Title: Sequels that surpass the original...
Post by: Living-In-Clip on November 29, 2003, 04:45:09 AM
In celebration of my finding the new \'Alien Quadriligiy\' 9-disc DVD box set a week \'n\' half early, I\'m posting this thread.
Name a sequel that in your opinon surpasses the original...

Mine ...

Aliens

The original Alien was a great film, but extremely slow. Cameron took the sequel, kept everything the original had , and then bumped it up a couple notches.

X2: X-Men United

I hate the original X-Men. Too much character development. Lame effects, terrible plot and the list goes on and on. The sequel has character development, nott o much, better effects and all around just a better movie. Since the time X-Men came out, I\'ve watched it a total of three times. Once in the cinema, twice on DVD. I\'ve already watched X2 around four or five times.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

The darkest of the series and the only one worth watching in my opinion.

The Bride of Frankenstein

A classic Universal Horror film, that sets the bars for sequels.

Oh and the movie  series box set to end all movie series box sets...

Movie sequels only, or books and games too?

IMO, Aliens > Alien. T2 > T1. Empire > A New Hope, but IMO both are near-equal. I don\'t see how you can say that ANH and ROTJ aren\'t worth watching.. considering how damned good ANH was.

X2 was slightly better than X-Men, I will agree on that. I also think that LOTR:TTT was better than FOTR, for the same reason. (less character development) Once TTT came around, we were already familiar with the cast so it easier to just send them on their quest unhindered. FOTR is almost equally good, though. Nice balance.

Terminator 2 of course
Not really a sequel per se but Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan was way better than the Motion Picture.

I\'ve seen Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Ressurection (all masterpieces) but never Alien. I have a couple Blockbuster gift cards. I could go pick it up when I have time. I doubt I\'ll get into theaters anytime soon to see the directors cut (BTW, is the Alien Directors Cut in the Quadrilogy set?). Now that I know about this set, its on the top of my list of things to get.....when I get a job :(

Hmmm.. this is a toughy.

Xmen1/2 - For sure. I thought the first was really good when it first came out. I bought it, then I saw the second one. I was pretty blown away.

Godfather 1/2- I wouldnt have listed this unless someone else mentioned it. Good thing too.

Terminator 1/2- The first just blowed. The second is one of my favorite movies ever.

Other than that, their is nothing that I can really think of. Bleh...

I would say that Wrath of Khan and First Contact are better than the first Trek movie.. but are they sequels? Kinda.

I didn\'t know about this box set and am glad I didn\'t pick up the Alien Legacy...

This is why we love L-I-C...always keeps us up to date on movies...

I didn\'t even know The Ring was originally a Japanese movie until Clip mentioned it...

Other superior sequels...

Die Hard 2 & 3

Freddy vs Jason

American Pie 2 & Wedding

The movie which Black Samurai quotes from...Short Circuit 2

Also, the Police Academy movies...

:p

Road Warrior was much better than Mad Max... though I liked both better than Beyond Thunderdome.

I just don\'t understand how someone could of never seen any of the Alien movie\'s, it\'s almost blashphemous.

I don\'t think you can consider \'Freddy Vs Jason\' a sequel either. If so, you\'d be saying it was better than either of the series previous installments and I\'d have to disagree, as Nightmare on Elm Street 3 was good, New Nightmare was great and Friday the 13th Part V was excellent.

One no one mentioned: Toy Story 2.

Yes, Elm St 3 was good but Vs was better...

And of course its a sequel since it takes place after the previous installments, story-wise, except Jason X...
