Title: Paradoxes to think of.
Post by: Bossieman on October 25, 2003, 08:02:06 AM
A child that is 6 years old is young, right? A child that is 6 weeks and 1 second is also young. So that means that a child that is 6 weeks and 2 seconds is also young(one second doesnt make the difference). Continiue this and you come to the conclusion that everyone is young, no matter what age.
Interesting indeed.

Any ideas to solve this one?

Well that is because "Young" and "old" are just words, words that define too things that don\'t actually exist scientificly... except i\'d say when yer cells stop dividing and you start dying.. then you are old..

Well I can change the paradox to something that is physical. Lets say you have stack of 10000 of stones. Now you take one of them away, the other 9999 are still a stack, right?

it\'s like that story with the rabbit and the turtle....
in a sprint, no matter how small the headstart the turtle has....if it\'s there he\'ll win

I\'m not going to waste a good ponder on such a vague theory.

I do, but umm...

No matter how many stones there are it\'d still be a stack, because a stack, is just a word... not an ammount...

Dude,. you don\'t get it.

If you are six years old, and your brother is six months old - you are still young.

Get it?
You are six years old but you are considered young .

Oh and if you remove a stone from a stack - it\'s still a stack, but with one less.
Oh, how amazingly deep.

This is actually a real paradox. It is well known and has not yet been solved.

Its one of those things that is useless to solve.

I don\'t see how its a paradox if you change the words.

About the stones one... that is not even a paradox.. of course it\'ll still be a stack, unless a stack is "A pile of 10,000 items"

Which one is a real paradox?

The first one is arbitrary. 15 years old is young compared to 25 but old compared to 5. So its not really a paradox.

The second one is also not a paradox. A "stack" is not a unit of measurement so its not a contradiction to say that 10, 20, or 10,000 rocks is a stack.

A real paradox would be saying that the curvature of an infinite circle is a straight line.

Even if 6 weeks + 1 sec is young, and so is +2 secs - at some point this \'young\' person would have reached 90 years. I\'m sure we can agree 90 years is not young for a person.

EDIT: Lol sorry, didn\'t see it was closed.
