A perfect example for me would be Grand Theft Auto 3. I remember seeing the box cover and thinking it looked too cartoonish, or "for kids" because I thought the cartoony style of the cover art represented the look and feel of the game itself. Needless to say, it was WAY cooler than most people thought it was going to be. Other examples would be;
Animal Crossing - http://www.animal-crossing.com/ - suprisingly addictive, even if you\'re normally into war games n such
Munch’s Oddysee - http://www.oddworld.com/ow_frameset.html - great game, no matter what age or what type of gamer you are. Probably my favorite platformer ever.
I-Ninja - http://www.ininjagame.com/ - not out yet, but it looks pretty cool. C’mon now, who can beat fingertip push-ups!

Animal Crossing and Wind Waker...
I\'ve owned Animal Crossing for about a year now and I still check in every now and then. I almost have my entire museum complete...that will be a glorius day, oh yes it shall.
Wind Waker, I cringed when I saw the new look but I knew I was going to have to play it anyway. I ended up enjoying the game quite a bit and I\'m hooked on the art style.
It just comes down to style and I\'m open for just about anything now.

I\'ve never blacklisted a game for being kiddy. Of course, you don\'t have to dislike kiddy games to think a game is going to be kiddy and it ends up being the opposite. Honestly, I haven\'t had many experiences like that.
One thing\'s for sure.. I never thought that new Metroid and Prince of Persia games (Sands of Time, not POP3D) could be so damned good. :) Retro seemed to be having major internal problems, and POP3D sucked.

for me it\'d have to be kingdom hearts..i never gave it a second look when it was announced. But not too long ago i rented it and wow! excellent game. Yes it may have kiddy overtones but that last boss at the very end when you couln\'t save between battles? heh one of the most difficult boss battles eva! for me anyway! i purchased it soon after.
-
You beat the game and then bought it?
Anywayz...Kingdom Hearts was another game I didn\'t pay much attention to because of the whole disney theme and the hack and slash fighting. I ended up buying it after Bobs_Hardware talked me into reading a bit more about it.
I\'m seriously stoked for the sequels coming in 2004.

heh..actually i rented it ...couldn\'t finish it within the rental time,..then purchased it. I\'am waiting for the sequel as well.
-
I hated it! the random battles were just to annoying for me!...

Serious Sam - I pondered over whether to buy it for ages before taking the plunge and found it to be a great laugh.
Also, Mario Golf on the N64, there\'s a lovely golf game playability-wise hidden under the primary colours and tinkly tunes.

Anyone else here planning to get I-Ninja when it comes out? It looks like a fun game.

I\'m wrapping up Paper Mario right now for the first time. That turned out to be a really fun game, if not too easy.
Mario Tennis 64 was a winner despite the graphics, too. And I can\'t forget Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon.
What a bizarre sense of humor in that game.

That\'s such a classic pic.

Pikimin is one of the greatest games, bar none.

Yep. I also like how it\'s got dictatorship or cultist undertones. :p

You are the shit, my friend. Mystical Ninja was a great game.

I hated that game with a passion. Made me want to puke
