the more chance there is that people will get tired of it. Let\'s see how many times they can deliver to you the same game with a different story and new locations in the Silent Hill series before you start calling it too another Tomb Raider.
So how about I compare them this way.
Resident Evil 1 - 3 vs Silent Hill 1 - 3
Resident Evil 1 > Resident Evil 2 > Resident Evil 3 > Silent Hill 1 > Silent Hill 3 >>> Silent Hill 2
And lookee there, I prefer Resident Evil. :)

Well you can see the results by yourself that proove that the Resident Evil series is dying.
BTW:The Tomb Raider series which wasnt as good after Tomb Raider 1, has 6 episodes and there are still 2 more planned an it still sells.Long continuation of the series doesnt proove that a series is great.
Also see Finbal Fantasy.Sells like hotcakes, there is nothing innovative in the series and there are still sequels in the making.
You also said by yourself there are more chances of making bad games if you make more sequels.Which Resident Evil was so great after Resi2?Resi3?Code Veronica?RE:Remake?Or Re:0?And it still sells.
And lookee up there most people prefer SH(Including me) :)
-
You didn\'t understand a thing I said.
Well you can see the results by yourself that proove that the Resident Evil series is dying.
I pretty much just spelled that out for you. The RE series has been rehashed to death. Just like the Silent Hill series will be if they continue to give you the same game every incarnation with a new story and new environment.
BTW:The Tomb Raider series which wasnt as good after Tomb Raider 1, has 6 episodes and there are still 2 more planned an it still sells.Long continuation of the series doesnt proove that a series is great.
As I just said, the RE series has gone way downhill. That being already established, the RE series as a whole (including the first three) is overall better than the SH series. IMO. I don\'t even know why you brought this point up.
Also see Finbal Fantasy.Sells like hotcakes, there is nothing innovative in the series and there are still sequels in the making.
In terms of being innovative to the series, it adds a completely new magic/levelling up/battle system with each game. In fact, Final Fantasy and Resident Evil have both added more gameplay elements with each incarnation to the series (despite being much longer) than the Silent Hill series has.
You also said by yourself there are more chances of making bad games if you make more sequels.Which Resident Evil was so great after Resi2?Resi3?Code Veronica?RE:Remake?Or Re:0?And it still sells.
Why do you keep bringing up sales? Code Veronica and 0 were both poor games (IMO), but sold well. Who cares? The same goes for Silent Hill 2. Poor game that sold well. What\'s the whole point of bringing up how much it sells?
And again, look back at my previous point, the more sequals a series produces the more chance it has of them going bad. Tomb Raider and Resident Evil are perfect examples of that.
And lookee up there most people prefer SH(Including me)
Let\'s see if you still like it after 3 more rehashes, shall we? :) And I\'m merely saying that IMO, the Resident Evil series is superior to the Silent Hill series. I don\'t care if everyone else prefers the Silent Hill series.. I\'m not playing videogames to be popular..
-
Resident Evil 3 > Silent Hill 1
you sir, might be on crack
i would give RE:survivor more respect then RE:3 nemesis
-
Nemesis was great...
STAAAARSSS!!!
-
-
Is it worth buying SH3, when I have not played SH 1 or 2 before ? Will the whole story be some sort of confusing mess, because I missed the 2 first ? Just wondering.
-
The story is totally different with different characters so it is worth getting.

Thanks for agreeing with me.Also add the rehashes began after Resi 2.There is still no SH rehash yet.

The first three? The only GREAT Resident Evil for me was 1.The second was very good and the third.........Not a title worth beingmetioned as a survival horror game.

No no.Resident Evil adds almost nothing. What they add only make the game more action oriented and less frightening.
Why do you keep bringing up sales? Code Veronica and 0 were both poor games (IMO), but sold well. Who cares? The same goes for Silent Hill 2. Poor game that sold well. What\'s the whole point of bringing up how much it sells?
Because RE doesnt still live because its a great game.Thats what I wanted to proove.BTW:SH2 was a great game.I was disapointed with it but after I found a plot analysis for it it made me see the game from a better approach,It just wasnt as good as the first. It wasnt a poor game exactly.
And again, look back at my previous point, the more sequals a series produces the more chance it has of them going bad. Tomb Raider and Resident Evil are perfect examples of that.

I\'m not playing videogames to be popular
Resident Evil sure has mores sales, more sequels, a movies etc.You areindeed playing a more popular game.

