Title: Project Gotham Racing 2 set to give GT4 a run for its money.
Post by: ##RaCeR## on August 05, 2003, 05:01:46 AM
Looking pretty sweet, I hope GT4 can out gun this one, as its looking hot.

It\'ll probably play like crap, still doesn\'t stop it from being purrty.

Wow.

There\'s already a thread about this XBox game in the Multiconsole section.  But I really appreciate the fact that I\'ve gotten to look at the exact same pictures twice.

Edit/

And why hope GT4 can outgun it?  Think how amazing GT4 should end up being.  Imagine if PGR2 did outgun it.  That\'d be a great game.   :)

too bad those screens aren\'t exactly what the game looks like. Also, the build running at E3 was at 30 fps, but rumours say that the game may be downgraded a bit to reach the 60 fps. Don\'t quote me on that though...

Looks like The Getaway, but with far less cars on the road.

How old are these shots that have been posted?  Would they be from the 60fps version (if that\'s true)?

Eh, sorry, wrong forum I know, but the main forum is alittle dead at the moment... Thought it needed a bit of spice.

The textures in those pics look worse than PGR1.

I doubt it will have 500 cars 50 tracks and a deep simulation mode.  Looks arent everything.

I feel the second shots that have been posted aren\'t exactly representative of the game that will meet xbox when all is done. Expect something quite a bit better than PGR1, but not quite as clean as those AAed Microsoft screens. I hope they fix the framerate to 60fps, as 30 fps would be inexcusable.

Funny though, what happened to the self-shadowing? I remember the first batch of screens showing off this feature...

Why the hell do you compare these two games? Yes, they both feature cars but that\'s about the only thing they\'ve got in common.

But seeing as you\'re a Mariah Carey fan it\'s not so strange after all I guess...

Racer: Self-shadow..
In the early pics the car was casting shadows on itself..
Like the mirror on the door cast a shadow on the door.

That effect isn’t there anymore (at least I cant see it).

Btw, I love how they made the cars look like toy cars instead of real cars. There is something about it that makes them look unrealistic. :)

Spare me your anal retentive comments man...

If you didn\'t already get the idea, I was comparing the two games graphically, not gameplay wise, but your such an ass you probably didn\'t realise that.

PGR2 looks good and I have seen vids of it and I was impressed but GT4 is what amazes me. Check out this vid PGR2 looks good no lie but it doesn\'t look as real as GT4, when I saw this vid http://www.virtualdreams.fr/jeux/granturismo4/gt4-2.mpg I thought it was real, every thing GT4 will look real.

Do you have quick time media, if so you will have to wait for alittle while, it\'s loading when it gives you just a white screen.

Direct feed is when its a direct link video, ie its not a tv being filmed with a video camera.

Oh ok. I don\'t think there is one but you still see how realistic the game looks which is impressive since it\'s being recorded.

Before someone jumps on me, here\'s the source:

Inevitably all this extra detail comes at a price, with the overall frame rate locked at 30 FPS, rather than the 60 used in the original. Lead programmer Roger Perkins argued: "We wanted to keep the visual quality. We\'d rather it was running at a consistent frame rate at 30, than occasionally chugging at 60 as it did in the original. Microsoft did some research and found people didn\'t even notice whether the game was running at 30 or 60 FPS." And to be fair, having played the game for an hour or so, we didn\'t notice either.

Sorry folks, this is a bitter disappointment. Welcome back to last generation.

but if you don\'t notice it why should it matter?

If the game doesn\'t take a severe hit, or in the case even a minor one in gameplay and overall presentation I think it\'s just fine.

somewhat disappointing but in the end it doesn\'t matter...

heh, I just argued this over various pages over at beyond3d. To cut it short this time, I find it very doubtful that the difference between a racing game running at 30 fps and 60 fps is not noticable. This is merely an excuse to justify the fact that they can\'t get the game to run at 60 in the quality they hyped and now have to downgrade the framerate.

So, to throw the ball back - why should I give a damn about a reasearch Microsoft did, if the difference is more than just obvious to me? And I bet anything, but even the average consumer will be able to perceive the difference between two games running different framerates.

Ah, but the average consumer is going to prefer the pretty graphics over a smooth game.

well, I\'m not going to argue with you over what the average consumer wants¨, because quite frankly, there are people who prefer smoother gameplay to choppy visuals. To me, anything below 60 fps in this particular genre is something that should not be tolerated this generation anymore - and as a racing purist, I am very disappointed that there are developers ready to sell their game through stunning screens rather than pure racing adrenalized gameplay that makes you want to scream for more speed.

In the end, lets face it - would you rather just see the car modeled as your dream car, but perceive it as driving a schoolbus or would you go for a few details less just but actually experience what that car is all about? The answer is clear to me, but to each their own.

Bah....Burnout2 rules ALL!!

Great graphics, super fast super smooth gameplay, that lifts the andrenaline to its heights, and makes fast and the furious look like the old Amano\'s cartoon racer.

Well, I\'m with seven there ; racing games stand or fall by their
performance of framerate. We\'re talking about half the amount of visual information the brain receives to react to a high speed situation > if they finally lock it at 30 instead of 60 fps. I think I\'m
known here to h8 EA\'s F1 games for their crappy framerates , seeing PGR2 going down there has me very disappointed. Yes
I enjoyed PGR1 quite a bit. The idea of # 2 being turned into a
pretty slideshow makes me say :thumbd:

If you were to run the game running at 30fps and the same running at 60fps, you would definitely notice.  But if you\'re never given the opportunity to see it running at 60fps you won\'t notice it...

Case in point is Halo.  I would not have been able to tell you if the game was running at 30 fps or 60fps. Honestly...I really didn\'t know until mm started complaining about it in every other thread.

Personally it is quite noticable. At least for me and it doesnt always really bother me, but when im playing a racing game that should be fast (as most SHOULD be) then it is a bit dissapointing. Burnout2 you can tell is 60fps and the difference is huge compared to some games.

Its not say a difference between chocolate and shit but definately a difference.

Frames per second is THE most important thing in the racing game genre imo. I have to make superfast decisions concerning
steering, breaking and accelerating based on the visual information provided ; so 30 fps instead of 60 fps will decrease the \'feel\' for the game, in short, the \'gameplay\', by half.
I don\'t care for some little aliasing, i just want a racing game which plays and feels great ; 60 fps. Of course fsaa is gonna sell
the game more on a short term basis and to stupid casual gamers who just want to show off a pretty slideshow to their silly little friends. Gee, how marketing pressure ruins all content eh :o

btw. I signed a petition over at the Bizarre creations forum to get \'em to change it to 60 fps. Hope it\'ll have some effect.
