I\'ve been using my pc or Psx2 for a dvd player for too long.
So i\'m thinking about getting a dvd player. One that supports DIVX etc.
This is my choice so far.
It\'s a Liteon Lvd-2002 model

Anyone know any other good dvd players that support Divx etc?
-
Welcome to the 21st century. Quit using your PS2.
Question - are you also wanting region free support? That is really a huge factor in what DVD player you buy.
-
Why do you need DIVX? The format is dead.
-
Divx is hardly dead man. I personally use it all the time.
I don\'t care about region free dvd players. I don\'t import movies. :)
-
If you need Divx the Lite-On and the Bravo D1 (http://www.vinc.us/product.asp?ID=31&PID=21&SEQ=1) are pretty much your only choices for quality players. Both scale to 1080i but the Bravo has a sharper picture and available DVI output provided you have a display that supports it.
*However* the LiteOn seems to be less finnicky about loading DVDs since it has newer firmware, even though they are based on the same chipsets. Go for it!

supports Xvid and Divx. Although i\'m unsure if i can get it here.
-
All these players support Divx and Xvid. They are both a derivative of mpeg-4.
-
as far as i know, dvd players need firmware updates to support new / updated codecs.
Also read XviD and Hardware Player Interoperability

Meh... the PS2 works just fine. And the 21st century can suck it.
-
the liteon looks funky.
personally i\'m quite content with my PS2 playing my dvd\'s heck i can even play mp3, divx and xvid files on it too :).
-
(1) I still don\'t see a need for Divx, other than if you are stealing movies - which you shouldn\'t be doin\'. :D
(2) For the longest time, I used my PS2 for playing DVD\'s and I now realize how big of a dork I looked like. Come on you bums, quit using your PS2 and get a dedicated DVD player, one that actually gives you options.
(3) Finally, I think you are asking at the wrong Messageboard. Go over to DVDtalk.com or many other DVD / home system boards. They\'ll give you a lot more options and better replies on what is good and what isn\'t.
(4) Fourth and finally, are you sure you will never want to import any movies? I say this, because I know when I first started buying movies , I had no intenions and then I realized the many advantages of being region free. If you have even the slighest interest in it, I suggest you go ahead and get a region free player or at least one that can be easily hacked for region free, that is unless you want to look like a total dork like Capcom and I, as we have two DVD players at this point. Niether one of us had the hindsight to buy a region free player from the get go, so we was forced to eventually just go buy a seperate one (Cyberhome) just for region free and PAL support.

Heh, well until a week ago I was using my ps2 for playing DVD\'s.
Here is what I got;
Toshiba SD-5109 Twin-Tray 2-Disc DVD Player
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.amazon.com%2Fimages%2FP%2FB00000J3OM.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg&hash=b77c5850f383c1ba58011312a9ec46adc9af0e22)
I know shit about DVD stuff, so I just bought this cause it was recommended by the guy at the store.
-
Rule one of any electronic buying, never trust the salesmen! :D
Still, I don\'t know anything about that player, so it may indeed be good. Either way, it\'s just a good thing that you upgraded from the shoddy PS2 playback.
-
Well it was either trusting him or me.
LIC who would you go with?