I never tried to say it\'s still a great game, I said repeatedly that it was losing steam (still quite fun, though..), but that doesn\'t change the fact that as a series, RE has more (better) games, in my opinion.

Instead of taking ALL the Resident Evil games lets take the first 3.And lets take ALL the silent hill games which are only three.Hmmm.Nah.Resident Evil doesnt have as good games as the SH.Now if we take all the good resident evil games the ONLY Resident Evil that was truelly horrifying was Resident Evil 1.And ofcourse we are talking (as I said earlier) about a series with more games. Its easier to find more good games. And if we use your own epicheiremas the Resident Evil is worse. How?You suggest the Resident Evil series is better because it has more good games(and ofcourse I explained before why).It also has more bad games.
The plot was fairly easy to follow, and the only good thing about the game. Reading an analysis would have ruined the only reason to play the game in the first place.
Fairly easy to follow?Perhaps you didnt get the plot.It was even more complex than SH1.
There are many great games outthere that if someone spoils the plot it ruins the excitement the game is offering.Thats why we use the spoiler alert tag anyways.SH2 was like a movie or a book you shouldnt know the ending or the plot otherwise its ruined. That doesnt make them bad.
But even if I read the plot before I ve playied the game this doesnt make the game less scarier than RE.In fact its still scarier.
Who cares if it sells?
Nobody.Only Capcom. If you get what I mean. There is no great resident evil anymore.Still sells.Still a success.Still more sequels, still more popular.Gives the impression of a better game.Even I who prefer the SH series I buy every Resident Evil sequel(except the gun survivor series)

That\'s fine if that\'s your opinion. I was expressing my opinion that Resident Evil is better than Silent Hill because it has more good games. I\'m not trying to claim to be the definitive answer.
BTW, RE has no bad games, SH has 1. :p
Fairly easy to follow?Perhaps you didnt get the plot.It was even more complex than SH1.
Well, I also understood MGS2 perfectly my first time through, so maybe I\'m just special. :):) But the game was boring and was probably LESS "terrifying" than the other two Silent Hill\'s, and ALL of the Resident Evil\'s. Meaning, it wasn\'t scary AT ALL (IMO, of course. :):))
There are many great games outthere that if someone spoils the plot it ruins the excitement the game is offering.Thats why we use the spoiler alert tag anyways.SH2 was like a movie or a book you shouldnt know the ending or the plot otherwise its ruined. That doesnt make them bad.[/quote]
You mis-understood. IMO, the only reason to play the game was for it\'s plot. The gameplay was the same as the first one, the puzzles were crap, it wasn\'t scary, and the environments were dull.
But even if I read the plot before I ve playied the game this doesnt make the game less scarier than RE.In fact its still scarier.
Again, in your opinion. I thought it to be the least scary out of both of the series\' (as I stated earlier).

100% irrelevant to the discussion. How much a game sells has absolutely no bearing on my opinion of a game series. And thus, makes no difference toward my decision. Which is what the entire thread is all about. Why bring up sales?
Ofcourse. The past and present show that Silent Hill is great and a better series as a survival horror. You are asking me to see the future in your previous post.
No I wasn\'t.

there is no "core" series
you can\'t pick out the good ones, exclude the pathetic ones, and say the RE series is so great

Make of it what you wish, but as far as I\'m concerned, a completely different game that is just using the franchises name as a buffer is not considered a part of central unit of games.
It\'s like calling Final Fantasy Tactics a Final Fantasy game. I certainly wouldn\'t do it. Though, you might..
:)

i would
final fantasy tactics is one of the greatest titles on the series

Crap puzzles in SH2? Aww... u must\'ve never tried higher than "Normal" setting. They were worse than in the original, mind you.
RE puzzles? Decipher the password from the horrendously complex and sprawling diaries with little to no hints for example, in true Resident evil diary fashion, an empty row signifying a page change (do they write stuff on post-it-notes only, with so little text on one page?) :
"I set up the new PASSWORD today, it\'s got 3 digits now, and I think nobody will ever be able to figure it out... It has something to do with my experimentation with COWS.
I had TWO cows, and I accidentally killed ONE of them while trying to mate it with the elephant I got from the nearby circus last night, so I wonder how many I had left.
One night, the other COW was raped by a radioactive monkey that escaped from my room while I was trying to molest it in the most vile manners I could think of, for I... AM... GOD!
I will be the ruler of all earth and skies, and the cow gave birth to a beautiful little COW.
So at first I had 2 cows, then I had 1, and in the end I had 2 cows again, thank god I didn\'t lose any valuable specimens after all. Though the other cow has a monkey\'s head, but I don\'t think that matters after all, it\'s not like it\'s going to go mental and kill everything in sight.
"Signed : Alfred E. Loonie, Umbrella nutcase extraordinaire"

