It seems that some major worker dealing with the new Sony project have spoken too much about PS3 lately and has revealed new data regarding the "heart" of the new system. This time the aim is memory.
PS3 could incorporate 4 Yellowstone XDR DRAM chips to reach a combined memory of 256MB, at speeds of 25,6 GB per sec. Sony has contacted with Elpida, Toshiba & Samsung to manufacture this memory chips, whose production will begin in 2005.
Sony expects to produce 20 million of DRAM chips in the first year and then reach 30 million next year. According to this, we can think that the new system would be launched in 2005 in Japan, although Sony has not confirmed nor refuted this information.

Here a little link to more info (it\'s in Dutch though...)
http://www.dgsonline.nl/nieuws/?id=11121 (http://www.dgsonline.nl/nieuws/?id=11121)
 I don\'t know, but these specs sound a little
slim. Maybe they have to compromise a bit becuz they\'re
pumping so many resources in to just have the Cell in
time in PS3. 32 mb for the GPU :surprised ....

consoles don\'t need as much ram as a computer...256 of main ram with 64 megs of video ram are what people are saying now.
(the 64 megs of eDram comes straight out of the PS3 patent for cell, but the layout isn\'t known yet.....or the on chip video ram)
256 megs is not the total amount of ram....each cell chip will have their own eDram and so will the rasterizer (eDram as well...which is on chip ram)
The ending total may well be double the 256 megs of "yellowstone" memory.

I believe that the sorce or person who leaked the information is full of potato resadue. Sony\'s aim has always been Streaming Technology not the conventional memory "computer" set up. They may indead incorperate the said memory, but I believe that they will continue with there present course. And if they put that much memory inside it, it must be a very very fast system. Remember if it moves fast enough it dosn\'t need that much memory.

I think I will wait for Sony to release the official specs before I get too excited.

Caspian hit things on the nail. Sure memory will be needed, but it will fit in with the bandwidth. Not much use of having a 1GB of RAM if you need over a minute to load/save to/from it...
[disclaimer]the one minute is only to emphasize the point[/disclaimer]

Sigh. One more post and im dun:D. Even if this isnt true, im so exited i could wet myself (not really). PS3 will be amazing i hope. The hype has already begun.

And what makes you so sure? They patented the name already so i dont see why not. It hasnt been called a project name either unless they descided that ps3 is the project name. Where do you get this huntch from? Please share

I do think it will be called Playstation 3. Perhaps the last "Playstation" system. But Sony has to take advantage of the brand and the popular admiration toward that name.

I agree which is why 256mb of ram will be used and not the GB or higher some people fantasize about
256mb of super fast memory will still allow top programmers to get sick results from the machine, while allowing lesser developers to still produce excellent results.
Streaming will always be the future, large storages are expensive and will someday prove to be bottlenecks in not so distant future endeavors. Sony obviously knows this and pushes on with it regardless of the popular opinion of the last generation.
Memory is cheap these days, and Sony would be foolish not to pack the machine with as much ram as the price structure can hold.
Early games will look feel, and play much better, and later games will benefit exponetially.
Sony also had to take a lot of bitchig from developers about the lack of ram, you can bet Sony will use at least 256mb IMO
