The day I heard Iron Maiden, one of my favorite bands of all time, was going to release a new CD I was screaming estatically.
Well, It came out quite some time ago, and due to a limited cash flow I hadnt purchased it. Last night instead of getting school supplies I got it.
Cover Art : When I looked at in the store- the cover art just blows. Its all CG, well most of it, and it is done very poorly. I know someone at this forum couldve done something better. I wish they were to have kept the same Eddie feel, but of course times are changing.

Songs : It has a total of 11 tracks I belive, each one averaging about 5 minutes. They definetly keep the old Iron Maiden story telling singing, and upbeat drumming and guitaring as usual, but its all very different some how. Im not sure if its new guitars or something, but the sound of it is different. Its not a bad different, or a good different- its just different.
Favorite tracks : Rainmaker - Very cool guitar effects, and crisp vocalization
Dance of Death - Very slow and quiet, but I love how he is telling a story.
No More Lies - Heavy, very fast, and chunky :D.
Overall, if your an Iron Maiden fan, or new Maiden fan I suggest you pick it up if you have the spare cash. It isnt their best work, or their worst. It is a very versitale new step in hopefully a resurgance of Iron Maiden.
PS; The guitar solos in this are very good also.
Score: 8/10
(BTW: I am trying to make a come back to more reviews at the forum, it is fun seeing other peoples thoughts etc on purchases/movies, hence the lay out of my post, very formal)

Good write up, but I hate Iron Maiden. :p
-
Spudz: I find it interesting that Iron Maiden recorded all their best albums before you were born. Yes, "Somewhere in Time" was the last studio album that was in any way worthwhile. Your statement "its all very different some how" reinforces my suspicion about any new album they might release. I\'m not willing to take the chance.
Piece of Mind and Powerslave are the two best albums. Iron Maiden started their decline in 1986; it\'s too late to reverse it unfortunately. :(
-
True, they have had bad points.
But honestly, how can they make a comeback if they dont have loyal fans. I know they wrote most of their stuff before I was born, but that doesnt stop me from enjoying it.
Dont get this album mistaken for a new St. Anger. St. Anger was the biggest let down since, well, their hasnt been a bigger let down in the music industry.
Coredweller, at least view sample songs off of Amazon.com, I do it all the time- and well, their is another way ;).
Really though, this album is worth picking up, at least in my perspective, maybe Im just so excited Iron Maiden is trying to come back- but I dunno, I love it.
Ive listented to it nonstop for the past 24 hours. I havent gotten tired of it yet.
-
so he likes a band that was big before he was born, I\'m a huge Sinatra fan and am only 21.
-
Bruce Dickinson is an amazing singer. He is also an expert fencer too (not garden fences, the sport with masks and swords).:D
-
If you like Maiden check out a band called "The Lord Weird Slough Feg" if you can find \'em anywhere.
-
Never heard of em, but I\'ll keep it in mind.
If Spudz or any other young listeners like Iron Maiden, they should listen to Wishbone Ash. Ash pioneered that dual-guitar-playing-in-thirds style that Iron Maiden built their careers around. Also Steve Harris often says that Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash was his favorite bass player. I recommend the album "There\'s the Rub."
-
You can\'t look at these guys and tell me they don\'t rock your socks!

^
:D, yes I can see the resemblence in their looks, so music wise they must be just as kickass.
Ill check out both of those bands.
BTW: Any else pick it up?
Honestly, it is a pretty good CD, they havent changed a whole lot over the 20 or so years they have been around.

To me the best is live after death, all brilliant songs and Maiden IMHO are the only band that sound better live.

Actually that\'s not a very good live album in my opinion. Iron Maiden was a band that always gave good live performances, but mostly it was because they had good stage presence and showmanship. The music itself often suffered in a live show, and that\'s the problem with listening to an album like "Live After Death."
My memories of that album are of the tinnyness of the recording, how many songs they played at a different tempo from the studio recordings. It was very frustrating. Of course I bought it when it first came out, so I only have the vinyl version. I don\'t even have a functioning turntable anymore, so I haven\'t listened to it in years.
Best live rock record ever: "Strangers in the Night" by UFO
2nd best: "Alive" by Kiss.

Cored, have you checked it out?
I know the coverart is a turnoff but its well worth it. Its been playing non stop on my home theatre, lol.
Ive probably listented to it 50x by now. I havent gotten tired of it.
BTW: Couldnt find Wishbone Ash, or The Lord Weird Slough Feg.
Ill check Amazon.
Bob; could you recommend TLWSF\'s best album?
-
Heard of, amazingly enough. But never heard TLWSF.
I\'m sure Luke would probably have a preference, though. :p
-
I\'m ... er uh... "getting" it now. :)
-
Shit, I can\'t think of the name of the Slough Feg album I like... I\'ll get back to you on it.

I\'m ... er uh... "getting" it now.
I did the "same", I always do. Then if it is good enough I purchase it.
Tell me what you think when your "done". ;)
-
Luke:
I just found online a song by TLWSF, Its called Highlander.
I downloaded it, immediately I was reminded of Korn by the bagpipes.
Then the guitaring came in- and I was in heaven.
Thanks for this, too bad I cant acquire any of their albums. :(
By any chance do you own them? *ahem*trans*ahem* *cough*fer files*cough*over*cough*msn*cough*
Bleh, must have a cold.

Well not that I\'m trying to dis your opinion but could it be partially due to the record player?? As I have Seventh son,Powerslave and Piece of mind all on CD but I still think my Live After Death CD is the best??
-
You may have a point about that old turntable I used to own. But then I also listened to many other albums on it as well, including the two I mentioned above. :)
BTW, you\'re saying the tempo changes on Live After Death didn\'t bother you at all? Maybe it depends on which tempo you heard first...
-
Spudz... I seriously have no idea where you could get some Slough Feg without just ordering some CD\'s from the website they have. But even then the site to not be working right now.
Good luck, I got my 2 Slough Feg cd\'s from a friend.
Slough Feg rules.

saw Maiden in Copenhagen last wednesday. Half of the gig they played songs from the new album. That was a bad idea. The whole crowd were bored including me. :/
They played at Roskilde earlier this summer and then they only played old and really old stuff which was a great concert:)
-
No you all are wrong... Killers and Number of the Beast were their best albums ;)
-
I knew someone was going to say that. Someone always says that. :) LOL

Maybe they couldn\'t get the live stuff sounding good on record player is what I meant to say.But about tempo changes,I think revelations sound heaps better faster.