That\'s fine if that\'s your opinion. I was expressing my opinion that Resident Evil is better than Silent Hill because it has more good games. I\'m not trying to claim to be the definitive answer.
BTW, RE has no bad games, SH has 1. :p[/qoute]
RE doesnt have bad games?Resi3 was bad.CV was a bit above average.
SH2 wasnt bad.It wasnt as great as the first.
Less terryfying that all the other Resident Evils? The only Resident Evil that scared me was Resident Evil1.Only.It was less terrifying than SH1 and 2 but no way less scary than any resident evil.
You mis-understood. IMO, the only reason to play the game was for it\'s plot. The gameplay was the same as the first one, the puzzles were crap, it wasn\'t scary, and the environments were dull.
The Gameplay atleast maintained the feel of the first.Unlike The Resident Evil series which is ruined from sequel after sequel. The Puzzles werent that bad.I mean Resident Evil 2 and beyond had more of the same and needed less thinking than Resident Evil1.What enviroments did you want to see?The repeating underground laboratories? The repeating mansions that are supposed to be scary? Its a damn foggy town. All silent hills feature the same town and a similar look.Otherwise it would ruin the game
.
Again, in your opinion I thought it to be the least scary out of both of the series\' (as I stated earlier).
I dont remember saying its scarier than SH1 and SH3 or as scary.

100% irrelevant to the discussion. How much a game sells has absolutely no bearing on my opinion of a game series. And thus, makes no difference toward my decision. Which is what the entire thread is all about. Why bring up sales?
also see
And again, look back at my previous point, the more sequals a series produces the more chance it has of them going bad.Tomb Raider and Resident Evil are perfect examples of that.
Resident Evil sells either its bad or good. With other words its prefered. Its just like Tomb Raider where gamers want to own them but sucks as a series. Its not the sales figures I am talking about.Even if Capcom releases worse resident evils than what we have now Resident Evil fans will keep wanting them as long as they maintain the original gameplay mechanics and style.
Its actually dying as a game.It was dying since Resident Evil3
No I wasn\'t.
= Let\'s see if you still like it after 3 more rehashes, shall we?
Yes you were.

Come on, you cannot consider Survivor part of the core series. Even Capcom themselves have said this. Resident Evil, the core series, is any installment in the series that furthers the storyline, maintains the playstyle and so on. Survivor is an off based version using the lisence.
final fantasy tactics is one of the greatest titles on the series
Is that to say, that if Tactics was one of the worst you wouldn\'t consider it part of the series? Most likely, you wouldn\'t. It\'d be an exception then.
And I don\'t care, even if you do, Capcom\'s track record with the series is better than Konami\'s has been so far. Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 was both triple A titles, where as Silent Hill was great but Silent Hill 2 was lacking.
While we are on the subject. While Resident Evil\'s stories may be corny, at least the enemies look damn cool. Unlike Silent Hill, which is a bunch of poorly drawn, rejected art projects, in my opinion.

The enemies in SH are not visually disgusting. They are trying to be psychologically disturbing.Although I agree that the enemies in Resis are cooler.
BTW:I am bored of the same old story. There is almost always an underground laboratory, a trator, a huge biological weapon/mutation, a countdown, a huge explosion, a psychopath bad guy.
Its basically the same story with some twists to give the impression of difference.
-
The story has continued. It has not taken any drastic changes, but it has continued to follow the main characters and the main enemies. Thus, a lot of the same settings.
-
lol, yer still on "core" series
i love it

Come on.Capcom can do better than this. They can add more variety if they try.

