Title: Killzone is blowing ppl\'s haeds off
Post by: cobragt on October 13, 2003, 10:33:59 AM
We\'ve seen it, we\'ve played it and we love it. PlayStation.com ventures to Amsterdam to check out the future of combat and comes away red-eyed but thoroughly awestruck.

Never in the short but illustrious history of videogames has a product generated such astonishing levels of pre-release hype as Killzone. In fact, never mind pre-release; even before the game was officially announced, a wave of hysteria had spread the length and breadth of the internet. Hyperbole-ridden forum posts heaped praise on Guerrilla\'s FPS, and the phrase \'Halo beater\' was being gleefully bandied about even before the first screens had surfaced. A remarkable situation by anyone\'s standards, but all the more so considering that Killzone is being developed by a studio with little to no track record in creating console games.

Quite how an original title from a hitherto small Dutch developer managed to garner such astoundingly favourable early publicity is something of a mystery. Martin de Ronde, Guerrilla\'s Commercial Director speculates that the hype may have something to do with the lack of dedicated shooters on PS2: "You\'ve got your PlayStation 2 and you want to play one of the best rally games in the world, you can do it. If you want to play one of the best Formula One games in the world, you can do it. Platform games? No problem. PlayStation 2 is still quite low on first person shooters, in terms of individual, carefully crafted FPSs specifically for the format. That has got people extremely excited, and speculation, forum discussions, forum opposition from other formats\' fanboys has done the rest, I think."

But for now, the burning question is: does the game measure up? Having just taken a trip to Amsterdam to size up a recent build of the game, we\'re pleased to report that the answer is a massive, wholehearted, unreserved \'yes\'. Killzone is... well, here\'s the thing. We\'ve been sworn to secrecy for now regarding specifics on Guerrilla\'s killer app. What we can tell you is that Killzone is easily one of the most exciting games currently in development for PS2. It\'s shot straight to the top of our \'Most wanted\' list for 2004, unthinkably toppling the mighty GT4 from the number one slot in the process. Over the coming months, we\'ll be backing up that rather hefty claim with a huge payload of Killzone-related content. Keep it right here for interviews with the team, first impressions and much, much more. In the meantime, contrary to the generally sound advice offered by Public Enemy in 1988, do believe the hype. Killzone really is all that and more.

Yeah thats what im waiting for.

I am excited about killzone but im not going to ruin it formyself. Personally im more hyped for GT4. Probably because ive seen videos etc. and know that it cant be worse than gt3, thus im sure that i will like it. Meh.

Too much time between now and then.

The motion blur reminds me of MGS. It looks like they are only found in cutscenes, though.

So anyone heard anything about when a video will be out. Last thing I heard were that the makers of Jin Roh had threatened to sue Guerilla games for copyright infringement. Apparently (and I also think they\'ve got a pretty good case having seen Jin Roh a short while ago) the Helghast are almost identical to the commandos (don\'t remember their name, was it Panzer Division?) in Jin Roh. So there won\'t be any movies of Killzone until they settle their differences.

Jin Roh is a very good anime. Too bad I saw it AFTER Mononoke Hime ; Jin Roh\'s animation seemed a bit stiff compared to Mononoke\'s.

Next the Whermacht will sue Guerrilla and Jin Roh both for using their helmets.
