Title: Do you archive your music into MP3 formats?
Post by: Living-In-Clip on June 29, 2003, 01:22:55 PM
NOTE: No talk of piracy in this thread. This is about legit use of the MP3 format for digitally archiving your music...

Here is the question.. Do you take your cds and convert them into MP3 format? If so - why and how many songs / gigs do you have ?

I personally have been goin\' thru the process for a few reasons.

(1) I am to lazy to switch cds back and forth.

(2) Most my cds stay in my car (until  I get an MP3 jukebox for it), so I can\'t be bothered transfering them back and forth.

(3) I have way over 300 cds and sometimes I want to listen to a few songs off random cds. Making one huge playlist lets me select, without messing with the cds.

(4) I also have them as backups, just in case someone brings into my car and steals my cds.

As of now, I got around 3 gig of MP3\'s and around 400 songs, so I still have quite a few to go before my conversion is done.

I\'ve done that for maybe 6 cd\'s and that was because I had to do something else with them.  However, the first rule of this thread says... I\'m not supposed to talk about it.  ;)

LIC have you tried encoding into AAC format since you\'re a Mac guy?  (You are a Mac guy, right?)

I\'ve tested out .ogg and .mp3 and can\'t find a noticeable difference between the two.  And since .ogg is opensource and Mpeg is copyright I\'ll probably rip & encode to ogg.

i do encode my cds to mp3, i\'ve got a portable mp3 cd playerand i prefer carrying 1 cd to 10 cd\'s. also i\'m very careless when it comes to cd\'s i always tend to scratch them, and since cd\'s dont come cheap i usualy convert the songs to mp3.

I only archive CDs that are starting to get scratched up.  I use Exact Audio Copy that has error correction to fix any droputs from scratches.  I also archive the raw WAV, I hate compressing if I have the option.

Rob, I have a few songs n .ACC file format and they are bit clearer, but nothing real noticable.