Silent Hill 2 wasn\'t scary. At all.
I guess I feel about it the same way you feel about the RE\'s after #1.
All silent hills feature the same town and a similar look.Otherwise it would ruin the game
Ahh, but you\'re criticizing RE for having a similar look each time?
I dont remember saying its scarier than SH1 and SH3 or as scary.
You said it was scarier than all the RE\'s. I disagreed.
-
Silent Hill 2 wasn\'t scary. At all.
to you it wasnt. perhaps you like zombie after zombie popping out behind corners, ad naseum
-
Zombie\'s are a hella a lot more scarey than walking around in a town with so much fog that it\'s pathetic, as ugly, poorly done monsters moan and groan.
I\'d rather be in a situation where I have to conserve ammo, in a tight hallway, as a zombie lingers by me.
-
Wow...one hell of an argument...just my two cents here...
Both of these series are good for different reasons. The first RE I bought with my PS1, with absolutely no info on it. It just looked cool. It was a fantastic freakin\' game. The second one, I bought b/c of the first one. It was a fantastic freakin\' game. The third one, I bought b/c of the first two. It was not fantastic; it was just a freakin\' game.
All the RE games have that "BOO" factor, though. The remake for GC was great, IMO...
Silent Hill doesn\'t go for the "BOO" scare, though. It is completely different from RE. It goes more for the "Crap, what the hell IS this?" scare. More of a bothering you, nudging you to go forward more. I like both of them, but they\'re completely different.
Silent Hill 3 is not out yet in the US, as far as I know. So if you guys wanna continue to compare only 1-3 in both series, I have no basis yet. Reviews don\'t count. Screens don\'t count. However, all in all, I would agree that RE 3 is crap. So that leaves us at 2 good games vs. 2 good games, in my opinion.
All this being said, I guess I would say that if Silent Hill 3 doesn\'t suck, I would rate it higher than the RE series, based on the fact that RE3 did, in fact, blow donkey nuts.
-
I\'d rather be in a situation where I have to conserve ammo, in a tight hallway, as a zombie lingers by me.
sure, if you wanna play a 5 hour game filled to the toilet lid of those situations, enjoy the RE series
-
i played code veronica survivor in the arcade... pain in the ass game...
i beat res evil 0,1,2,3,survivor... stuck in code veronica... i got to antarctica but i have no ammo...
so i bought the one on ps2 and restarted... bad idea, its harder than on DC
anyway, i liked silent hill 1 and 2... i never beat SH or SH2 but they were really good... scared the crap outta me when they first came out. im in the hospital in SH2...havent really played since november 2001... lol
isnt silent hill 3 coming out sometime soon?
-
Zombies... scary? oO
They\'re so slow, so defenseless, and so unoriginal, though. But as already stated, to each their own; RE just never seemed scary to me, what with grenade launchers, flame throwers, gatling guns, and rocket launchers at my disposal. I\'d much rather take on freaky lookin\' monster things with only a wooden board with nails or even a steel pipe in my inventory. Now there\'s survival horror, in my opinion. :-p
BTW, most of the action in the Silent Hill series takes place inside hotels, hospitals, schools, or other buildings. There is no fog: Just you, pitch-black darkness, and a small flashlight providing your only source of illumination. There are no zombies, obviously, but if you want to experience situations where you have to conserve ammo while in tight hallways, there\'s no better way to do so than to play the Silent Hill games. Again, in my opinion.

Zombies not so scary.
Hunters clicking around a corner when you have absolutely no health, and no ammo is scary.
Nemesis continually charging through door after door to get to you when you have very little health and no real way of stopping him is scary.
Killing a zombie and thinking a room is safe, only to find the zombie has come back much quicker, and much more powerful, and chasing after you with no way of telling where he is except by the increasingly louder footsteps, and the occasional reflection in a mirror, is scary..
etc. etc.
Zombies popping out of no where got old after the first one, however. :)
Although the series has gotten progressively less scary with each installment (one of the main reasons I disliked Code Veronica the most..)

what kind of horror movies do you like, bob?

They were a truely a thread only in RE1.

Almost never had very little health in RE:Nemesis. It was fearly easy. And if you saw Nemesis?Just run.

Bah.RE:Remake and a Remake and just one game alone never define a series of many sequels to become better
-
I don\'t think what kind of horror movies has any bearing. I like classic and thinking man horror films.
The Shining (Kurbrick)
The Exorcist
Suspiria
Opera
Night of the Living Dead (not the REMAKE!!!)
Dawn of the Dead
But I also like raunchy slashers.
Friday the 13th
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
Cannibal Ferox
The list goes on and on.
I have to say the Silent Hill games never bothered me. There was nothing disturbing about them. No scare tactics and nothing to make me feel uncomfortable. However, everytime I play RE:Remake and kill a zombie...I know damn well, one time, when I walk back through he is gonna be there and he is goin to be pissed off. It makes me anxious, something the Silent Hill series fails to do.