Ask here first next time Spudz. :) Nowadays $700 for that player is a ripoff.
Divx has many uses. I use it to archive TV shows and other excerpts. Don\'t think I\'ll ever buy another DVD player though.. I finally got my HTPC working great.
-
Spudz, it wasn\'t worth it.. No Divx, svcd, vcd support. You got ripped off good.
Even though it says it supports VCD, i don\'t see how when it can\'t read CDR. CDRW etc.
-
lol, those aren\'t what make a DVD player good! To me a $700 player says DVD-A, SACD, kick ass brushed aluminum body, DCDi Faroudja de-interlacer, and some other cool crap.
The sub-$200 players are the ones that come with things like svcd, divx. People who can afford to grab an expensive player don\'t wanna fool with VCDs and divx\'s.
-
Interesting.. So you pay huge amounts of dollers, for a dvd player. That only plays dvds...
-
Rich people don\'t need divx on DVD. They need something that\'s name brand, great quality, and will last over several years. I bet the Toshiba\'s chipset decodes mpeg-2 better and it\'ll take longer for it to crap out. But don\'t worry, I don\'t think it\'s worth $700 either. ;)
-
Hmm..
Well the only thing I really wanted it to do;
Play DVDs.
-
but for 700 bucks.. and i\'m guessin your talking USD. Which means its worth around 1700 bucks. That\'s a HUGE rip off.
That\'s like buying a DELL computer.. Brand names, pffffft.
Why pay so much for a "better" chipset, that will last longer when it will become outdated in a few years anyway.
-
DVD player to buy...hmmm...how about one that does this:
SACD
DVD-A
DVD-V
these three above are consider universal dvd player.
Other codecs: WM9, MP3, VCD, SVCD.
progressive scan- Faroudja DCDi. No chroma bug, flagship 3-2 pulldown, 2-2 pulldown. 540 lines of resolution, no ringing....blah and blah.
Firewire digital connection for DVD-A and SACD digital transfer to receiver with 5.1 MLP and DSD decoder.
this is consider a universal dvd player. thx is a rather knowledgeable about this.
Anyway, being a cheap person i am, i want this player at $250.
-
If you care about picture quality, then I don\'t suggest the el cheapo models, even if they have every feature in the book. I\'d rather trade features for picture quality than vice versa. Besides, I don\'t need divx support etc. because I watch DVD\'s, not rips.
-
Soully, rich people also would have a home pc hooked up to their monitors as well. SO there would be no reason to burn a movie to disc and play with the player. Just run it straight off the hard drive.
I personally don\'t care about divx support. My main concern is DVI output.
and Spudz, you could have bought a Bravo D1 for 200 bucks. Bad ass player that does a hell of a lot more. Only thing is you\'d have to get up to change discs half way through lord of the rings.
-
I have my system hooked up to my TV, Reciever etc so i can watch Divx movies from my pc on my normal tv. But theres to much screwing around. I prefer not to screw around.
-
I\'m still using a Panasonic DVD-A360 from about five years back, to replace it with a model containing all the features I want would cost about $1000 so I just hope the old faithful keeps going.
Still beats seven shades of crap out of most opposition, I had 10 DVD player\'s from around our house including PS2, xBox and Toshiba gear all running through my setup and the Panasonic destroyed all of them (and they\'re all at least 2 years newer). The picture and sound were better than the el-cheapo players, PS2 and xBox and the sound was far in excess of anything the high end Tosh could do, creating a lovely ambience without blowing my tweeters up or popping my windows out of the frames!
I\'d buy Panasonic DVD players before anything else.
-
I\'ve got...
Pioneer 5-disc
CyberHome 402s
Apex (given to parents ).
-
Paul that sounds kickass. Is it the universal Pio? Only 200!?
-
Actually I am Paul2, there another member in this forum that is Paul and that\'s not me.
The list about the universal I make was my dream dvd player. I don\'t think there are a player of my expectation, at least not in $250 price range.
The Universal Pioneer cost $250, but the progressive scan playback is still questionable, i found the old discontinued panasonic rp-82 rules in dvd video playback. Pioneer $250 does play DVD-A and SACD, but the analog output DACs quality not going to compare to one costing more. And it doesn\'t have firewire output for receiver.
I think DVI is a good option, but i could care less. As long as the dvd player give great DVD video performance, DVI isn\'t important. I think it would be a while before we get more competition in universal dvd players.

You mean I would have to actually move?
! !
Maybe I didnt list all the features it has- because what makes it so great for 700 bucks? He guaranteed us. That little ****ing dickhead.
Can someone else find a complete list of features?
