I doubt the PSP will look like this, the buttons need to be raised somewhat I think to feel comfortable.
Also I think the power button is a little misplaced but the overall design is quite nice though.

I think it looks ****ing awesome.
Except that gay keychain thing on it.
What does the p at the end of PS stand for? Personal?
-
Portable
-
So is it a PSone or PS2? Or neither?
-
Looks like a makeup kit.
-
Shape looks really boring. SONY are obviously going to keep the angular logo type for all their Playstation branded products.
Does this have phone capabilities? is it a PS1 or is it more powerful then that?
-
I love it:eek:
Damn...now I want to know more about it.
-
Wow. Im more impressed than i thought i would be. I didnt have too much faith in an original design. It looks great but if the buttons are touch sensitive then im afraid the functionality or control wont be that great at all. Hopefully its just this way for the conceptual models.
-
That doesn\'t look like it plays current PS1 disks.. like u need a minidisk recorder or something. Wierd site, not sony. Hoax?
-
Damn people have you read anything at all about PSP?
No it\'s not a PS1, it\'s a lot more powerful. The new disc format is called UMD (Universal Media Disc) or something and is a new format developed by Sony which can hold up to 1.8 GB worth of data in two layers.
No, it\'s a gaming handheld and doesn\'t have phone capabilities although it will wireless connection for multiplayer etc.
Specs:
UMD - Universal Media Disc
60mm
Laser Diode: 660nm
Dual Layer : 1.8GB
Transfer Rate: 11Mbps
Shock Proof
Secure ROM by AES
Unique Disc ID
The UMD was shown in more or less this same detail at E3. It will also include advanced copyright protection schemes, a parental lock feature -- which indicates that games and movie discs will be coded with content ratings -- and, disappointing eager importers, a region lockout.

Fatal, just because a .pdf file is not on Sony\'s site doesn\'t make it a hoax. It\'s one of Kutaragi\'s many presentations of late and bear in mind that it is just a CONCEPT model and nothing more. It will most definitely not look like the picture you\'re seeing in the first post.
-
33 million polygons textured and lighted??WOW!!!
-
I like the concept. :)
-
Me Rike me much.
lets hope they let you play the old PSX games...
Final Fantasy 7 on the move anyone ? ;)
-
It also seems to have a widescreen!
-
Yes, Sony has confirmed it will have a widescreen display
-
It might also be a telephone.

Just a concept but they say it look similar to this.
Looks good IMO
-
Hmm yeah, this might be good... IN THE THREAD ALREADY MADE ABOUT THE SAME DAMN THING! :p
*merging*
-
You thread marauding Viking! There\'s another thread like this. :p
-
I poured my heart and sould into that thread and it was perverted by some gene splicing into another thread.
I feel violated

I like the looks but I hope it\'s not a phone.
-
Ok, ok, who knows. I was pretty paranoid about stuff when I wrote that :p
So, they it won\'t play ps1 games at all? Will you have to re-purchase them, or buy a mini disk recorder?

Hello? AAAH! MY HAIR! IT\'S CAUGHT IN THE FAN!!!

So this thing is more powerful graphically then a Dreamcast?

In between PSX and DC.. :)
Gotta love Sony, pushing forward and not holding back (Nintendo) :D ;) :p
-
I don\'t think I could play Gran Turismo PSP after the graphical beauty that is GT4.
-
Well, until you can figure out a way to bring your PS2 with you for the train ride to work, I guess you\'ll have to settle for PSP\'s shit-a-licious graphics.
Curses to convenience.
-
Have any games been shown for it yet?
-
Not that I know of.
-
OMFG, that thing is WAY more powerful than GBA and N-gage
-
It will also have about a quarter of the battery life.. ;)
-
They should make an armpit adapter for energy, just lift your arm up, and pop that sucker in.
Hell, I warm up my burritos under my ball sack.
-
I cant believe that its going to be as powerful as a DC. I mean could you imagine components more powerful than a DC in the palm of your hand? Crazy. I hope this is well supported because it looks great and would blow everything else completely out of the water. That and i hope that it doesnt cost an arm and a leg. Wonderful 2D games with the sprite glory of ps2 and 3d games damn good for a portable.
Im not so sure of all this in the end but ill keep my fingers crossed.
-
I don\'t like the flush buttons and also, they\'re too close.
-
What about the price? This thing is going to be more expensive than any other handheld system released so far
-
$60?
-