My all-time favorite\'s are the original Halloween, and The Exorcist. If that helps.
They were a truely a thread only in RE1.
Right, a licker never killed you in RE2? Or a Hunter in the hospital in RE:Nemesis (among the other hunter derivitives in the game)?
And that was only one example..
Almost never had very little health in RE:Nemesis. It was fearly easy. And if you saw Nemesis?Just run.
Yah, you had to run. But he kept following you. Unlike in the Silent Hill series which is basically a >>Hallway filled with monsters >> Run away >> Enter room without monsters >> Explore for a while >> Enter back into hallway >> Run past monsters >> Enter another room with no monsters (repeat).
The thing with Silent Hill is, you have less weaponry and ammunition, but that\'s because you don\'t need the weaponry and ammunition. Other than a boss, I\'m pretty sure I\'ve only killed one enemy my entire time playing Silent Hill 3 (which I love, btw). And that was only because I had to read a long message and the guy kept interrupting me :p.
The thing which made the RE games progressively worse was that they started giving you too much weaponry and ammunition.

Only in Resi 1 and 2.In Resi3 they were hardly a thread.Died once or twice because I wasnt expecting it.But never felt the thread as in Resi1.The lickers killed me a few times in Resi2.But I was speaking about the Resis after 1 and 2.

You just run and you knew that after 3 or 4 doors the Nemesis wouldnt get you.
Dont compare the way SH is trying to scare you as if its trying to scare you the same way the Resi is.The Resident Evil is trying to surprise and startle you.The SH is trying to disturb you.
The thing with Silent Hill is, you have less weaponry and ammunition, but that\'s because you don\'t need the weaponry and ammunition.
Thats the problem with Resident Evil.Resident Evil1 was more claustrophobic because of limited moves, ammunition, health aids and herbs.
In SH you can easily avoid monsters but you also want to get rid of them because they are disturbing you.The sound becomes annoying(in the good way), and althouh killing you is most unlikely to happen they cause damage in narrow places, and also they reduce your concentration(especially in the hospital). You might not use the ammo also because they are limited, but the sure thing is that you ll use the close contact weapons in narrow places.
Other than a boss, I\'m pretty sure I\'ve only killed one enemy my entire time playing Silent Hill 3 (which I love, btw). And that was only because I had to read a long message and the guy kept interrupting me :p.
Read above
The thing which made the RE games progressively worse was that they started giving you too much weaponry and ammunition. [/B]
Ofocurse.Thats why fans of the survival horror that shifted from Resident Evil to SH still prefer Resi1 and 2.

horror movies play a large part in why he likes RE over SH
he likes shock films. cheap tricks that would make you jump.
not me. i\'ll take creepyness (aka SH) anyday. gimme dario argento

Perhaps this is the first time that I agree with him :D
-

I want to kill them because they are disturbing me?
Why kill a monster that poses no threat?
In RE, sure you had to actually use your weapons, but that\'s because the monsters always posed a threat on your life.
Dont compare the way SH is trying to scare you as if its trying to scare you the same way the Resi is.
I\'m not. SH provides you with a much greater safety net in that it really limits where it\'s monsters are. Meaning, if you avoid those areas, you\'ll be fine. I know I\'m rarely scared knowing that I only need to get past one monster, and get into the second door from the left, and there will be no more worries. In RE (again, mainly in the first two, much less so in the others) it was always a relief to actually make it to a save room. After being chased by zombies/hunters/whatever, through three or so rooms when I don\'t have any health (or perhaps forgot to bring backup health - for the later games), I always beathed a sigh of relief upon hearing that save room music. :)
he likes shock films. cheap tricks that would make you jump.
I really don\'t consider those movies to be shock horror. Perhaps a combination of shock, and creepiness.
But it\'s hardly about being scary anymore, at least for myself. Resident Evil hasn\'t been all that scary (read: able to make me feel uneasy) since the original (and perhaps REmake), and the same goes for Silent Hill.

