EXCLUSIVE: XBOX 2 SET FOR SHOCK GDC UNVEILING!
Console war gearing up for Easter 2004 explosion, with Microsoft set to land first blow
15:50 Microsoft is secretly planning to make the first demonstration of next-generation Xbox hardware at next year\'s GDC, according to industry sources operating at the highest levels. The Game Developers Conference takes place in California from March 22-26 of next year, and if the unveiling goes ahead, it will replicate almost exactly the way Microsoft revealed Xbox itself at the show in 2000.
With Sony looking increasingly likely to start making waves with PS3 at E3 next May, it\'s believed Microsoft, having repeatedly asserted it will be first to the market in the next generation, wants to set its stall out early and, most crucially, first.
One senior source, operating under strict conditions of anonymity, told us: "The plan is to talk specs and show early tech demos [of Xbox 2] at a US event next Easter. This will provide a platform leading towards something more substantial at E3." The proposed showing at GDC is expecting to match that of the 2000 event, and will be behind closed doors on an invitation only basis at Microsoft\'s stand.
In terms of timing, this makes perfect sense: the current widespread belief amongst industry watchers is that PS3 is likely to release in Japan around Christmas 2005, with the sequel to Xbox coming in preceding months, with September/October the current whisper. With this in mind, Microsoft will need to be able to go to investors and related parties with hard evidence soon.
Further credence is added by a recent report by analysts US Bancorp Piper Jaffray, published yesterday, claiming sales of the current generation of console hardware have peaked, forecasting slowing sales for the remainder of this generation; if Microsoft and its competitors are to continue to build upon the installed userbase, the revelation and promise of new hardware is essential.
We contacted Microsoft for clarification, but a spokesperson would only issue the stock response: "This is a rumour and we do not comment on rumours." However, one highly placed insider, while refusing to be drawn on the potential GDC showing, did concede: "We do have quite a lot to talk about now..."

If true....i have to say ... WHY ?
i mean....
- ONLY 10 millions sales world wide of the X Box.
- X box unable to brake way from the NGC
- Doing Piss poor in Japan and east Asia
- PS2 sales top 60 million & sonys console out sells Microsoft since the launch of the X box
Should they put more effort into the FIRST X Box ?
-
The way I see it, if people aren\'t buying XBOX 1, then why would they buy XBOX 2?
If consumers don\'t have confidence in the product your selling, then why continue with the brand?
-
I wonder if Sony are going to respond to this by speeding up development of the PS3.
-
It\'s just a demonstration...Its not like it\'s coming out in 2004 at all probably.
Stfu.
-
m$ = pathetic
-
It\'ll probably take a year from the first showing to its released. Just like it did with the first xbox.
-
The point is that XBox is still a baby, and its successor is already ready to be shown to the industry, which makes me think that final hardware/specs are established.
Wouldn\'t it be funny if PS3 was more powerful.
-
MS is in a crunch, they have to keep up with Sony if they hope to break in to the market any further.
2004 is not that early to be talking about next generation consoles...a full year or so before the actual product, not out of the norm.
Waits for N5 news...
-
 That was priceless, Jumpman
I believe they already announced it is backwards compatible...perhaps unofficial but then again it\'s better than "I can\'t see MS doing anything intelligent by making is backwards compatible so it\'ll die once #2 is out." so we\'ll just have to wait and see.
The worst thing MS could do is to wait AFTER PS3 is launched. MS and Nintendo are watching Sony very closely and they will adjust their schedules accordingly.
-
Anywayz, I wonder how much money M$ will lose on this console too.
-
Didn\'t they say they were prepared to lose 2 billion before calling it quits?
The hardware is adequate and the interest is there...all they need is some games! All it takes is 5-10 stellar titles a year with some mediocre titles for filler (works for Sony)...then again maybe not.

If M$ does release XB2 in spring, they are gonna have a lot of developing problems, like 2 games out for it which will be of poor quality and like the SEGA saturn, will be impossible to develop for. Spring is just too soon. I hope they choke on it.
-
Titan, they will only be releasing information this coming Spring. The console isn\'t due until 2005.

Ease of development is MS strength. It\'s a Windows based PC remember?? :D

Whew...
It sure felt good to dust off that ol\' "Delete" button...
Behave or I\'m gonna tell mm to flood this board with 20 pages of why pop culture sucks and suckers pay for online gaming...
You have been warned...
-
and i\'ll do it too
/me waves fist in air
:rpissed:

I\'ll wait for PS3. Like the rest of the world. In fact...I\'m gonna camp out in line NOW for the PS3. Well....not exactly now. ;)
-
i dont see how anyone began to consider that rumor true in the first place. Sad. Releasing it this soon with titles still hitting XB in abundance would be rediculous. Its way too soon. Basically a Dreamcast scenario but just not as good.
BTW: I wonder how the first tech demos of the nex gen consoles will look like.

Who is this Ashford guy?

Well I thought they were going for multiple IBM processors this time around for XB2 so developing for it will be a lot more like what it\'s like on the PS2.