It\'s only a plan....nothing confirmed.
Inspect a gadget...
Sony has outlined plans for a much-anticipated, all-in-one handheld gaming device that includes a digital music and video player and could even act as mobile telephone.
Officials of the world\'s largest consumer electronics maker also said Sony will launch a rival to Apple Computer\'s iPod digital music player next year for as little as $60. Sony described a prototype for its PSP gaming device - due out before the end of 2004 - during a presentation to US investors that reiterated plans to restore profitability at the company.
Ken Kutaragi, Sony\'s executive deputy president and head of its gaming business, said "PSP will be the Walkman of the future."
PSP is designed to rival Nintendo\'s Game Boy handheld game player, mobile phone maker Nokia\'s N-Gage wireless gaming device, and Apple\'s iPod and iTunes music download service.
Sony plans to eventually add telecommunication features, Kutaragi told a news conference afterward, lending credence to speculation PSP devices would also serve as mobile phones.
Sony currently envisions a device that looks somewhat similar to Nokia\'s recently introduced N-Gage gaming phone, but with a bigger display that makes it looks more like a handheld television.
The "concept model" showed off by Kutaragi was a one-piece device designed to be grasped in two hands, with a bright, colour screen roughly 4.5 inches in diameter, he said.
"PSP will not be one kind of product," Kutaragi said. Rather, it is a platform of related devices with the capacity to add or subtract features, he said, while stressing that final design details are not expected to be revealed until a later date.
While crediting Apple and its chief executive, Steve Jobs, for the success of the iPod, Sony officials said the PSP would allow consumers to watch music videos as well as listen to digital tunes.
"We are taking on iPod with our new device," another Sony official said. "We are coming at him [Steve Jobs] on that front."

HA! Aren\'t you glad you\'re wrong this time? $60 is their target. It might be a tad higher....but it\'s a lot less than N-Gage. Jeez....they paid $300! iPod is also $300! It\'s like PSX, NGage and iPod all in one.....for $60!
-
Terrible design. Looks extremely uncomfortable.

Raise the buttons and not flush (e.g. make them exactly like the PS2 Dual Shock controller) keep the screen with a tilt up....and it\'s poyfek!
When can I be mod? :p

How can it be like an iPod when it doesn\'t have at least a 20gb hdd? It can\'t store as much as an iPod by a long shot so I really don\'t see it as competing with the iPod...

But how will you hold it? The buttons are in the middle of the machine, so you\'ll be using your fingertips to support it. Not your palm..
:stick:

Your joking right? Forums would go down the crapper if THAT ever happened.
Does this thing play mp3s? Also, what kind of batteries would it use? They should use rechargable phone batteries.

Similar to the GB:SP. You\'ll cradle it as if yer pointing your hands like pistols, only the index fingers will curl over the shoulder buttons and yer middle fingers will be curled below it, supporting it.
-
Looks like a digital camera...
I still think portable gaming is for children... I never seem to be interested in playing videogames when I\'m on the go... I mean, unless I\'m constantly flying around the world on long flights, or on the move I really have no purpose for portable gaming.

actually, in many aspects, it could be quite above the PS2 performance wise...

any word on pricing yet, and battery life?
Vapor, when you hit College you\'ll appreciate these more. I have an hour between classes to burn, so this will come in handy... then again I have a laptop and never play game on that, but then again it\'s a work PC and sucks for gaming (1ghz & 512mb RAM, but only an intergrated 16mb video card, thank you very much Toshiba!)

For one, the PSP has a smaller resolution than all consoles out at the moment. This means that the buffers in turn will be smaller and that less pixels need to be \'drawn\' to fill an entire screen. In other words, considering what resolution the PSP has to cover, the fillrate is mighty impressive.
The geometry might be less than what the PS2 is theoretically capabale of, yet we need to remember what the effective rate is in in-game scenarios. PS2 games are close to 20 million polygons/sec today. PSP *may* be able to improve on this thanks to being better optimized. Even if geometry falls to below PS2 games (which it likely will), the GPU (MediaEngine) should do a better job thanks to added pixel effects which the Graphics Synthesizer lacks. Technically, the PSP might be below the PS2, but it should do a better job given the resolution its rendering at and including the modifications to the MediaEngine in features. I\'m sure AntiAliasing will be supported in hardware aswell, giving it yet another advantage.
Definately a step up to Dreamcast and in many aspects above PS2 I expect it to be. Only time will show for sure though, but as of yet, the hardware for a portable is very promising.
-
Yeah, well I hope they put a cd drive in there that\'s worth a crap instead of the rebfurbished trash they use in the PS2s. I don\'t have a high opinion of Sony hardware.
-
im getting goose bumps.
-
I guess supposed to be having graphics just as good as the PS2.Play movies on them umd\'s.prob connect to the ps2,psx,and or ps3.The possibilities r endless.
