Title: Kids always "know everything"
Post by: videoholic on September 18, 2003, 08:26:51 AM
OK, this is a true story.

My cousin is 16 1/2...  Stil doesn\'t have his license.  Seems odd to me, but oh well.  I remember when I turned 16 I couldn\'t wait to have a license.

Anyway, he has gotten to where he is awful in school.  He always seemed bright as a youngster, but I think misguided direction set him estray and he just hasn\'t had direction in his life.

Well he wants to quit school.  I mean who needs school right?  He just wants his GED and then get on with his life.  THis is a very long story and much more involved, but I\'d have to be a chick to tell all the details.  God chicks always tell the longest stories.  I digress...

So his mom called and checked on the GED program.  Hmmmm.   What do you know..  YOu need a 2.0 to even qualifyfor the GED program.  HAHAHAHAHA.  He has a 1.8!!!  What a beautiful thing.  ANother thing.  You can\'t have any disciplinary actions for a year.  DOH.  He has two freaking pages worth!!!!  HAHAHAHAHAHA..  So to even be able to get his GED, he has to retake 10th grade and have no disciplinary actions.

Oh, it gets better...

You can\'t get your driver\'s license unless you are enrolled in school!!!!!!  HAHAHAHAHA..

Damnit, it serves kids right.  People take school so lightly and think they know everything.  WHat a beautiful thing.

Oh and car insurance?  Without even buying a car.  Just putting him on the family policy driving the family car would cost 3,000 per year.

Anyway, just thought it was funny.  If he wasn\'t so cocky I would feel bad for him.  Oh hell, nevermind.  Anyone who can\'t get over a 2.0 is pretty sad.  You have to really try to do that badly.

Parents have been divorced for about 6 or 7 years, but I really don\'t think it is 100% why.  I really think not playing any sports, not being in band or any other organized activities really puts you at a disadvantage socially.  You need organization in your life.

He actually wants his mom to cosign a loan for a car.  She actually will do it, but he has to stop smoking.  He stormed out of the house.

It never would have gotten that far with me.

A) I wouldn\'t give the kid jack shit if he smoked while living in my house.

B) I wouldn\'t even consider letting my child have a car who doesn\'t even have the ability to go to school.

He\'s a teenager - are you going to tell me you didn\'t do stupid shit that you regret? I\'m sure later on he\'ll regret this.

Can you even retake the 10th grade at that age? I don\'t know ?
As for not wanting his license, I don\'t see anything wrong with that. I didn\'t want mine and I didn\'t actually get mine until I hit 19. I just had no desire for the responsiblity, that comes with driving.

And have you considered that he made suffer from depression or another mental illness? Thus the lack of motivation school and outside life.

I think the GED program is different from state to state, isn\'t it? I know the lisence  / school thing is, as I have a cousin who dropped out of school and she got her lisence.

Of course I did shit I regret.  But not over the course of years..   I did isolated instances I regret.  Like telling a chick she was fat or something stupid like that.

I would have to assume you can retake 10th grade.  It was the grade he just failed.

Do I think he\'s depressed?  Of course I do.  The kid has very few friends because he treats people like crap.  It\'s very sad.

He just needs to straighten up his life.  If he applies himself and gets better friends, then he could turn himself around.  But I don\'t think he wants to.

I don\'t think friends are the main factor. He obviously has bigger and worse issue\'s. I\'m not saying decent friends wouldn\'t help matters, but he needs something more.

Prehaps...THERAPY?
;)

He\'s been in therapy.  His mom digs that stuff.  Apparently spending hundreds of dollars an hour on someone else telling you what you really already should know is money well spent.

I think "misunderstood" applies in this case. Yes, the kid needs a goal in life, his own plans. But I also think that imposing a certain
lifestyle ; like doing a team sport / being in a band / and all other \'mainstream society stuff will just work contraproductive. He just needs the time and opportunity to find his own \'drive\', his own thing. Forcing him to fit in ( and I don\'t mean to be disrespectfull ) with the grey masses will not help, i think. If you wanna help him, sit and talk, listen. Stuff or little things which he\'s interested in, even if it\'s stuff that never occurred to you. Of course , in the situation he\'s in now, when he wants stuff like a loan for a car he needs to be shown where \'the line is drawn\'.

Very true.  I wasn\'t really saying to be in organized sports, bands, etc. now.  I think he is past that as you suggested.

I listen to him and such, but the problem is without discpline from the family it\'s like farting in the wind.  Or pissing in the fan........

Yes, like all of us, he needs to find his \'energy\'which triggers him to become best at what he wants 2B. It sounds like he needs to realize that in a coupla years he will be at that responsible age where he just can\'t feed off others\'. But if he finds it he needs to guide it or otherwise it will be spilt.

I actually suggested a Boot Camp style school they have down there.  We did a story on it many moons ago.  It\'s only a couple weeks but it really helps.

His mom has threatened military school, but if you don\'t back up threats for the years prior, you don\'t have a leg to stand on when you make a threat like that.  Kind of like the boy who cried wolf.

I\'d enroll him in military school or ship him out in the Army. That would straighten him up. But he definitely needs school so I suggest military school.

If you were being serious, that\'s an extremely ignorant comment.  This is obviously someone who has other issues going on.  The level of his intellect has nothing to do with it..

I don\'t get it....

Anyway, apparently he found a night school he could go to.  Now he can get his license.  He apparently also got a landscaping job, but I don\'t know how long he\'ll be able to hack that because he\'s a lazy ass.  Hopefully he\'ll do it though.  Landscapers can makes some good money if they get good accounts.