Play Invisible Mode in REMake...
-
No, thank you.
I remember invisible mode..Bad....
:D

heh heh i still remember this thread...and this was a good read...as it stands now i still very much enjoy the silent hill series,..i mean i can still throw in silent hill 2, 3, & 4,.(i liked that 1st person view concept in 4) at around 11:30 at night and still be a little disturbed by it...overall with me playing res 4(really impressed with that) i have both franchises at a tie,...i like \'em both...i wonder what silent 5 will be like on the next gen systems..yea you know it\'s comin...hmmm the more i think about it,..even with that resident evil 4 game,..i still like the silent hill series a tad better,..only because of how they introduce new characters with each episode and the stories are actually a bit more gripping in the psycological sense...
when you got to that otherworld in silent hill 3 in the warehouse with all that crazy imagery and the part towards the end of the game where you are in the church and you are at the part where you see only 2 pairs of what seems to be schoolgirl legs hanging from the ceiling? heh when you first played through that it was pretty intense, any game that can get me kinda shook late at night with my mental, gets big props from me,..and silent hill has done that with every game i\'ve played in the series...
-
Yep Silent Hill takes all the best elements of a psychological horror movie and puts them in the game in a very creative way.
Resident Evil had its own special atmosphere of death and rotten flesh nightmare of the living dead and monstrous mutations but that was Resi1 and 2. After that it went all too action, killing the claustrophobic feeling of it and overdoing it with stupid characters and a repeated scenario.
Resi4 improved on many aspects but the more you progressed in the game the more action packed it got. I probably died more times in 4 than in any other Resi game but thats because I was careless thanks to the action packed gameplay and so I didnt care if I died. Too many ammo and herbs. Puzzles were easier too. The Romero style music which was perfect for the series was replaced with cheesy action music. I had mixed feelings about it. For a resi game it wasnt what I expected though as a stand alone game it was very good.
CV had some superb ideas but at the same time the introduction of uninteresting characters and bosses(Ashford? Steve? the twins\' father, Ashford\'s sister?-Resi2 had probably the best monsters) terrible voice acting, same old monsters, and some weird plot ideas and twists that didnt fit with the Resident Evil world ruined a game that otherwise would have been a masterpiece.
I felt a similar thing in SH4 as with Resi4. I liked it at the end but there were a few things I thought that should have been removed or improved. That game should have been made on a next gen console. The concept was great.
-
RE4 was a blast-a-thon. It doesn\'t count.
-
On the lowest difficulty setting yes.
But RE wins for me because I think of it like this. Every Silent Hill game sucked as has every RE game prior to RE4. Therefore RE wins just because RE4 was one of the best games of last year. Simple logic.
And yes RE1-3 blew nuts off I still don\'t know how people could put up with those god awful controls and lame puzzles. Silent Hill...like lic said on the first page...a boring foggy mess.
-
You are outnumbered
-
Seeing as I didn\'t play it on the lowest difficulty settings (nor do I play ANY games on the lowest difficulty settings), you are incorrect.
I also normally start games on the difficulty setting above normal. Though, I\'m not sure what level I played RE4 on. Regardless, it was a walk in the park, and ridiculously so.
-
Hey ! It isn\'t FAIR ! The poll says i already voted yet....i did NOT !
I wanna vote myself, instead of some h4x0r

same here
-
Ok, so my potential vote has been hacked somehow before i could make it. but ow well...I\'ll just say that imo the SH series is NOT overrated, although not all SH games are equally good.
Personally, I\'ll stick with SH2.
- one of the first PS2 games to feature proper realtime light & shadow system ; which was integral to the exploration gameplay. It\'s funny, becuz it did this before SplinterCell 1 (Xbox).
- The hybrid 3D camera & controls ; suiting the genre, but doing it a bit more refined. Melee combat & shooting is not objective #1 so it\'s only logic that James doesn\'t handle that all that great.
- The metaphorical leveldesign. Pure genius. I think Eisenstein would have loved the \'set\'. James descends deeper and deeper into the abyss of his mind. The levels make this litterally real for him and the player.
There are also so many connotations on so many levels in the environs and what can be found there.
- The story is imho similair to the effect of the Sixth Sense, but it branches out so many paths more & deeeper. It 1ups that movie.
- After first playthrough the game left me depressed ( in a good way ? ) for a coupla days. Marketing bs or not ; Along with Ico this was PS2\'s Emotion Engine becoming truth.
- Pyramid Head ; nuff said. :thumb:
-
Regardless, it was a walk in the park, and ridiculously so.
Then you\'re in the minority on this one.
