In a talk with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Ken Kutaragi, head honcho at Sony Computer Entertainment, officially confirmed that the successor to the PlayStation 2 will in fact be backward compatible with not only PS2 games, but also PS one games.
"PS one runs on PlayStation 2 through emulation rather than actual hardware. PlayStation 3 will offer the same compatibility for PS2 software and the format will continue forever," Kutarai explained.
The inclusion of backward compatibility is not all that surprising, but we\'re glad it\'s finally official. Now we don\'t have to worry about having ten consoles and the corresponding wire mess in our living rooms.
The reason to why I am so excited is because I have not bought one pirated copy game for the PS2. (I had my original PS1 for 6 years and bought over 60 pirated games but none of them worked on the new PS2 system at the time and left me without any PS1 games. ) I learned my lesson and decided to only buy the original thing. I now have 25 PS2 and 3 Gamecube games that are all original

that\'s a suprise...a good one though seeing as how I\'m still not caught up on all the RPG\'s the ps had to offer.

I hope they just leave it at Dual Shock 2 and dont upgrade the controller because the one thing I hated was the fact that some games wanted the Dual Shock 2 controller like bouncer.

But The Bouncer would have had even LESS depth had you taken away the analogue buttons..

So the PS3 plays PS2 and PSX? If so, thats gonna be cool. Even if it plays just PS2 and PS3 that\'ll be fine with me.

Yeah. Its great to just have one universal system. I still keep my ps and everything but now i can have all my other crap hooked up at the same time. And yes all the problems have not been adressed but there is time and this is just a tidbit of the whole. Kool yer jets

If it\'s software emulation, I sure hope they make is PSX compatible, because I have a whooole lot of square games that I keep coming back to every so often.
As for the rest, you know they\'re going to redesign the controller... even though I think it\'s perfect now (maybe they could make it wireless/rechargeable).

it\'s not that bloody hard to do. it\'d be stupid if they didn\'t do it. its a requirement and you\'re giving them cudos as if it\'s a curtesy.

What are you talking about. They dont have to do jack S*it. Its nice to see them making smart moves and having ps3 play all 3 mediums. Did dreamcast have backward compatible hardware with saturn? Hell no. And we are talking the 3rd generation machine playing first gen machine games.

Well as far as I\'m concered they have got to do alot more than jackshit other wise it gives them less of an edge then there friendly Xbox2 compettitor which is also to be backwards compatable. As you can see this has become a requirement(quddos to avatarr) like how both Xbox and ps2 play shitty dvd\'s. Point here is don\'t allow yourself to get caught in that sort of tunnel thinking, if they did it for psx2 they had better do the same for the next.
When I shell out $400(canadian) for a new console, you damn stright i\'m going to have high expectations, cause the last time i checked i could spend that money getting quite a few back rubs, if you know what i mean:bounce:
Also we will see if stububrn Sony will have 4 controller ports this time, personally i\'m betting they will.

If the Ps3 is 20$ more because it as 4 controler port, i hope they will think twice before adding it. i\'d be curious to know the % of gamer that actually play with 3 friends at home. it\'s a feature that i dont want to pay for.
i\'d be VERY happy though to pay 20$ on my next PS* if they can put the net adaptor "in-the-box". Playing games with 3 others or more people is WAY better when each are behing their own TV and their own couch.

It will have 4 ports.I am sure about it.Because Sony doesnt think only what the gamer needs.They also see how the product will look from the eyes of the consumer who wants to buy a console.
2 controllers for the next generation will look like a downside from the consumer\'s perspective when at the same time there will be 2 more game consoles in the market with 4 controlers and with similar technology.4 controllers are becoming a standard.
Also this time the release of all competing next generation consoles will be very close to each other.Each console\'s disadvantage and advantage will be more noticable even if insignifigant.

Also you have to assume they are making the game system to be played in HD. So there will be more room to allow for 4 players to play.

Well at first it was rumored that ps3 would only play ps2 and ps3 games. Im reffering to the fact that it will be so for even ps. They are starting anew and many like to branch off from old ideas. People like to see new controllers etc etc. Sony will be handing down a lot of old news and some people dont respond to that as well. Sure people like to see extras but a large portion of casual gamers like new images. There have been plenty of times where $300 was spent on a console that couldnt even do half the things ps2 could. Sure it would suck if ps3 wasnt backwards compatible but it wouldnt break the system.
I think we are getting spoiled in our older (more technologically advanced) gaming years. Whether you see it my way or not, this is my take on the whole situation.

ATi is making the next graphics chip for the NextBox, correct? And nVidia makes the current chip for Xbox now.
